[srECIALI-Y TELEGRAPHED.] LONDON, FRIDAY EVENING. Beyond a slight recovery in American Exchanges, the rate being now four dollars BOt cents, the position of the money market has not appreciably altered. The supply of capital is not large, but day-to-day advances n Consols are to be had at 11. In discounts business remains quiet, and three months' bills are taken at 2.} per cent. 4 Dulness prevailed on the Stock Exchange. The fear that some fresh complica- tions may arise in the East caused the general selling of all stocks, and both home and foreign securities have given way. Con- tinental bourses are reported weak. Any gerioua decline in Englishrailways is checked by the expectation of a further important extension in the home trade, and the conse- quent corresponding increase in traffics of the principal companies later on in the season. Consols were unaltered for delivery, but I lower for the account, at 71 to 97 for both. Reduced and New Three per Cents, to 00. Heaviness prevailed in the English Rail- way Market. Speculators for the rise have been closing their accounts, being tempor- arily deterred from continuing from the dread of European complications, and from less favourable weather. Both goods and passenger lines about equally suffered, but the last prices were not the worst. North- Eastern fell 1 Jj Caledonian, Great W esterr, Sheffield Deferred, Midland, North Stafford- shire, nnd So nth-Eastern A, Brighton A, North-Western, and North British, Chat- ham, and Metropolitan District, j Great Eastern, k. Indian Railways were quiet but fairly steady. The Canadian Railway Market, without being active, opened tolerably firm at an oc- casional improvement, but closed weak. Most Grand Trunks and Great Western fell i to t. American Railways were dull, at a general decline, Erie, Pennsylvania, Illinois Central, and Atlantic and Great Western were all lower. Oregon was flat on the announce- ment that there will be no dividend. Eries fell i. Very little was dono in Foreign Railways, I and but few changes were noticed. Mexicans, with steady receipts up to July 10th, show an increase of about £32,000 since the com- mencement of the year. Foreign Bonds met with but little atten- tion. The Continental bourses have biea dull, and the heaviness has been reflected here. There Las been no particular move- ment ia any stocks, but speculative issues have g n n way, Egyptian fell to § Hun- »arian gold, § Mexican 5-16d Italian, Turkish' tribute, 1 other issues 1-16 to Telegraphs were iirm, with only trifling ihan-zes. Banks.—Chartered of India, Joint Stock, wad Union of Australia rose 1" Oiiental, 2 Union of London fell Mines.—West Frauccs fell 3, to Oo Wesc Tolus 2, to 511; Cape Copper rose 4 t Bodiurij unaltered. W,tterwork-i. -East London rose 1 Lam- beth 10 per cent, 2. Tramways.—Glasgow Tramway rose i. Miscellaneous P. and O. S:eam rose 1 Assam Tea, 2; Darjeeiing, 1¡., At the Bank £50,000 in- sovereigns were withdrawn for Lisbon. About £ 183,037, in- cluding 130 sovereigns from Melbourne, are due from the East on the 25th instant. Silver was quiet bars were quoted at 52 3-lod Mexican dollars, 51J. Indian Exchanges were flat, without altera- tion in prices. The Bombay rate on Lon- don was quoted Is 8 Mod Calcutta, Is 3 Hong1 Kong, 3s 9d; Shanghai, 58 2$d Rupee paper, four per cent, SOi to 80i fnnr and a half per cent, 87 to 87i-. Referring to communications on the subject of the Spanish Three per Cent External Debt, which have recently appeared in the public press, the Council of Foreign Bondholders state that the basis of the arrangement con- cluded in L /iiJon on the 15th of July, 18/0, provided that coupons payable 31stDeccl;lbd, 1881, to 30ch June, 1882, inclusive, should be paid at the rate of It per cent per annum, I r-(3 but the law of the Spanish Cortes, of 21st July, 1870, by which the arrangement was r_1 ratified, introduced certain modifications, and amongst these the postponement for six months of the date fur payment of the in- creased rate of interest. A telegram from New York states that the new shafc or the Emma Mine has been sunk 90 feet, and that the machinery is working j well: The Grand Trunk Railway ot-Canada I Botify that, after taking the best legal advice, they have resolved to declare a dividend at the rate of 3 t*>r cent 011 the Second Preference Stocks.

