In Naples, it is Pu:cine1!o in FIo'cnce,Stentorel!o orLeporeiio, and there are others which T fer, yet.: but I now recognise the significance of the whitened faces and'J&ose white garments of the two Pierrots in this cliarming wordtcss play. Jane May, who takc--u f.hti I)art of the naughty hoy, Pierrot, is knowjt votli ?ere and in Paris as a most ctever a. lalKll¡L-tÏng actress. Just now "I/Enfant Protligue" is the rage in London, and everybody in saying Have you seen it?'' I am gLid to be able to reply I have, and was delighted." After my p!easant entertainment at the Berke- icy Restaurant the other evening I found a com- fortable stati awaiting me at the Opera, in Covent Garden, where I sat amidst friends, !'s- tening to the most charming opera, Orfeo e Euridice," the music of which was written by the celebrated composer, Gluck, who lived more than a century ago and pro- duced this opera, or ballet." as it was then ca!)ed, in Vienna between the years 17u2 and 17C9. Mad!!e. Gui!ia Havogli is the newest prima donna of the opera season, and this music shows her at her very best. She, of course, takes the part of Orpheus, and her acting is equal to her singinsr, which is saying much, for both are her singiiil-, whicli is sarler ,3ister, Solia, p!a-vs remarkably cxceHent. Some of the music of this charming opera is familiar to us a)!, especially the so:)gat the end Sposa, Eurydice," in w hich Orpheus Jaments the supposed toss of his be!oved wife, who, contrary to the old ctassic story, is restored to life by the mighty power of Love, and as the followers of this devoted pa, 'r "ing w hen they enter at the end of the last scene, of course in Italian, but translated thus— "Though jealous fears may rend the heart When doomed to part from those we love They do but give when faith we prove A bliss supreme, all joys above I" With this pleasant impression we left the old Opera house almost disposed to forgive Mr. Harris for making us so very late in doing so—- by reason of the terribly long "waits" which he imposes on us between the acts. The scenery has been entirely renewed since the Opera appeared for a few nights in November )ast, and there is an attempt made to substitute a classic ballet, for the ordinary con- ventional muslin skirts, &c., to which English batlet lovers are accustomed. The great function of the past week in a cer- tain section of my own circle has been the visit of H.R.H. the Princess Mary, Duchess <)f Teck, to the little Home Hospital fur Sick Children known as St. Monica, at Kifburn, or rather Brondesbury Park, N.W. I described it about Christmas time, when I went to see the Cliilf'ti-cii's fete and Christmas tree, and since then I have often visited the bright p!easant wards and the II kind pood ladies who conduct this most excellent charity—one of the special features of whi'h is the permanency of residence with a view to possible cure or improvement which the chihli"l:n I enjoy here withoutfear of beingdischar.gcd as in- curable with no provision forthef'tture. Jam?ta.d also to know that whilst the little bodies arc well cared for and tenderly nursed, the active little minds are trained in the way they should go, and systematic teaching is carried on with as much regularity as is f-ompa)ih)e with the children's health. Many Icarn to read and write who came in utterly ignorant, and needlework under supervision flourishes among the girls. Before con- senting to become the Patroness of this Hospital, the Duchess of Teck made a visit of inspection, and was greatly pleased w ith all she saw. The day last week when she and her daughter, the charming Princess May came all the way from the White Lodge, Richmond, to spend the afternoon in St. Monica's pretty little hospital will long be a red letter day to all concerned. Without show or parade of any kind this gracious lady travelled by rait to the nearest station to the Home, where she was met by one of the surgeons to the institution, and driven in his carriage to her destination. For some hours she remained in the wards talking to the little ones and quietly asking information as to their ailments and condition. I was one of the fortunate lovers of the Home who was asked to meet the Royal party, and I shall never forget the genuine, simpte, hearty kindness of the much-toved Princess Mary," as she used to be called. ISothing escaped her, and she forgets nothing, for she possesses that rare and royal gift of remembering people and things quite accurately after they have passed from observation, and what she promises she always performs. I had the honour and pleasure of taking tea with the Royal party in a private room in the hospita!, and 1 must say that I never felt more gratined and pleased than when I found myself in a chair next to the gracious lady herself, chatting over the wants of one or two special cases which needed outside help, and talking of some of the many philan. thropic eSbrts in which shf is greatly interested in all parts of London. Her kind sweet face is as handsome as ever, and although she is very stout she holds herself with such nobility and grace that it seems onty to add to her dignity. I was amused to observe that at though H.R.H. professes not to take sugar in her tea, she did so on this occasion, for said she I forgot to put my saccharine bottle into my pocket," at which confession her pretty daughter shook her head and said, "Oh mamma," by way of reproof. I could say a great dea! about this defightCul interview, which I shall not soon forget, for it went far to conSrm my conviction that realty welt born women usually have the charm of manner which sets everybody at their ease and excites at once interest and respect. How little those who try to assume gggrand manners really know what they are. Many a rich iJarrenu thinks she is behaving like a duchess when she tosses her head. snubs her servants, and puts on a high and mighty demeanour to her acquaintance. Mow little such people understand the true grace and beauty of simple unaffected manners, which seem to come naturally to the realty great and well born in fact, it is amongst the upper ten in society that we find Jess anectation or assumption of superiority than in any other c!ass, hence it is always agreeable and refreshing to be brought in contact with representatives of this favoured section of the community in matters of ordinary life. My friend Mrs. Frances Hodgson Hurnett was one of the ladies invited to meet the Duchess and they spoke together of the Cot Mrs. Burnett has just endowed and founded in the Hospital for a child suffering from lung disease, in memory of her own dear boy who died so recently in Paris and whose loss is a deep and lasting sorrow to his mother. It is to be iu the ward of the Good Shepherd," and is to be called the Lionel Burnett Cot," and I know that the earnest desire of the gifted foundress is to surround the future lit'.te inmates of thia cot with every comfort and alleviation to suner- ing, as far as possible, such as her own dear boy had to his latest momenta. How much wtser and appropriate is such a memorial of the happy bright Hfe, which was so aadty and so soon cut short, than any sculptural marbte, however beautiful The one is real, nnd appeals to human love and sympathy the other cotd, sti! and irresponsive' to the deepest feeling of a loving mother's heart. I looked at some of the little cues with special interest as they !ayin their tiny beds, and as I saw one poor little thirsty feilow drinking a large cup full of milk with evident retish,! inquired whether an unlimited quantity of this usually wholesome beverage, was thought good for so frail and suffering a patient. The doctor, in reply, said "Yes, he and most of the others, may drink mitk ad libitum. but not the best milk in the world until it is pcptonised." lie then pro- ceeded to exptain to me the nature and ctlcct of the process known as peptonising mith or liquid food of other kinds. He told me that, the hard, indigestible curds winch ordinary milk is apt to form in a dciicate stomach are prevented altogether by addi; <sma!t quantity Ofwhatiscatled ''Zymine," apeptonisillgpowdcl;, to the milk. Fairchild, an American chemist, originated and prepares these valuable powders. and he nrst demonstrated that they have the power of partly digesting the mitk before it enters the stomach, so reHevinn this delicate organ of part. of its work, and enabling it to absorb and appropriate the realty nutrient elements of food which are in the milk.
