NATURE'S PERFECT REMEDY FOR ALL KINDS OF WORMS. w ILLIA'.NI'S (PONTARDAWE WORM VV LOZENGES. There is no disease incidental to the human system that has so baffled the skill of the physician as the cure and removal of worms. The symptoms arising from the presence of these pests are so varied, and the old nauseous remedies still in use of purging with powders of calomel, jalap, scammony, &c., are quite inadequate for their cure, and thus the patient, after many yeas of treatment, often dies a lingering death, having been treated by the medical attendant for diseases from which he or she never suffered. It was this known fact, combined with the knowledge that nine out of every ten persone suffer from worms of some kind, caused the late Jenkin Williams to make research in the vegetable kingdom for a remedy that may be taken by the weakest child or the strongest man, and which would destroy every species of worms detrimental to the human system without in any way inj uring the weakest constitution. After several years of study and experiments, which broke down his health, lie was enabled to discover that much coveted prize, and so formed it into Lozenges that they become quite a palatable medicine, so that the youngest child will take them easily and their miraculous expulsion of worms, although not a purgative, is almost incred- ible, as millions of all ages have testified by the nu- merous testimonials, daily coming to hand. Prepared from the original receipt by J. Davies, chemist, Swan- sea, and sold by most chemists at 9 £ d., 13id., and 2s. 9d. per box. Protected by the Government stamp, en which are engraved" Williams's Worm Lozenges. ONE DESTROYING THIRTY-FOUR. Penrhewl, nearLoughor, September7th, 1873. Sir,—A very extraordinary thing has occurred at oui house. My little girl passed thirty-four large worms after eating a single lozenge out of a box of Williams's Pontardawe Worm Lozenges. I would not have believed it, had I not seen it with my own eyes. I have always found them much better than any pow- ders or lozenges I can get for mv children. Yours obedieiltlv, MARY WILLIAMS. TO Mr j. uavies. Any of the following symptoms indicate worms:— Variable appetite, fieted breath, acid eructation, pains in the stomach and head, grinding of teeth during sleep, picking of the nose, paleness of the counten- ance, hardness and fullness of the belly, slimy stool, with occasional griping pains, more particularly about the naval, short dry cough, and emaciation of the body, often mistaken for decline, slow fever, and irregular pulse, sometimes convulsive fits-often causing sudden death, and heat and itching about the anus, which often causes them to be mistaken for piles. CAUTION.—None are Genuinel unless they bear the (Inventor's Signature on the Wrapper around each box Jk. WILLIAMS. And the words Williams' Worm Lozenges" on the Government stamp. I IRON. MIDDUSSBOROUGH, Tuesday.—The iron market to-day was decidedly firmer, and prices of pig iron were at least Is per ton better than last week, 59s and 603 being quoted for No. 3, and 583 6d nett being generally realised. Forge iron is in improved demand, owing to the more active employment of the mills and forges, and it is im- possible to buy at last week's figures, 56s net being the lowest for No. 4. Makers are well sold for a menth or two ahead, and, in the pre- # «» • seat uncertain state 01 anairs, are not eager to accept orders for forward delivery. Finished iron is in better request. Several rail orders have been sent by Welsh houses into the district for execution f,7, less 2! per cent., is accepted for heavy rails. WOLVERHAMPTON, Wednesday.—New orders were scarcer than last Wednesday, and prices generally weaker for all but first class iron, Welsh bars firm at JE8 15s, a rise of 10s to 15s since the lockout began. A drop is announced in bolts and nuts of 2s to 4s per cwt., and rivets of Is 6d to Zs. Li-ht iron washers are reduced lt per cent. Limestone is scarce and dear. Manufacturing coal abundant at easy prices.
THE COAL TRADE.
