-0_- AATURDA T, SEPT. 18. 1880. The long-standmg subjech of dispute be- tween the Churchmen and Nonconformiata of l\Iaestcg, on the subject of additional burying ground for the pariah, was again under discussion by the Burials Boar 1 on Thursday evening, when it was nnally re- solved that the seal of the Board should be auixed to a memorandum of agreement be- tu'esn Mr Llewelyn, of Court Colmau, and the Board, as to the purchase of two acres of land for the extension of LIangynwyd church- yard. At the annual dinner of the Carmarthen- shire Agricultural Society the Liberal mem- ber for the county, Mr W. R. H. PoweU, was present, and, in replying to the toast of the county members, while avoiding politica, said he would like to see all inferior barley made into malt, and used for feeding pur- l poses. As to the proposed county meeting, he would suggest that it be confined to animals from the tlu-ee counties. Mr L. P. Pugh, member for Cardiganshire, was also =1 present. The speeches made by the local Liberal members at the dinner following the Brecon Agricultural Show dinner, seemed to have caused the Tory landlords to set up their backs, judging from an article we print else- where. The acrimony of these rancorous gentlemen found an exponent in Mr Wil- liams, of Aberyskir Court, who, when Mr Cyril Flower, M.P., offered a subscription to the Society, said the Society" was well off for funds, and the committee must decline the money. On Thursday evenicg the Rev. Dr Angua delivered a lecture on the Revision of the Bible. The!ecturer stated that by the new l'¡''¡¡Oll Chrtstiaua would at least get rid of the innumerable objections now made in pul- pits and schools necessarily by the face that there was no standard revision to which they cculd appeal, and his own opinion was that doubt would be removed and faith con- armed by the noble work now in progress, and which he hoped would soon be in the hands of the people. Cn Thursday a presentation was made at Hisea to Mr. Llewelyn, late manager of the Riaca Colliery, who- is next week leavin, this country for Chili. The presentation consisted of an illuminated testimonial to Mr Llewelyn, a silver"salver to Mrs Llewelyn, and a small stiver tankard to each of their six children. At the Cardin' Police-court yesterday, a mnn named John Dono.van Was sent to gaol for three months for a violent assault on a police-constable. A Board of Trade inquiry was opened at Cardie yesterday, into the stranding and ultimate loss of the Silurian ss, of Cardiff near H:u-tl;md Point, on the north-west coast of Devon, on the ;)rù of September. The captain and chief mate having been examined, the court adjourned. A lad named John Jones, aged 16, died at Merthyr on Thursday evening, as the result of fearful injuries incurred by beina run M\'er by a mineral train when trying to°jump ontothewagons.

In consequence of the presence of a lar-e number of piggeries round the ccnvict prison at Wormwood Scrubs, it is said that typhoid fever has broken out. A convict named Bryant has died from the disease, and a warder is in the inHrmary, suffering there- from. An investigation is to be made into the matter. The Rev. Sir John Seymour, Canon of Gloucester, died yestecday morning. The latest intelligence from Scaham Col- liery says that 15 bodies have now been brought up, and 10 have been identiijed. A letter received by Lord Londonderry saya that Her Majesty h&s beeu extremely shocked by the s:M.l details, and the terrible anxiety the relives of the unfortunate men must have suHered. Thx Queen was very ir'ad lie had communicated her expressions of sympathy to the relative?. At a conference of South Staffordshire miners, yesterday, it was decided to recommend that meeting of employers and employed be h&ld throughout the South Staffordshire district, with a view to the price of coal being raised and -the miners' wagea increased. It was stated that in maoy districta colliery pro- prietors were being ruiued by the low prices charged, and that the miners were being starved to death through the small amount of wages received. The committee of the North and Norths- East Lancashire Cotton Spinners and Managers Association met yesterday, and in view of the threatened strike of weavers at Accrington recommended every master to adopt short time to the extent of three days a week. William Edward Morris, who was injured in the accident at Nine Elms on Saturday last, and underwent an amputation of the leg, died in St. Thomas's Hospital yesterday morning. This makes the sixth death. The Trades' Union Congress met again yesterday, when resolutions were carried urging reform of the patent laws so as to secure to inventors, by reasonable payments, benenta of their inventions, abolition of im- prisonment for debt, as being a glaring piece of injustice; and the representation of labour in Parliament. On this resolution trades' unions were called upon to do their utmost to return competent men of their own order to Parliament, and it was added that all duly elecu d members should, if they deem it advisable to claim the same, be entitled to receive from the State fair and honourable compensation for their services. Mr Nannetti, of Dublin, delivered an address on the Iriah Land system, and a resolution was carried adding the land question to the Parliamentary programme of the congress. Mr Broadhurst, M.P., was re-elected secre- tary of the Parliamentary Committee. The last sitting of the congress will be held to- day.
QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY IN IRELAND.…
QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY IN IRELAND. IT is pheasant to turn from the dark and dire scenes which exhibit the siater-islo as going with rapid speed towards a state of complete anarchy, and rend the report just published ou the "Condition and Progress of the Queen's University in Ireland, for the year 1879-30." The Duke of LsiNSTER, who is Chancellor of the University, is responsible for this report. It appears that at the various examinations held last year 744 Candidates presented themselves, the subjects being Medicine and Arta and Engineering. The principal public meeting of the University to confer degrees and diplomas, and distribute prizes, was held in St. Patrick's-hall, Dublin Castle, on the 15th of October,1879. At this meeting the Chancellor was able to make the gratify- ing announcement that for several years the number of students of the various religious denominations in Ireland-wlio received their University education in the Colleges of the Queen's University has been steadily in- creasing. In 1876 it was 810 in 1877 it ro3c to 844; in 1873 to 88S and last year it reached its maximum, namely, 920. We may add that as the Reports of the three colleges which are affiliated to the Queen's University have all been issued, they show tha*. this increase is not due to one or two of the three, but that the sun of prosperity has shed his lustre upon them all. Cork, L'elfast, and Galway come to us with the same gladdening tale. As the Duke of LsiNSTER stated at the pub- lic meeting, this represents work of great educational value, for these young men have been &att<t fide students receiving their instruction from the professors of tho University, and undergoing ex- aminations brought into an intimate relation with the 0 teaching functions of the University. In short, the Queen's Univer- sity is something more than a mere examin- ing board with pcwer to confer degrees. It is not an institution like London University, at which students matriculate, and then break oil all visible connection with it until the time comes for graduating. The Queen's University in Ireland is, so to speak, the mother of three colleger which are like sisters formed after one pill-,tern. At these colleges students receive instruction in medicine, arts, and law, under pro- fessors appointed for the purpose. The value of such training is too great to be over- looked, and we hope that those who arc taking a lively interest in promoting higher education in Wales will carefully consider the propriety of adapting the Queen's University system to the Principality. In Wales a few good teaching colleges are needed, and if we could have these bound up in one harmonious whole, so as to form a University of Walec, we might easily settle one of the points which will have to be brought under discussion. It is known to many of our readers that at a meeting of the Cymmrodorion Section of the Carnarvon National Eisteddfod, held last month, Mr Hucn: OwEN read a very able and suggestive paper on H Intermedi- .Y, e ate Education in Ireland and Secondary Education in Wales," in which, after giving a somewhat full account of the former, lie stated that while he did not recommend that a preciaely similar provision should be made in the interest of Secondary Education in Wales,le thought that in framing a scheme for Wales we might fairly consider the pro- priety of proceeding on the lines of the Irish scheme. We would suggest a similar: treatment of the University problem in Wales. It might oe supposed that in Ireland the religious difficulty would be altogether insu- perable, but, if we may rely upon the reports of the Chancellor of the University, and the Presidents of the three Colleges, this has not been the case. The Duke of LEiNSTER in- forms us that In the 920 students oa the register last year the religious denominations in Ireland are well represented. He tella us t-hat in each yer-from 1876 to 1879— rather more than one-third of the students have been Presbyterians one-fourth Catho- lics one-fourth members of the Church of Ireland, and the remainder members of I other denominations. Dr. SULLIVAN, Pre- sident of Quean's College, Cork, informs ua in his Report that the principle of tha Colleges Act is, that Parliament should pro- vide secular teaching only, while the various religious bodies should make provision for the religious instruction and training of the students of their respective denominations. He cites the 14th section of the Act, which provides that "No student shall be compelled by any rule of the College to "attend any theological lecture or religious "instruction other than is approved by his parents or guardians, and that no reli- "gious test shall bo administered to any "person in order to cntide him to "be admitted a student of any such College, or to hold any oSce therein, or to partake of any advantage or privilege thereof." Anything less un- sectarian than this cannot, with any degree of fairness or propriety, be adopted in Wales, not merely because, as President ScLHVAN observes, public money should be applied for the beneSt of the people without distinction of religious belief, but also because a large proportion of the subjects taught in Colleges have