M. Francis, youngest son of Dr. G. P. Francis, of Brecon, who belonged to the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars, a Mounted Territorial Regiment, has just joined the 4th Machine Gun Section of the 4th Calvary Brigade, British Expeditionary Force in France, anl nov:. belongs to the Regular Army. Tie has been in France since October 1914, and fighting in the trenches during the last two winters. Up to the present he has most fortunately escaped severe injury, but has had many very narrow escapes from shells, explosions of mines and bullets, and also had a taste of "gas." He njoys the best ?' cD I OYB the :best of health, and hopes before long to be able to ob- tain "leave" for a short visit home. IJNITFD 'JMVICE.-A largely attended service -under the auspices of the Free Churches of the town, was held at Glamorgan Street Chapel on Monday evening. Rev. R. G. Thomas of Ken- sington, who presided, in the course or a brief ad- dress on "Thankfulness," stated that in the midst of a national crisis they could as a Christian Church rejoice at grand responses made by the people in aid of the various Missionary Societies. The London Missionary Society anticipated a de- ficit of £ 25,000, but already they had a grand surplus. The Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society began the financial year with a deficit of £ 9,500, and ends with none. The Friends Mis- sionary Society, which began with a deficit of £ 3,000, had more than met its obligations, and the Baptist Missionary Society, with an expendi- ture of over £ 125,000, had a clean balance sheet. MHMTARY.—Captain E. J. Byrne (South Wales Borderers) is in casualty lists, issued during the week-end, reported as missing, and believed to be killed. The gallant officer has previously been 'reported wounded. Another South Wales Bor- derers officer. Captain Arthur J. Ellis, a member of the Brecon Golf Club, is reported wounded. At Knighton, where the family are well known, news has been received that the officer had a narrow escape from death. A shell reduced his dug-out to a mass of debris, in which he waa buried. One iiand, protruding from the debris, W88 noticed by the men, who promptly rescued the officer from j suffocation. Others in the list of wounded are Captain W. Bell, Second-Lieutenants P. T. Dale. E. W. E. Edwards, and Vaughan Jones, all of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and D. C. Parry-Dav- ies. South Wales Borderers. Loss TO THE GUARDIANS.—We regret to an- nounce the death, after a brief illness, on Sunday night, of Miss F. Down. Industrial Trainer at the Brecon Workhouse. The deceased lady. who had been engaged in this work for the past eight-j years, was a most popular official and greatly beloved by the children. From time to time her services have gained high econiums from the Board of Guardians, and her demise is deeply re- gretted. The late Miss Down, who was 50 years of age, was a native of Tavistock (Devon), whitlier, I the remains were conveyed on Wednesday for in- terment, the master and matron of the House, Mr and Mrs B. P. Thomas, attending the obse- quies. Deceased was a member of Lion Street Westevan Church, and at the Workhouse on Tuesday, a service was held, conducted by the Rev. C. A. Harries (pastor). There was a large attendance of Wesleyans and others. Mr J. R. Morgan was the undertaker, and a number of floral 'tributes were sent. DEATH OF MR W. DOWDESWELL.—We regret to record the death, which occurred on Tuesday, of Mr W. Dowdeswell, Free Street. Deceased had been ailing for some time, but his demise came as a shock to his large number of friends. The late Mr Dowdeswell. who was 61 years of age. was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Dowdeswell, formerly of the "King William." the Watton, and for some years lie and his family lived in Builth Wells, where he 'was engaged in the en- gineering department of the Cambrian Railways. For the past thirteen years he has been the hall- beeper under the Brecon Corporation, and per- formed his duties to the great satisfaction of the Council, as will be seen by the expressions of re- gret made at the Council's meeting on Tuesday. Deceased was a member of the Brecon Dodge of Buffaloes. Deep sympathy is extended to his widow and family in their 'bereavement. FUNERAL.—The funeral of Mr J. Bufton, Rhyd- bernard Terrace, whose death we recorded in last week's issue, took place at the Cemetery on Saturday. A short service at the house was con- ducted by Rev. T. Aneurin Davies, following which the cortege wended its way to the Priory Church, where a service was held, deceased hav- ing been a sidesman at the church. Rev". Aneurin Davies and E. E. Davies officiated at the service, and, also, at the graveside. There was a large attendance at the obsequies, including several of deceased's fellow employees from the Breconshire Coal and Lime Co., with Mr Jones (manager). The mourners were the widow and two sons. Mrs Steadman (sister). Mr and Mrs Davies, Ynysbwl (sister and brother-in-law), Mr and Mrs D. Bufton, Merthvr Cynog (brother and sister-in-law), Mr and Mrs T. Bufton. Dinas (brother and sister-in-law). Mr and Mrs William Bufton, Llanfaes (brother and sister-in-law). Mrs Owen, Llaadrindod (aunt), and Mr Fred Brown, Cardiff (nephew). There was a large number of floral tributes. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr J. Griffiths.

