CAIiDIFF EXCHANGE.
CAIiDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKö, MONDAY, Easiness at the docks is still maintained with full vigour, and, with the near approach of the holidays, it is a very difficult matter to obtain best steam coal for anything like prompt delivery. On 'Change to-day this commodity was in good request at enhanced figures, and the same remark applies to house coal and patent fuel. The pit- wood market continued steady, and there was an unabated demand for small coal and Welsh coke at last figures. In our local freight market to-day a moderate amount of activity was dis- played in all departments, but with only a limited SUpply of tonnage on offer the business eS-jded was hardly up to the average of the past few weeks. Outward rates for Constantinople, T\ 1! Said,; Alexandria, Black Sea, and JJanube were fairly well maintained. Sicilian, Adriatic, Algerian, and Italian freights were steady. West Indian, Spanish, Gibraltar, ranch Bay, and coasting freights continue un- changed. The following comprise the latest opetations:— Malta, 103 (Thos. Allen). Ancona, 12s 61 fuel, clean and combination terms fit charter (Staleck). Alicante, 10, nett COQditions (Rolandeck). bulina, 12s 300 delivery, f.f.c., f.d (Alice Otto). Lisbon, 81 9 i (Fawn). Barcelona, 14. L«s Palnus, 9, 3 Malta, 103 (Oarl Rahtkens). Uenoa, option Savona, 10s 3d, combination terms 01 charter 01 charter (Cyfarthfa). Trouvilln, 7s 6J (Ferrief (Internationa1)' Havre, 6s 6d (Springbok). MON RY MARKET. --
MON RY MARKET. LONDON, Monday. The Money Market has been quiet, in spite of some preparations for to-morrow's account. With the present abundance of money there should be t n no difficulty about loans, but although just now the market is distinctly easy, its future has been rendered the more uncertain from the growing weakness of the American Exchange and the in. li iferent Associated Banks' statement, the surplus reserves being now only £ 150,000. Day to day loans were 1 to 2, and advances over Thursday 3! par cent. Discount rate for three months' Bank Mil* was 3i per cent. Paris Cheque Exchange is 25 23; Benin Short, 20 33. The fresh business on the Stock Exchange to-day was not large. The account commences to- morrow, and that has been one check to fresh operations, to say nothing of the usual desire to reduce commitments as much as possible during the last month of the year. There was some- thing erratic about movements in prices to-day, .ind symptoms of weakness were not wanting. A reaction in Nitrates was observed, which was looked upon as rather ominous, and as question- ing the value of reports that a large amount of stock was likely to be taken up on this acaount. Minea also were dull at times, but Home Railways continued in favour Consols closed ar 97 to 97 xd for delivery, and 97 5-16 "n 97 7-16 xd for account 2jn«rCent. (Guilders'), 99i o 991 xd 21 per Out., 94i to 95! xd. Local Loans Stock, 102 to 102 xd. Foreign Bonds were deficient in vitality. Some little inquiry was noticed fi r international issues, which were mostly firm. Egyptian and Spanish closed rather be;ow best points. Turks and Italians were fairly steady, and so were Hunga- r-ar^R'Vsians, and Greeks. South Americana, were a dull market. There Ti n(I (jues^wmng the fact that the financial position of the Argentine Republic is not liked, and, in consequence, the inclination is to sell these stocks. Brazilian scrip elosed at 5 discount. The few changes in Home Railways were of a favourable character. Scotch stocks were chiefly in demand, and closed firm. Caledonian were prominently strong on the publication of parti- culars of a scheme for the division of stock. North ,c British hardened in sympathy, but not to the same extent. Heavy lines were generally firm, and they mostly closed g to I higher, labour troubles notwithstanding. Nortr-Western was exceptionally strong at. a rise of 1. It is not expected that there will be any heavy de- liveries of "lock this account. Hull and Barns- ley and Sheffield Deferred to-ks were steady. Brighton A Stock was strong in the morning at 163i, but gave way a little on publication of the ,,iiittic statement showing an increase of oniy -1,149. Stock is, however, too well held in the house to allow of any serious drop. South Eastern A was stronger. In Canadian Railways business was quiet. Grand Trunks were comparatively neglected, but Canadian Pacific was firm at first, but closed weak and lower. The "paeulative spurt in American Railways has again died down a little. \Vall-3treet is reported to be looking mcra hopefully upon the oositiou, and is disposed to buy back the stocks L'tely so persistently pressea ou the market. Movements hero to- ay were of no importance, but were irregular. Louisville and Nashville "nd Northern Pacific Preference, as well as Union Pacific, were mostly steady, but many other ;.CA weaker, and left off duli. Nitrate Ruils were dull, and closed distinctly weak on realisations due to the I pposltiou line to L^gunas. There was some attempt to put up Mexican (Vera Ouz) issues eariy in the day, but it was more or less a failure. The following changes have occurred in prices since Saturday:—Foreign-Stocks—rise Egyptian U,\it¡"d, | French 4 par Cent., i; Hungarian, 1881, A; and Italian, 3 16.
