THE APPLE SUCKER.I
THE APPLE SUCKER. The Board of Agriculture lisw just issued a Irafle^ giving the life history of "The Amile Hucker, with euggestioM for prevention and remedies, which will be read with interest by apple growers, which have suffered from the ravages of an insect whose existence they nitty not previously have known or suspected. J lie larvae, which causes the mischief, axe so closely concealed in the buds that they may efM. y be w-,se(I over by Ciwual observers. The r" .r JT -jarvae may, however, lyo ¡¡(",n byoareoful indirection within the folds of the buds actively "ngaged in ducking up the juices and prevent- illg the development of leaves and blossom, Tho exhaustion of the juice and sap aaid the irritation set up by the larvae soon cau, decay, and prevent the fructification of the 1, larva. nat. size, la, Inrva after third moult, much magnified 2, perfect insect, nat, size. 24, much ..?-ifl.d: 2 I)crf?Det inuct, mt. size. 2a, much bloewom buds. The insect, which h801 rapidly increased in the past four or five years, is first 8wn about the seoond week in June. Pairing ?.k. ph- in September, and ej?gs are laid in some seasons up to November, remaining until the weather becomes spring-like, witcii the larvae emerge and invade the nearest buds. To eradicate the pt, in the Quae of the early sorts of apples, infested trees might be sproyetl with disagreeable washes of soft soap and quassia, or soft soap and paraffin, directly the apples are picked to prevent the psyllae from laving eggs upon the shoote. Some i small amount of prevention would ensue from pruning and spraying when the buds are open, and the Iw?- -p..d is also .wJ to be ?ffi- caoioos. —w————
IITHE PENYGRAIG WINDING I…
THE PENYGRAIG WINDING I ACCIDENT. RESUMED INQUEST. The res?ed inquest on the bodies of John w;; :W:iu'R:es::Îie Horton, and John Avery, who wore Id\led at the recent accident at the Naval Pits, Penygraig, took place (before Mr. J. T. Bhys, ooroner), at the Adare Inn, Tonypandy, on Thursday. Messrs. J. T. Rohson and J, D, Sims, inspectors of mines, were present. Mr. S. H. Stookwood, Bridgend, appeared for the company, whilst Mr. W. Evans, sub-agent, watched the proceedings on behalf of the Cam- brian Miners' Association. Inepoctor William Jone,,? Pentre, conducted the proc?dings on behalf of the police, being ably -si.t?d by P.lice-seria?,.t Hoyle, of 'renya?ndy, and Mr. D,R.Jones wm the foreman of the jury. There were also present Mr. J. W. Hodd, agent of the Naval Colliery, and Mr. '1', Sheppard, district manager of the Employers' LiabiFity Assurance Company (Limited). Considerable delay was oce?ioned at the outset owing to the absence of one of the jurymen, Mr. Henry Williams, iron. monger, Penygraig, failing to turn up? and wb,?n be did appe? half an hour late l was severely censured by the coroner. The first witness called was David Thomas, the mechanic of the pit, who explained how the rope was sent down the pit and how he found the cages in the middle of the pit after Isaac ..d Fosar had been rescued by the men in the bowk. The Coroner briefly summed ap the evidence. The jury retired, and, after an absence of abont an hour, brought in a verdict of Acci- dental death, mumd by an error in judgment of the night oveman, John Way, and added a :e'í\V:,e:,a¡:e:W:l;dd ::je::n rider, it is necessary te take a rope down the pit in future a neater weight should be need than the one u, on this oeemion, as we conrider the chain much too light; and also that a man be specially appointed to go down with the rope to see that it passes through every staple. We also recommend that better pro- vision be made at the pit top for rescuiDg any persons who might be in the shaft a7;r s?bgre:Y down in the ordinary machinery."
