The Dowlais Philharmonic Choral Society have decided to compete in the chief choral competition at Llanelly. Mr. Henry Evans has been appointed conductor. The workmen of the Limited Alkali Company, at a meeting presided over by the Mayor, decided to accept the Company's terms, namely 2d. per hour reduction, and work was re-commenced on Monday, but at present on short time only. Much satisfaction is felt at this amicable settlement of the dispute. The coal, coke, and patent fuel shipments of the Customs port of Cardiff last year amounted to 15,250,000 tons, compared with 13,450,000 tons, in 1893. This shows an increase of 1,800,000 tons, and, had the average been maintained during the last two months, the exports would have exceeded those of 1893 by 2,000,000 tons. As it is, the increase over 1892—the record year up to that date—is about 1,300,000 tons. There is also a substantial improve- ment in imports, but the figures are not yet available. The total trade of the port, however, is likely to work out at something like 17,250,000 tons.