THE COAL TRADE. THE ALLTAMI COLLIERY.—A meeting of this company was held at the offices on Thursday week, Dr. Butt in the chair. The Secretaiy (Mr E. J. Bartlett) read the notice convening the meeting, and also the resolutions adopted at the extraordinary general meeting held on the 27th day of January last. The Chairman in moving that the special resolutions be conficmed, stated that satisfactory information had been received since they had last met regarding the coal at see- tion B, and the operations at the works were pro- ceeding most satisfactorily. The resolutions having been put to the meeting, it was unasi- mously resolved that they be, and are hereby, duly confirmed. A vote of thanks to the chair- man terminated the proceedings. THE SOUTH WALES STRIKE.—Lord Aberdare explains in a correspondeace with Mr Halliday the reasons which induce him to decline the re- quest of the South Wales miners to endeavour to secure a modification of the masters' terms. Without approving the conduct of the masters, his lordship thinks tnat it is to the men to whom the language of expostulation should be addressed, and he would not hesitate to advise them to give way if he had an opportanity of doing so. As- suming that there is a superfluity of labour, Lord Aberdare says the masters have the same right to avail themselves of it as the men would have to ask increased wages if the labour market were under, instead of over, supplied. About a dozen delegates, chosen at a delegate meeting held at Aberdare, left on Monday for various parts of Eng- land, under the direction of Mr W. A. Bailey, chairman of the Parliamentary Committee of the Trades Congress, to collect subscriptions from the various trades unions in the Uuited Kingdom, for the support of the men locked out. They are furnished with credentials from the Merthyr and Dowlais Trades Council, who strongly support the men, and characterise the conduct of the masters as tyrannically unj ust in refusing peace- ful negotiations, and locking out those at work on the reduction. There seems no signs of a settle- ment.
THE MOLD ARGOED COLLIERY.…
THE MOLD ARGOED COLLIERY. I Tho third annual general meeting of this com- pany was held at the offices, 8, Queen Victoria- street, E.C., on Tuesday week-Mr F. Bennoch in the chair. The Secretary read the notice convening the meeting and the report was taken as read. The Chairman in the course of his remarks said: There is one matter to which I will at once call your attention, and that is the expendi- ture of last year being greater than we antici- pated it would be. That as arisen solely and entirely from the wages having increased from 33 to 37 t per cent. In addition to that we have had to purchase a considerable number of wag- gons. Another point of importance is that as our production increases a larger amount of capi- tal is requisite for carrying on the business but inasmuch as our fixed charges remain the same, the increase in the productive powers of the col- liery brings a larger increase in the revenue. The cost of wages, salaries, directors, and all other expenses relating to the colliery becomes less in proportion as we are making a greater propor- tionate output. What we have now to bear, say 7i per cent., may, as we extend our works, be- come not more than 3 or 4 per cent. But in all new undertakings, the first expense is always larger in proportion to what it is when the com- pany becomes established. We had last year, and we retained until very recently, a certain number of our shares in reserve, which we did for the purpose and with a view of having some at our disposal in the event of any of our men em- ployed at the works being disposed by their thrift to save money, and so become shareholders in the concern in which they were working; but as they did not seem to be disposed to save their money in that manner, but rather to spend it in liquor and such extravagances, we thought it well, as we required more capital, to dispose of those shares. There was not the slightest diffi- culty in doing so, inasmuch as I have had for some time in my possession applications for shares, and I at once let one of my friends have them. After our meeting of last year we had some difficulty in regard to our men. They be- came timid and afraid in their working as they were approaching some old working, in which it had been declared that some 30or40 men lost their lives some yeais ago. The men were afraid that a similar fate might await them, because there was an immense body of water, aud it required to be tapped with the greatest possible care. The effect of this timidily was that for three or months in the beginning of last year the outpu', instead of increasing, gradually diminished, until they came down to 61) or 70 tons a day. In that way we lost three or four months, and all the expenses of the company were, of course, precisely the same as if we were raising four times that amonat. However, the water was carefully and sucet-sif ully tapped, and drawn off. and pumped out, and thereupon the men took heart again, and the works went on merrily, and within three weeks of that time the production had risen to 112 and 120 tons per day but that thing alone cost us four months of very anxious work, leaving us very little profh beyond the cost. Then came a second period, when there was scch a public tnrmoil existing in regard to the price of coal. Then, again, the important question as to whether we should continue the same rate of wages we were tben paying had to be considered. We had never disturbed our men in regard to their wages, because