CARMARTHENSHIRE AGRICUL'IURAL…
CARMARTHENSHIRE AGRICUL- 'IURAL SOCIETY, ANNUAL SHOW AND DINNER. The weather conditions under which the Carmarthenshire Agricultural Society's annual show was held at Carmarthen on Friday were most advantageous. The number of entries for the Carmarthen Show has been steadily increasing during recent yearq, and on Friday they were 29 in advance of 1879. This, too, in spite of the fact that owing to bad ti.i.es and loweredsubscriptions, the prizes have been considerably reduced. In the cart gelding or mare class there were 22 entries for a prize of t-vo guineas, and many other classes were similarly well filled. At the Carmarthen 3how black stock have generally been pre-eminent, but some held the opinion that this year the shorthorns excelled in number and quality. Herefords were fairly represented in the classes for any pure breed other than black or shorthorns. The two-year-old heifers and aged bulls of the shorthorns were not so good as at Newcastle Emlyn on Wednesday, but the short- horn cows were better. Horses were a fine show, the best in the aggregate that has been held at Carmarthen for several years, while the agricul- tural or draught clashes were of such quality and number as have, perhaps, not been excelled here. Cobs and carriage hordes were well represented, while the suckling c,.Its and fillies were a very large class. Sheep and pigs were excellent and the latter numerous. The former did not probably number a3 many as in more recent years. The class for black bulls with a herd book pedigree was fairly good. The prize winner was successful at Narberth, on Tuesday, while Mr Thomas Jones, of Dyffrin Conning's, Emperor 2ud. which won a silver cup at Llanboidy, was put off with a highly commended card, being de- fective behind the shoulders. Viscount Emlyn's shorthorn bull, which was first at St. Clears, also took President's prize here, Mr Marsh, of TowynV; animal being coarser and out of condi- tion. The decision in the yearling black bull class confirmed those at Llanboidy and St. Clears. In shorthorn yearling bulls, the prize winner was j considered one of the best of its age in the yard. Viscount Emlyn's, heifer calves, of any other pure breed," were really worth looking at, Mr D. Prosser's, though very good, being too young to show to advantage beside his lordships. The prize winners in sheep were mostly animals which have been distinguished at St. Clears, Llanboidy, and Narberth shows. The judges were Of horses, Mr J. P. V. Pryse, J.P., Bwlch- bychan, and Captain H. Vauglian, Brynog of coloured cattle and sheep, Mr A. Smith, Buck- lands, Brecon, and Mr R. Williams, Scethrog, Breccn; of black cattle aud Ijg., Mr W. Jenkins, Glanwern, and Mr T. Thomas, Lhvymnendi.— The president this year is Air J. S. Tregonning, of Iscoed, Ferryside; infl Mr David Prosser still contiuues to act as a courteous and energetic hou. secretary. The foliowing are the awards :— CAITLE.—Hull of the black breed, not exceeding four years old 1, R, Morris, Marledge F. rni, Pembroke. Mr WILLIAMS urged the landlord to support the blacks, their own breea of cattle, by coming out and giving prizes like gentlemen. (Laughter and applause.) Nothiufi would go by the blacks in this country. TT T Capt. HORSMAN ana, x^u JULOYD acknow. ledged the patriotic toast. The former commented upon the struggles of farmers during recerityears, aud said that while in England farmers had been unfortunate, and in Ireland no one cared to pay rents, in Wales the farmers bad been honest and straightforward in their difficulties. He hoped their landlords would meet them and give a good reduction of rents. (A voice No shooting !") The PRESIDENT ve Tlje members of the House of Commons, coupiecl with the names of Mr Powell and Mr Pugh. Mr W. E, H, POWELL acknowledged the toast on behalf of his noble colleague (Lord Eudyn* and Mr B. T. Williams, M.P. He had never shirked his duty he had attended constantly, and had never paired. At the time of the general elec- tions he thought everyone ought to exert himself to the utmost to carry the principles wLich lie held, but after the election the matters connected with it ought not to be^allosved to interfere witli private friendship. (Voice: "I don't know about that.") Their divergences were so slight that they should not be allowed to interfere with the wish they all had for the prosperity of agriculture, (Applause.) As to their county meeting, he would suggest, as a means of improving it, that for a couple of years the prizes should be confined to animals from these three counties, for it was to them they had to look for the im. provement of the breeds. lie suggested that the Carmarthen show should be placed last in the season, and the cha;) pion classes