Money was in good request, and borrowers paid in the morning up to pt-r cent, for call loans, but later in the day advances were scarcely better than Business in the discount Market wa* re- stricted through scarcity of money, and the rates were iivin at :¡ f, -r three months tntb. The only company of a specu- lative character which haa been I brought out since the passing; of the BiU bas had nearly the wlwJn of its I shares applied for, on the strength of a few commendatory paragraphs in the London papers, and before a solitary advertisement has appeared or even the prospectuses have been sent out. The promise held out by the directors of the Bound Hill Water Race and Alluvial Gold Mining Company (Limited) that, on a capital of £ 70,000, a sullicient revenue can be earned to pay a divi- dend of at least 40 per cent.,might reasonably, under other circumstances, have been con- sidered too good to be true. The vendors, however, who, by the way, take the whole of the purchase money in shares, are sup- ported by some of the highest authorities in Australia in estimating the annual income at i'57_ .000, which is sullicient to pay a dividend of something lilie 80 per cent. To be on the safe side, the directors have based their estimate on a reduced income of C27,000. It is only fair to point out that, apart from its speculative j character, this company acquires the right to supply the miners for luiles round with water, and the water rates alone, altogether irrespective of the question of gold finding, are calculated to bring in a sullicient revenue to pay a dividend of 12or 14 per cent. The London board of directors is a powerful one, and on the local committee are such men as SirKobert- Stout, K.C.M.G., late Premier of New Zealand, and the Hon. W. J. M. Larnach, C.M.G., M.H.K., late Minister for, l,ar i)ae b .Mines. The oiffces of the company are 85, Gracechurch-street, E.C.
LOCAL FINANCE. I
LOCAL FINANCE. I IBY OUR FINANCIAL FDITOR.1 I CARDIFF, FRIDAY, I SETTLING DAYS FOR STOCKS AND SHARES. Cnntinuul'n (lays Tues., Sept. 9 Tues., Sept. 23. Ticket d?T?. I Wed., Sfpt? 10. Wed., Sept. 24. Pjy days. Thm6.,Sept.H 'fhUfS" Sept. 2 1 There has been a relapse in the local market to-day, and the business done has been infinitesimal. Swansea Harbour Stock has been dealt in at 98A, and Bristol and South Wales Wagons at 0. Hails have been entirely neglectcd. Taft's are rather easier, and somewhat freely offered at 74. Barry and Khymuey Stock is still neglected, and in coal shares negotiations have not been suc- cessful. Norths are offered at £ '0 2s. Od., and there are buyers at t4 16s. tld. Internationals show no improvement. Mr. Georgo White has issued another cir- cular, in which be says:- .1 The committee nppointed by the meeting on Tuesday is thoroughly representative, and will certainly spare no p:,ins in bringing about the desired improvement in the working arrangements of the company. The development of the mineral :Ind of the district is such thllt. notwithstanding the cltment of competition, our line must always command a itrgi ;mu remu- nerative trade, and I have every confidence that the result, of the committer's work will be t,c) secure for the ordinary shareholders increased net revenue and a corresponding imptovement in til- value of till) company's stocks. I have to thank the proprietors of between two nnd three millions of stock for I heir support, by proxy and presence at the meeting, which enabled me to cairy the resolution. With the circular Mr. White sends a re-print of the report of the meeting. Con- trary. however, to his own belief, the market in Taff Stock, as we have stated above, is weaker, and the onlv explanation that can be offered is that the result of the meeting was anticipated and sellers made the best of it. Thoso who waited for better prices are now left cut in the cold, as buyers cannot, be found so readily as during the past week". In connection with the Barry craving Dock end Engineering Company (Limited) it will U" interesting to note that Messrs. Thackeray and Co. have had placed in their bands for sa!e 1:20,000 First Four-and-a-Half per Cent. Debentures at JOE. In their circular announcing this fact they give the following particulars in regard to this undertak- mg "The company re-pay at par £ 3,000 per annum, the total amount of the first mimgav* ,llUS heing re-paid in 16 jears from June, lZd9, and it follows that as the re-payments are made the security of the remaining debentures is thereby proportionately increuseci year by year. When half the term lias expired, say in 1533, the remaining unpaid £ 25,000 Fir:it Dbell- tures, instead of £ 47,000 as now, will have a first charge on the property. Tho bone's v. ¡Iiell we have obtained the offer of itre not to be re-paid, the earliest until 1899 and the latest until 1905, and they will thus have a mini- mum period of nine yeats to run, subject to the t owers given the companr of re-payment at pit- upon six months' notice. This option, however, there seems practically no prospect of their exercising. At the present price of 101" they will vield an investor, after allowing for th,« ultimate loss of the premium, between 4} and 4g per corn. Should you wish to secure any portion of th? atwve amount, and will give U an early intimation which b'>nds you prefer, namely, those re-payable in tliM earlier or later portions uf the period 1899 to 1905, we will do what we can 10 meet your wishes Ail the bonds are of £ 500 each, and, therefore, multiples only of that amount can be I had. These bonds appear to us to offer an excel- Imt opportunity of invexting in a thoroughly security, yielding a fair into of interest—•« difficult matter in these days1." The half-yearly meeting of the Penarth Harbour, Dock, and Railway (which is leased by the Tad' Yale Company) was held to-day and was purely formal. 'J he usual 0} per cent. dividend was declared.
