THE LAST OF A HORRIBLEI TRAGEDY.I…
THE LAST OF A HORRIBLE I TRAGEDY. I I in twenty minutes past eight oclocl; yes- terday morning three rrishmen, Mvi.f.s JQYCE, 1'atuick Joyck, and Patrick Casey, expiated upon the scaffold their share in one of the most horrible murders of recent times. In a remote part of Ireland, in the very heart of a wild, desolate region of Cutmemara, at a place called .Maamtrasna dwelt a small farmer named John Joyck with his family, consisting of a wife, his three children, and his mother. He himself was a man in the prime of life, having only reached the forty-fifth year of his age. His wife, a sturdy peasant woman, was five years younger. The mother was a nonagenarian,or nearly, and the children were PEouY,aged nineteen, Michael, aged seven, teen, and Patrick, aged twelve years. John Joyce and his family on the night of Thurs- day, Auust 17, retired to rest in their lonely cabin between the hills, and next morning he, his wife, mother, and daughter were found lying in their blood brutally murdered. The two boys were still living, but they, too, had been attacked by the murderers, and by them no doubt left for dead. The house, as we have stated, was far away from any public road, and approached only by a sheep walk. It was, moreover, windowless, and entirely devoid of furniture, a' few pieces of wood serving all the ordinary domestio purposes of the family. The bed which Joyce and his wife occupied was oomposed of a few planks covered with straw and old clothes, with a decayed barrel for a pillow. JOYCE, who, after the custom of the country, slept naked, was found in that condition next morning with the back of his head battered in, and with two shots in his body just under the right shoulder, which they had penetrated from behind. The wife, who also lay dead upon the wretched pallet from which her husband had sprung on hearing the entry of the assassins, appears to have been attacked in the same way, her head, and the heads of her daughter and mother-in-law as well, having been literally smashed into fragments. The boy Michael, who had been shot in two places in the body, succumbed to his injuries at three o'clock in the afternoon of Friday consoious the whole of the time, and dying ultimately in intensest agony. Patrick escaped shooting only to be beaten about the head with the most ferooious violence by the bloody assassins of the rest of the household. Such briefly is the story of the murder as it was revealed on the morning after its occurrence to the police and others who visited the shambles at Maamtrasna. What could have been the reason for the horrid deed ? The public were a long time in getting at the real cause. All that the survivors of the scene could state was that about one o'clock in the morning the house was entered by three or four armed rufKans who fired a number of shots, of which at least two were aimed at MICHAEL. Revenge, and not plunder, was the motive of the murderers, that was very evident. The potato patch which Joyce rented was not a source of revenue, nor the miserable hovel in which he and his family resided any place likely to contain a store of old-that was patent to everybody. It was only too apparent that this was but a repetition upon a larger and more ghastly scale of the old, old story of agrarian crime. The surmises which had been at first formed soon grew into certainty, and Justice, although slow in tracking the assassins, did her work in this oase surely. The men who took part in the attack on the house of the JoycE family were ten in number, and their movements were traced with distinct- ness from the time they first sallied forth upon their errand of blood until the meroiless work had been accomplished. On their way to Maamtrasna the principal actors in the tragedy passed through a village called Cappana Creagh, near Derry, where lived two other Joyceb, ANTHONY and JOHN, who with PATRICK JOYCE, the son of the latter, watched them go up to the house where their victims lay buried in sleep. And then commenced the work of violence and butchery. The murderers foroed tho door and fired into the house. One of the watchers heard shots, screams, and the cry of a woman. Too terri- fied to interfere, the three Joyces returned home and left the assassins to their work. As the Attorney-Generai., in launching the case against the accused, stated, had the evidence of the Joyces remained unsup- ported it would have been sutfioient to con- vict the persons indicted. Hut, as if to sottle the proof of their guilt beyond all possibility of doubt, one of the accused, a man named Philiii.v, turned Queen's evidence, and his story it was that forged tht last link necessary to make the chain complete. The substance of this man's statement was that upon the Thursday night of the mur. der he aud the prisoner Casey who fetched him for that purpose—went together to Casey's house, where they fell in with the eight oihers, with whom they proceeded to the hous" of the people who bad been marked 1 autforti.?truction. The prisoner PATmcK Joyo who was armed with a revolver, en- tered the house and fired some shots, and l? I'hilbin, unab!e to control himself any j longer, (led the scene of slaughter. It was slear that the attack was carefully planned, snd systematically carried out. The j principal actor in it was arrested two j« iays after its commission, and in hi.-i I. 1 uuuso une iouna a pair of trousers' which, though recently washed, still retained traces of human blood. Phii.bin maintained that he had been brought into the transaction innocently, and there were, no doubt, good grounds for the nolle jtroaerjui which the Crown asked lor and obtained his particular case. The jury first found guilty the (1)an Patrick Joyce, and then in rotation the other two. Myi.i.s Joyce, whose execution was marked by the peculiarly shocking circumstances else- where described, protested from the first in the most solemn and awful manner his iuno'ence of the crime laid to his charge, Five of the other prisoners, under the advice of their counsel, pleaded guiltv, but though sentenced to death in the usual form they were respited, on the ground Pmt, although equity guilty in the eye of the law, theirs wu* unquestionably the ">1' moral respoiiflmli'y which must al,va,? [tti?ch to men whn are merely accessories to "rimes connived and imti?.ttcd by others. \Úlh the execution of the three men on' I'riduy morning the curtain dropped upon a I; scene wLjoil marked the annals of even Irish .rime with a deeper red. If the conviction ud sentence of the murderers will serve to show the unhappy country of tbjr I)irth that ¡ upon the men who raise their hailds against :hl'ir fellows waits ven^eanc. sure and ter- J •i'ule, if not swift, then will not the sword ,,1' 1 iti.-lice have descended, lior the lives of tlie wor peasants of Maamtrasna have been I sacrificed in vain. 1