should be arranged for prize animals at the other shows in the three counties. (Applause.) He must say that the show that day was much in advance of previous years, particularly in agricultural horses. (Cheers.) Mr L. P. Puutl, J.P., met with a hearty re- ception. He said lie was quite sure that nothing tended so much to the improvement of agricul- ture as the encouragement of those meetings. (Ai plause.) With regard to the House of Com- mons, Mr Powell's and his own experience of sit- ting through the nights of debate was no joke. H9 failed to see how ^eo; le could be firerl with am. bition to go to the House of Commons. (Laughter.) He said at.the time of the election—and ti, ere was no harm in saying it then—that the Welsh mem. bers needed a little of the spirit of members from across the Channel. (Laughter.) They had an object and they fought till they got it. He would not have them imitate the Irish members altogether, but only to have a little of that spirit. (Laughter and cheers.) Mr POWLLL gave the "'Health of the president," who in his turn proposed "Success to the society," coupled with the name of Mr J. Leivis Phiii; ps, Bolahaul. INTERESTING PRESENTATION ATI…
INTERESTING PRESENTATION AT I RISCA. THE LATE MANAGER AND THE WORKMEN. Mr Llewelyn Llewelyn, the late esteemed manager of the Risca Colliery, having accepted an appointment as general manager of extensive works in Chili, the workmen and officials of the colliery and other friends determined to mark his departure from amongst them by presenting him with a testimonial expressive of their confidence and esteem. The testimonial consisted of au illuminated aldresa to Air Llewelyn, magnificently executed by Waterlow and Sons; a silver salver to Airs Llewelyn, supplied by J. H. Benson and Co.; and a small silver tankard to each ot we six children, supplied by Mr Nugent Wells, New- port. The presentation took pltee at the Exchange Inn, Risca, on Thursday evening. A substantial spread was provided by Host Langley. Mr Evan Evans, chairman of the presentation committee, presided, and was supported by Messrs Llewelyn Wilkinson, Rev. Basil Williams (vicar), Dr. Edward Rowbathan, Mr W. Thomas (Brown and Adams, Cardiff), &c.&c. Mr George Brooks occupied the vice chair. After the removal of the cloth and the usual loyal toasts had been proposed, The Rev. BASIL WILLIAMS responded to the toast of the 'Clergy and ministers of all denomina- tions," aiid Lieutenant T. M. BAUKS^responded to the toast of the" Army, navy, and reserve forces," Mr JONAH SAGE then proposed the health of "The Guest of the Evening" (Mr Llewelyn), and in the course of an interesting speech observed that though Mr Llewelyn had not been long at Risca, he was held in the highest esteem by the workman generally, the majority of whom would always remember his kindness and courtesy. When the news of his departure reached them it was decided, spontaneously and unanimously, that the occasion should not be allowed to pass without an acknowledgment from them. The movement w..s set on foot prior to that disastrous event which they should never be able to forget, and notwithstanding the sorrowful effects which followed, the workmen cheerfully subscribed to. wards the testimonial which they were now pre- would reach their destination in safety, *and~fliat they would enjoy a long and felicitous life. (Ap- plause.) Air JAMES MILES then read the address, which was presented by Air CHARLES JONES, one of the oldest workmen. He stated that he had been em- ployed at the llisca Colliery 53 years, and had never been discharged. He had the highest respect for Mr Llewelyn, and had tbegreatest pos- sible pleasure in asking him, on behalf of the workmen, to accept the address. Mr STEPHEN CIIOOK, also an old workman, pre- sented the salver to Mrs Llewelyn, adding a tew suitable words, and Mr WILLIAM AIOSELEY, another old workman, afterwards Landed over the children's tankards, accompanying the presentation by some appro- priate remarks. Air LLEWELYN, on rising to respond, was very warmly received. He stated that his task was anything but an easy or altogether pleasant one. 