T. O. HASSELL, 17,171] Managing Director. [ADVERTISEMENT. ] THE CONSERVATIVE ASSOCIATION AND MR. VADE KESTERTON. (To the Editor of the Monmouthshire Merlin.) DEAR SIR,-Understanding that most unfounded remarks are circulated with reference to my resigna- tion of the Hon. Secretaryship of the Newport Con- servative Association, I feel bound, in justice to myself, to ask you to find room for the following statements. Regretting that I have been compelled to take this course, I am, dear Sir, yours faithfully, VADE KESTERTON. Newport, Mon., 8th. February, 1872. Statement made by Mr. Vade Kesterton, on his resigning the Honorary Secretaryship of the Newport Conser- vative Association, at a meeting of the Committee held at Savings Bank Chambers, on Saturday, 27th January, 1872. The Honourable Godfrey C. Morgan, If. P., in the chair. SIR,-Having tendered my resignation as one of the Honorary Secretaries of this Institution, perhaps you will allow me to make a few observations with reference to the cause which has induced me to take that step, and to enumerate briefly what I have done for the Association. I was elected an Honorary Secretary, during my absence from Newport, in conjunction with Messrs. Wade and Evans, in September, 1868. As is well known, I took an active part in Mr. Hom- fray's election and had all the districts turned out as well as the one with which I was connected, the result of that election would have been different. I also took an active part in getting up the Banquet and Testimonial to Mr. Samuel Homfray. On the 16th August, 1869, as you may remember, Sir, a discussion took place as to the advisability of holding a Conservative Gathering on the occasion of the opening of the Reading Rooms, and a division took place and it is remarkable that the gentlemen who then vainly opposed the proposition which proved such a brilliant success, have ever since exhibited a lukewarmness in the cause, and hostility to me. I don't think it will be denied that the credit of the 1870 Demonstration, and that of 1871, was due to the exertions of Mr. Ingram and myself. I have never shrunk from incurring the odium of our opponents for the sake of the Conservative Cause, and I have for the last three years signed the list of Objections, which the Registration Agents declined to do. We now come, Gentlemen, to the School Board Election. The marked success on that occasion which astounded our opponents has been attributed to my exertions, and one of the leading Liberals has stated that I ought to have had a present of e.52 10s. for my exertions on that occasion, instead of which I have not received one penny. With a view of saving the Association expense I have, during the past year, assisted in the Registration, and thereby saved about £60, and I hare also saved the Asso- ciation a further sum of X25 by having a lad in the office instead of a clerk, and being there every morning before going to Mr. Colborne's, and supervising the work my. self. A nd why, Gentlemen, is the financial position of the Association unsatisfactory P Because while I have made every sacrifice in my power for the sake of the Conserva- tive Cause, those gentlemen to whom I shall have to allude (with one or two exceptions) do not even pay their subscriptions. I venture to think that had it not been for my energy (1,111 v> 11 u 111 11>» L l. v. Gcwixiga Danlc Chambers. As it was, I had to golto London at an hour's notice for the purpose of seeing Major Morgan, as Mr. H. J Davis had only given one day in which to decide. With reference to the financial position of the Asso ciation, at the last meeting I asked the Committee to sanction the publication of the accounts of the Associa- tion and in the name of justice I appeal to you, gentle- men, to insist upon their being published, as my opponents not only show a hostile feeling towards me, but have been cowards enough to malign me most grossly with reference to the appropriation of the funds of the Association. Gentlemen, then, having contributed to the success of two Conservative Demonstrations-having led the Conser- vative party to victory on the occasion of the School Board contest-having taken a prominent part in six municipal victories-having chiefly contributed to the satisfactory position in which the Association now stands —having made great personal sacrifices for the sake of the Association—having saved the Association X85 during the last year—I think, gentlemen, I am entitled to the confi- dence of every member of this Association—instead of which, gentlemen, the same section which in August 1869 opposed the proposition for a Demonstration has always shown a spirit of hostility towards me which I believe to be unparalleled for ingratitude and, therefore, in the hope that you may get some one to fulfil my position to the entire satisfaction of the Association I have tendered my resignation. As you are aware, in the course of a few weeks you will have to fight the battle of the School Board over again. In the course of a few months you will have a Parliamentary contest; and before the end of the year you will have a severe Municipal struggle, in all of which I hope the Association will be successful. In withdrawing from the Association I feel conscious that I have been loyal to my party, and that I have made great sacrifices for its sake but fully alive to the fact that there exists in this Association a party who have wilfully decline J to recognise my exertions; and who preier to jeopardise the success of the Association to per- sonal pique. In conclusion, I have to thank you, Sir, for the great kindness I have always experienced at your hands, and I beg to tender my best thanks to those many members of the Association who have been pleased to express their appreciation of my services. In justice tJ myself I reserve the right of publishing this statement or any portion of it. NEWPORT CONSERVATIVE ASSOCIATION. Statement of Receipts and Disbursements for 1871 DR. £ s. d.