while developing our colliery, and libonr being in great demand, we did not think it was well or advisable to moot the question of a re- duction of wages until we felt sure that public opinion and the general condition of the labour market in the neighbourhood would enable us successfully to make the application. We gave no iceth><t after a certain day the wages would be reduced 10 per cent. The men, of course, did not like it, but inasmuch as we had raised the wages nearly 40 percent., we thought that a 10 per cast reduction would be reasonable. We gave the notice, which was duly communicated to the men, ani they demurred at first, but offered to take a 5 per cent. reduction, to which he would not agree, so they struck, and the result was that they remained for several weeks out of work. After some time we gave them a week's notice that if they did not come in by a certain day the deduction made would be 15 per cent., and if they were not in by ten days after that, a farther de- duction would be made of 5 per cent., making 20 per cent altogether. The communication had the desired effect, and the men came in at the 10 per cent. redaction. Going through the accounts, there is another point which occurred to me and the board, that, by comparing the number of men who were the winners of the coal with the num- ber of men who were really employed only in I ordinary labour, our proportion of the latter was larger than necessary aud upon carefully going over the list, we insisted upon a reduction in the labour to the extent of 10 per cent., and that re- duction in the amount of labour was made on the distinct understanding that it should not in any way interfere with the oufpnt of coal. The result was that we diminished the expense and kept. the output the same. This was rather A difficnlt matter, because in the devoloping of a new properly there is a great deal to do and managers do not liki to dismiss man who have been engaged for a long time, but it was at last accomplished. I should add that not only did we do all this, but what is, perhaps, quite aniqae in the history of any company, and that ii, thav. the 10 per cent. reduction which we made ap- plied not only to the colliers and labourers, bat applied also to the secretary, and to the director4 themselves—in fact, everyone receiving re maeration was reduced 10 per cent. The result of all this has been, that we are able now to de- clare a profit of 7} per cent., derived from about five months' working; indeed, if I were to say four months, I should be nearer the mark. It is very hopefal to us in the future, because at the present time we are gradaal y and continu- ously increasing our output. When we know we have on our books contracts that will last until the beginning of May, at the present rata of wages, we feel pretty confident as to the re- sult-indeed I believe that before the end of June we shall have realised profit enough to enable as to declare a dividend in the course oi the summer, as weu as our annual dividend at the end of the year. Last year there was a strong expression in favour of our building cottages for the sake of keeping near us some of our best men. Twenty-six cottages were then designed, and it is in contem- plation to build them all. But six of those cottages have been built and let to several of oar best men, who applied for them, and we are mak- ing 10 to 12 per cent. upon the outlay. That is one of the reasons we have in asking you for more capital. You will observe that we ask for a certain amount of debentures to be issued for such a number of years as shall be decided upoa. I hope that the shareholders will all be satisfied with the dividend they have got, and I think they have every reason to be so, seeing that it is the result of the legitimate working of our property. Patting all accidents, over which we caunot havs the slightest control, aside, I think that in the course of two years we shall be able to say to the shareholders, we are in this position We offer you a dividend of 6 per cent. per annum, and wa propose to give yoa, say another 4 per cent, in the shape of a bonus, by means of which you will be gradually redeeming your capital. If we pay yoa 20 per cent. you will be having a fair dividend. of say 6 per cent., and then a bonus of 14 per cent., which will go towards the redemption of your capital. The output of 1873 was 14.00Q tons, and now we are winning coal at the rate of 45,000 tons to 50,000 per annum and we have great cause, I think, to congratulate ourselves that that increase in the output has not been attended by any increase in the general working expenses. There is one other point which has proved of great interest to us, and which I had nearly forgotten to mention. Wo were invited about a month ago to join the other coalowners in North Wales to form a combination, and insist upon a farther reduc- tion of wages. This engaged our serious atten- tion, as, of course, it has got two sides to it, like every other question, and required to be very carefully considered by us. For the present we have vol. joined the combination, nor have we thought it advisable to do so. We have rather encouraged our men, and if they only abstain front drunkeness and dissipation after the pay-day, and instead of working for ten days a fortnight give us eleven days, and have one day's holiday, we shall be satisfied. We are prepared to allow things to remain as regards wages, if they will only give us one more day's work a fortnight whiel1 they can easily do. This will make a differ- ence of 180 tons of coal per fortnight, and it