'I'he worJs of Air Sage and those of the address were far beyond whet he felt he deserved, address were far beyond whet he felt he deserved, but he was glad that during his short stay at Risca he had made so many friends, and he would uot soon forget ke kindness which 1 rompted them to present him with the beautiful articles before him. He hoped to be able to return at the end of about three years, and in humorous terms he slated that he then hoped to find the Risca roads lighted with gas, and a public hall erected there, as Iyeli as other desirable improvements etiecteu. He concluded by cordially thanking them, on Lis own and Mrs Llewelyn's and the children's be. half, for their cordial good wishes towards him- self auc. his family, aud resumed his seat amidst general applause. Dr. ROBOTHAN thought the presents conveyed the feelings of all present towards Mr Llewelyn and his family. The Vic A a proposed the health of "The Lonuon and South Wales Coal Company" (nroprietois of the Risca Colliery) and referred to thegellerosity which had characterised their proprietorship since it had been established at Risca, He believed they deserved and possessed the sympathy of all the Risca people in the great calamity which they bad recently sustained, and the heartiest thanks of them all for the handsome and liberal manner in which t ey had acted towards the relatives o. these who had perished in the late disaster, and towards the workmen since engaged in the explor- in operatiolJs. j Mr G. W. WILKINSON, the newly- appointed general manager, responded on behalf ot the company.. -r,. Air \V. THOMAS (Cardiff) proposed The Risca Colliety Officials," to which Mr James Mnes and Messrs Wilkinsou and Evans resioiided. Mr E. A. TAYLOR proposed "The Risca Colliery Workmen," to which Mr Allsopp responded. Mr D. W. James resnonded to the tonst ot The Tradesmen." Mr Tanner proposed the health of The Visitors," and Mr W. Thomas (Cardiff) responded in appropriate terms. The toast of "The Ladies," The Host," and "The Chair- man were given and responded to, and the meeting shortly afterwards broke up. Mr 1, TIailton ably accompanied the songs of Messrs Banks, Kingston, Hill, Pritchard, and Dunaheen on the pianoforte, and Air AI. Walton joined in a duett with the violin. We may mention that the value of the presents was about £ 40, Air Llewelyn value of the presents was about £40. Mr Llewelyn sails for Chili on Wednesday next, the 22nd inst. During the meeting Mrs Llewelyn, Mrs Wilkin- son, junr., and Mrs Widowfield came into the room for a short time aud met with a hearty reception,
CRICKET.
CRICKET. AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN v. GENTLEMEN OF SCOTLAND. On Friday, in the presence of a lame company, this match was resumed at Edinburgh. The Australians, who had to go in against a total of 143, succeeded in getting within one of the num. ber. Craig, a slow round arm bowler, proved very successful, and took six Australian wickets at a cost of 60 runs. Jarvis headed the score with 31, and Groube, Bonner, and Boyle rendered useful assistance. When the Scotch team went in a second time they made a poor start, losing four of their best wickets for 23 runs only. Then A. G. Steel and A. L. Wood got together, and, by pfcicky and spirited cricket, put on no fewer than 82 runs. Wood's 35 was not made in good style, but he gave the Cambridge captain very good assistance. 'From the following score it will be seen that Scotland is now 107 runs to the good, with five wickets to fall. The following is the score of the day's pLy :— AUSTRALIANS. First Innings. J MUSIC AND THE EISTEDDFOD…
MUSIC AND THE EISTEDDFOD IN WALES. To the Editor of the SOUTH WALES DAILY NEWS. Sin,—The eisteddfod movement has been under- going a severe criticism, and its influence pronounced to be demoralising. Coming from such distinguished and intelligent Welshmen as Mr Nathaniel Thomas and Mr Davies the charge is likely to cause some commotion amongst the eisteddfod manipulators in genera!. It is amusing to read the correspondence upon the subject in the South Wales Daily News. Of course every educated musical man knows that the eisteddfodau move- ment on this side of Wales, far from advancing, has done little else than impede the course of true musical art. And this is no bare assertion. The Welshmen who have really distinguished themselves in music—and their names may be soon summed up—have bad t'eir artistic training elsewhere, principally in the Metropolis. The eisteddfodau lias not helped them one iota, beyond giving them engagements ac concerts, iuJuondon art of all kinds finds its own level, with such musicians as Dr. Stainer, Dr. Alacfarren, Sir Julius Benedict, Berthold Tours, Arthur Sullivan, Sir Michael Costa, Sir F. Gore Ouseley, Frederic Cowen, Dr. Steggol, Mr TurJe, and I could fill a page with names of which Dr. Parry, at this moment, is the only lepresentatiye of the Principality with anything like the ability of any one of them. If the eis. teddfodau has done so much to cultivate music in Wales as is. contended for by some, it may be asked where are the results ? Unless it can be shown that the musical art is in a higher state of culti- vation herein the Principality, where tie have eisteddfodau, than in other countries where there is no such national institution, then either one of two conclusions must follow—that Wales