nothing whatever to do with religious beliefs. Who for instance, would object to OOLESO'S Algebra," or to Bishop CoLENso himself as a teacher of arithmetic or algebra ? What Churchman would ob- ject to have his son taught Greek by Principal EDWARDS, of the University College of Wales, or what Nonconformist would tremble at the thought of having his son sitting at the feet of Principal JAYNE, of St. David's College, La-mpeter, to learn the same language. If such objectors could be found, they would have to be dealt with as impracticable men. Even Hebrew, bein<r d J '=' conSned mainly to Old Testament reading might be taught by an Orientalist of any religious faith, and, for many reasons, it would be well to include it in the Uiiivprdty curriculum, so that students proceeding from a University College to a Hall of Divinity or' Theology might have some pre- vious acquaintance with the language. Dr. MoFFET, President of Queen's College, Galway, whose report is fuU of interest and suggestiveness, makes one very important observation bearing upon the necessity for intermediate education. He alleges that among the various causes which have re- tarded the progress of University education in Ireland, perhaps the greatest was the want of a good supply of local schools, where the young could be sufficiently educated to enter at once, and with adequate prepara- tory instruction, upon the more advanced courses of Collegiate study. He informs us that the universal extension of the National System of Education had the natural, though unintended, effect of displacing a large number of schools of that humble character which were formerly found in almost every village, and at which one could obtain a considerablo amounc of classical and scientinc training. This is exactly what many predicted as a misiortune which would of necessity be visited upon Scotland by the passing of an Elementary Education Act there. In England it could not have that eG'ect, for the simple reason that English people have been, in the main, indifferent to the benefits of University training. Ox- ford and Cambridge were for long the resorts, not of Churchmen merely, but wealthy Churchmen. Education was not dreamt of as a fit companion for poverty. Hence the schools which should have supplied inter- mediate instruction in England—we mean the Endowed Schools-were allowed, in most instances, to go to wreck. But before introducing the Elementary Education Biil which became law in 1870, the Liberal Government passed the Enlowcd Schools Act, 1869. Ireland has also Lad au Inter- mediate Education Act, and Wales must have one too. Whatever the reason may be, the study of law is at a discount ill the Queen's Colleges in Ireland. Out of 185 students in attendance at the Ga'way CoMege, only 10 were law students; Belfast supples only 16 out of 494 while Cork supplies only one out of 105. Thia is not very promising for a nation msiaHDg on havini Home Rule, but it accords not so badly with anarchy If we refer to the Duks ot LEiNSTER's Report, which is a sum- ming up of the three Reports already men- tioned, we find that in the Faculty of Arts 23 candidates passed tlicr extit,, initioji for tha degree of M.A., of whom 16 were deemed worthy of University honours. Fifty-seven presented thex)sclvc.} for t:e degree of R A., of whom 55 satisfied the examiners, and of these 27 gained high distinctions. In the Faculty of LtW five Bachelors in Arts pre- sented themselves for the degree of Bachelof in Laws, and satisned the examiners. Two candidates presented themselves and passed for the degree of Doctor in Law°. One pre- sented himself and passed for the diploma of Elementary Law. In Medicine the stndenta may be reckoned by the hundred. It is seldom that one mceta with more gratifying reports thaa those to whk'h wo have just called attention. They are highly encoat?- aging, and go far to prove that denomina- tional and ecclesiastical diiYcrences need not give rise to any dimculty in providing fox the higher education of a people, if men are only wise enough not to stick their creeds up at obstacles for everybody to knock hi< head aga nst.

----THE BUHIALS ACT AT MESTEa
THE BUHIALS ACT AT MESTEa EXTENSION OF THE CHURCHYARD. A meeting of the Burials Board was hetd oa Thursday evening, when all the me;ubers but two were present. Mr J. Barrow presided. The principal busines?, hich gave rise to a somewhat long diacussion, was the afBxing the seal of the board to a 'Memorandum of fgrecment between Mr Llewel.) n, of Court Uo!mnn, and tb< board, as to the purchase of two acres ot land at the vtttage of LIangynwyd, f&r the extension of the pre-ent churchyard. At the previous meeting Mr J. U. Thomas protested against aHixing the board's seal to the document, because (1) the land had not been ex m'ned by the board (2). it had not been submitt dfor the approval of thw vestry, and (3) the matter should be fu)!y con" sidered thereafter by the board.—Mr Thomas stilt objected to affixing the seal that evening, —Mr Roberta was of opinion that after the passing of the Burial Act of 1880 the question of providing additiut:a) burial-ground foe Lian'' cynwyd Parish may have t;ken a new phase. The religious d'tEculty I ad b- eii removed, and he thought that they it d now suSicie'tt reason for going before the } ubiic once more.