would, of course, not only greatly benefit us but the workmen themselves. If we find that the men will not do this, we shall have no other al- ternative than:to join the combination, but we are anxious not to take this nnal step, because it we do we shall not be able to take advantage of any changes in the rate of wages which might be ob- tainable in our own district. We are, therefore. endeavouring, by looking after the welfare of our own men, to induce them to work well for us. I beg to move: That the directors' report and state- ment of accounts be received and adopted, and that the dividend of n per cent. be declared pay- able on the 15th March." Mr Walcot, C.M.G., seconded the motion. Mr Williams thought that it was not necessary to raise any money for the issue of debentures. He pointed out that the ct mpany was now work- ing at a profit every day, and that that profit ought to be employed in the development of the works required to be made. He had been watching the progress of the colliery, and was very much pleased with it. He mentioned that he had been connected with the company for a considerable time, and that the only return he had got for his outlay had been got at the hands of the present company. This gave rise to a very long discussion, after which, the report wllsadoptfd-Te retiring direc- tor Mr Powell, was re-elected. The meeting was then made extraordinary, and the following resolutions were agreed to-" That power be given to the directors by the share- holders to declare interim dividends out of profits." And (2)—" That the quornm neces- sary far the transaction of the general business at any meeting, shall consist of seven share- holders present in person, exclusive of the directors. Colonel Ratcliff moved a vote of thanks to the chairman, which, having been carried, was briefly acknowledged by Mr Bennoch. The R JV. A. J. Bennoch then moved a vote of thanks to the managers at the colliery, to the secretary in London, and to all the employes of the company, for the admirable manner in which they carry on the business of the company. Mr Walcott, C.M.G., seconded the motion, which was put and carried. The Secretary: I return you my most sincere thanks for the honour you have done us, and for the cordial manner in which you have thought fit to express your appreciation of my labours, and of those who are associated with me in carrying on the work of the company. I thank you heartily both on their behalf and my own. I can only say I believe I am speaking the wishes and thoughts of my friends at the colliery, when I say that we shall all do our utmost to make the career of this company one of great and continual prosperity. (Cheers.) The proceedings then terminated.
I IAGRICULTURE.
I I AGRICULTURE. THE COBN TRADE-The Mark-Lane Exprest says—" The cold weather gave encouragement as to tho great benefit to newly thrashed samples, as well as the flooded lands, and for- warding of spring labour, but we must now bide our time. Still, we have reached so low a point that farmers at some markets seem thoroughly justified in shutting up their samples vet a few needy and downhearted, have yielded Is to the few buyers; but a review of the last averages, 21s 2d per quarter below 1874, seems to qay-it is enough—wait for better times; the 6974 quarters increased quantity does not make up for the price of last year. Witile we write, a despatch comes from Paris that flour has fallen If, being quoted 52f. or 33-* 41 per sack for the best marks, and town millers here have been making 43:i per sack. It is true the rate of best l wneat there is 44i against 50s here but the dif- ference, iu spite of freight and expanses, seems too great. French provinces, too, come in several placea rather lower for wheat."

THE DENBIGHSHIRE CONSOLIDATED LEAD MINES. A s pecial meeting of this company was held at the offices on Thursday week, for the purpose of confirming certain special resolutions passed at a previous meeting, Mr Francis Rudall, jnn., in the chair.-Mr E. J. Burtlett (the secre- tary) read the notice convening the meeting.— The Chairman It is now my duty to move that the following resolntions, which were passed on the 27th January, 1875, be, and are hereby, con- firmed-" That the capital of the company be in- creased by the creation of 2,500 additional shares of 93 each, the same to be issued and rateably off-red amongst the present holders of shares in the Denbighshire Consolidated Mines, Limited, as entered in the register of members. That the said 2,500 shares be issued at par, 13 per share, -abject to a payment of 10s per share, and no further call for six months." That upon ap- plication for 10 of such shares, a bouus of one fully paid 23 share be granted, but that all shareholders uot taking up their quota of the new shares on or before the 11th day of February next, do lose all right and title to the same, and that such shares be left in the hands of the directors for disposal."—The resolutions were tht-I) pot to the meeting and carried unanimously. -i*I í1. i I ne onatrman i may state that since our last meeting the secretary has received farther ap, plications for shares, and so far as thby have gone, they have been satisfactory; but as they have not all beea taken up, we propose to offer the balance to the pablic on the same terms as those on which they are offered to the shareholders. It will also be very satisfac- tory to you to know that the mine is going on well. 1 do not know that I need take up more of your time, because we weat so folly into all the questions connected with oar working at the last meeting.