is not a musical country, or eisteddfod, so far as promot- ine art, is a delusion. There is no question that. had it not been for Mr Wybart Beale inaugurate ing the Crystal Palace competition, and thus in- ducing in the Principdity a study into the works of Bach, Alendelssohn, and other g;eat men of the German School, the probability is that even now we should not have advanced be- yond the common national airs, which every country has, and the very ordinary part-writing ot OwenlAlaw, Ambrose Lloyd, and men of that class; for these inferior works were the only prizes put forth for chorus work at the eisteddfodau, and so it WM, as everyone knows, whether they will rdmit it or no, the Crystal Palace competition movement that set our young Welsh vocalists at work in the right direction. The eis:edifodau h d been, and lias since bee!), keeping them back, because, lacking good models in Welsh, they per- sisted in perpetuating inferior on-g,-moiels that it would not be improper to say, were more cal- culated to vitiate than improve the national in 8ic'd taste. • It is a burlesque upon the art to talk about eisteddforiau advancing it, by the prizes one reads in the ordinary programme one meets witl). VVhat eisteddfod m might do, and what it does, are two distinct ifciuo^ Again it might be asked. what has advanced art in Italy ? And one wonders how Germany, that great seat of musical learning, could have attained such excellence without eisteddfodic influence. And >>uu more, how it could possibly have pro. duced a Mendehwohn, a Bach, Handel, Beeth- oven, a Aloza t, Weber, Sp dir, Listz, Schuman, and a liost of other! while as yet we have in Wales no such talent ? Is it not the nationality. moBgers who are retarding the progress of not only music, but all art in general, by at eisteddfodau crying out Welsh-We.Ish-We-isb, lus.esw of progress—progress—progress. Bnt there is hope. The other day I lJlet a gentleman in the publishing v ay. He said, "Two or three years ago 1 was foolish enough to invest in a stock of Welsh Bibles the stock cost me over £ 400. 1 J1 Ve 1 1X16 upstairs there is no sale. The old people have their Bibles, and the young won't learn to read them. At any rate, there is little or no sale for Welsh Bibles, and my stock is so far a dead one on Jnv hands, and mv £ 400 is buried." —I am, &o., A PROFESSOR OF A1USIC.

It is a well-known fact that nearly all the diseases t* which the human frame is subject aie caused by a dis- ordered state of tho stomach, When the stomach is dis- ordered the whole of the digestive and nutritive orcans are unable to perform their proper functions; hence the By stem is not properly nourished, and the body is so weakened and the nervous power is so much diminished •hat the system is predisposed to succumb to fevers, diirrhcea, cholera, colds, rheumatism, and, in fact, to every complaint that is prevalent, all of which may be prevented by paying timely attention to the stomach, hence it is absolutely necessary to keep the stomach in a healthy state. The following are the symptoms of a disotdered sto. tnach: weakness, headache, nervousness, indigestion, pain in the stomach, los3 of appetite, shortness of breath, pain between the shoulders, bab-d reati), wind on the stomach, dreaming and resilens nights, costiveness, belching, sickness, pam in the side, fnlness after meals, coated tongue, sour taste in the mouth, diarrhoea, kc. All thtsa symptoms may be removed by taking a few dojes of Holden's Stomach Mixture, which is one of the most useful remedies ever introduced. It is impossible to suffer from any of the above symp» toms, if the stomach is in a healthy condition. Ker, Dispensary and Surgery, York-street, Ardwick.-Sir,-Allow me to express my sincere thanks for the great benefit I have derived from taldng" Holden's Stomach Mixture." It is an unfailing remedy for the prevention and cure of cholera and diarrheaa. At this time of the vear I am frequently troubled with bowel complaints and windy spasms with lowness of spirits, when 1 or 2 doses of the Stomach Mixture acts like a charm and I have found it very effectual and desirable to take at any time in summer or winter. It is really impossible to appreci- ate it too much. I am going from home for a week or so, will you please send me another bottle to take with me in case I may requiro it when I am tway. With many thanks for past kind attention—I remain, very truly yours, GEORG. SMITH. Mr Thomas Brings, joiner, Barnoldswick, near Leeda, says:—My wife was cured of indigestion and much pain in the chest by taking a single bottle of your Stomach Mixture," after suffering from it for upwards of seven years, and having tried numerous remedies and been under various medical men, without obtaining relief.