TIIE ILLNESS OF THE BISHOP…
TIIE ILLNESS OF THE BISHOP OF LLANDAFF. CRITICAL CONDITION OF HIS I LORDSHIP. All classes of tlie community, not only in the Diocese of Liandaff but throughout, the whole of South Wales, will learn with regret that the illness nf the venerable Bishop of LlandafF has assumed a character which causes the gravest auxiety to his family. His lordship is not suffering from any 6¡Jedtic malady. and his condition does not pre- sent any complications to embarrass his medical attendant, lie is simply a sufferer from the ine- vitable consequences of old age. For some time past his fragile fralne has shown tigns of a break- down under the labours of his oflice, and it was because of his evident weakness and decre- pitude that the confirmation service, which took place at Llandaff on the 23th ult., was held in the bishop's chapsl instead of in tho cathedral. His lordship was then under medioJ attendance, and it was at considerable risk that he ventured to leave his house two days later to re- ceive the magnificent portrait which his numerous friends had caused to be painted as a mark of the universal esteem and affection in which lie was held in the diocese in which for so long a period he has exercised spiritual supervision. Duriag the past few days he has been confined to his bed, an.1 his weakness has increased to such an extent that he is unable to obtain much rest or to partake of proper nourishment. He suffers some pain, and under the strain to which his con- stitution is now subject a change which may render his condition hopeless may very soon take place. At present his lordship is not in imminent danger, and were he able to get rest and nourishment he might recover some of his strength, But, as we have stated, his state of health is such as to cause grave anxiety, and his medical adviser deems it necessary to make frequent visits to his bedside. His lordship spent a rather restless night on Thursday, and on Friday he was in a very weak and exhausted condition. During the day lie improved a little, and at night he showed a disposi- tion to sleep. FRIDAY, Midnight. During the evening his lordship had about four hours' sleep, and on awaking lie was more easy and composed j but he continues to take little nourishment, and it is evident that he is gradually losing strength. He retains his consciousness, and converses with perfect intelligence. The whole of the members of the family are now at Llandaff, with tho exception of a son, who is expected this (Saturday) morning.
THE ILLNESS OF MR. FAWCETT.
THE ILLNESS OF MR. FAWCETT. The first bulletin issued on Friday statesM Mr. Fawcett has passed a fairly good night. The rheumatism is still present, but in other respects he holds his ground." The following bulletin was issued on Friday night t—" Mr. Fawcett has passed a moderately comfortable day. The rheumatic affection is sub- siding, and the general condition is, upon the whole, satisfactory." Mr. T. Fawcett, M.A., The College, Merthyr, writing U8 yesterday, says « A paragraph ap- peared in tho 4estern Mail on Tuesday to the effect that my brother had undergone tho opera- tion of tracheotomy. I have had such numerous inquiries as to whether the statement is correct that I shall be greatly obliged if you will kindly publish the following extract, which I have re- ceived from his private secretary this morning There is not the smallest foundation for the report that the operation of tracheotomy has been performed on Mr. Fawcett. The throat was never bad enough to put any difficulty in the way of nourishment being freely taken. The statement which we published was com- municated to our representative In answer to inquiries made at the Posttniwter-Ueneralls house. We are only too glad, however, to be assured that the patient's condition is such as to have rendered the operation unnecessary.
THE SALISBURY ELECTION._I
THE SALISBURY ELECTION. PETITION AGAINST THE RETURN II OF MR. KENNARD. Apotiiion against the return of Mr. Coleridge II Kennard, Conservative, recently elected for Salisbury, was filed late on Friday afternoon. The news has created the greatest excitement in Salisbury. !!T
MR. FORSTER ON PUBLIC I AFFAIRS.
MR. FORSTER ON PUBLIC I AFFAIRS. Mr. rorster speaking at a mass meeting of Liberals in Glasgow on Friday night, said that the lessons taught by the result of the Liverpool election were various, chief amongst them being that the country recognised in Mr. Gladstone the greatest Minister of modern timee, and that Liberalism was now stronger in the country than even at the last general election. It was a matter of congratulation that neither Liberal nor Tory candidates lend them. selves to the view, of those who, in advo- cating Home Rule, supported lawlessness and disorder. Coming to foreign politics, Mr Forstcr said that while agreeing with Lord Derby that it would be well to leave Egypt as eoon M the Khedive could stand bv him- ?el he held that our first duty was to see that Egypt had a good government, because its Governor wae only able to stand with our support. Wo should that slavery was not encouraged by high Egyptian officials. We had a similar duty to perform m South Africa, for, although we had given the Boers their independence, it was our duty to see that the natives were Dot ill-treated Ho said the county franchise must soon be passed and with it a strong measure for redistribution of seats.