HIRWAIN. OBITTIARY.Last Thursday morning Hirwain- ites heard that during the night they had lost one of their most outstanding characters, viz., Mr J. M. Jones, undertaker. Mr Jones was a native of Tumble. Carmarthenshire, and came to Hirwain from Cardiff in 1875. He built the HiTwain Council School, and was an undertaker and personally conducted over 5.000 funerals. He was genial and human, and beloved by all. He had befriended the poor in need and trial. He was a deacon of Mount Pleasant Church, where he will be greatly missed. He was buried on Monday Penderyn Churchyard.

CEFN-COED. FUNERAL.—The remains of the late Sergt. D. Davies (Breconshire Constabulary), who was stationed here for some years, were laid to rest in the Cemetery on Friday. Rev. G. S. Rees (pastor of Ebenezer Welsh Congregational Church) offi- ciated, assisted by the Rev. 0. Williams (Brvn- mawr). There was a very large attendance of members of the Breconshire and Merthyr Police Force, including the acting-chief-constable for Breconshire (the Hon. C. Hore-Ruthven), Deputy- Chief-Con stable Hand, Supt. S. Jones (Brecon), Chief Inspeotor Phillips (Merthyr), Mr M. Phil- lips (magistrates' clerk for Penderyn), Vaynor Rural District councillors, Inspector Starr, N.S.P.C.C., Mr C. M. Davies (Mertlivr) and Dr. Llewellyn Jones.

CANTREF. TEA AND ENTERTAINMENT.—The annual tea, and concert was held at the Cantref Congregational Chapel on Easter Monday'. There was a goodly number present at the tea, and in the evening the entertainment was well patronised. Tea '=' was provided by the following ladies :—Mrs Williams, Pencaefadog; Mrs Steele, Abercynrig; Mrs Evans. Held: Mrs Vaughan, Mrs Williams. Trawsnant; Miss B. Davies and Miss Powell. An excellent programme was prepared for the evening by the secretary. Mr J. H. Williams. The accompan- ist was Master Bert Peck. The Mayor of Brecon ably discharged the duties of chairman. At the close of the concert a vote of thanks to the chair- man a-ijd all those who had so readily contributed towards the success of the day's proceedings was proposed by Mr J. H. PATRIOTIC.—The sons of Mr and Mrs Langford (formerly of the town), who went to Australia a few years ago, and took part in the Dardanelles struggle, have now arrived in France. Mr Frank Langford has received promotion. DEATH.The death occurred, at Rosebery House on Sunday, of Mr Wm. Meredith. De- ceased had reached the advanced age of 83 years. The funeral takes place at Cwmdauddwr Church- yard to-day (Thursday). The late Mr Meredith had been ill for a long period. TRIBUTE.—The late Miss Florence Morris, who acted as organist of St. Mary's Parish Church for 35 years, had a. tablet erected to her memory I in the parish church last week. On the brass-tab- let was inscribed. "To the glory of God and to the memory of Miss Florence Morris, faithful and de- voted organist of this church for 35 years." TRIBUNAL.—Colwyn Tribunal met on Monday, and was presided over by Mr H. Evan-Thomas. Others present were Messrs. T. Davies (Vron- olau), W. Prothero (Glannant), E. Davies (Wern- husman). T. L. Vaughan (Llandrindod Wells), | W. W. Lennard (clerk) and Capt. Aubrey Thomas (military representative). Mr J. L. Davies (Llwvnmadoc) attended 6n behalf of the farmers. Several cases were dealt with, and, in the major- ity, temporary exemptions were granted. WOMEN LABOUR.—A largely-attended open-air meeting, in connection with the women labour question, was held near the Assembly Rooms on Monday. Speakers were Mrs S. M. Bligh (Cil- merv Park), Miss Hilda Vaughan (Castle), Mrs B. Maitland Jones, Miss A. Garland (Board of Agriculture), Rev. Gordon Williams (Gwenddwr) and Mrs Herbert Lloyd. THE FAIR.—May pleasure fan here this time was a great disappointment. Practically no am- I usements arrived, and, even if they had, the ,wea- i ther was so rough that 'few would have visited i the pleasure grounds. Sweet stands were all that could be seen on the Groe. and racing motors, shooting galleries, side-shows, etc.. were con- spicuous by their absence. Farmers, however, could not grumble, for their stock made excellent prices. "EXPLOITS OF ELAINE."—The twenty-fourth episode of "The Exploits of Elaine," entitledi "Shadows of War," is being screened at the Kino this week. Wu Fang, in this episode, is ap- proached by secret agents, who commissioned him to secure, at any price, the model torpedo invented i by Craig Kennedy, and in the possession of the U.S. Government. Wu Fang sets his machinery in motion and awaits, results. Succeeding events are full of interest and sensations. JUMBLE SALE.—A successful jumble sale, organ- ised by Mrs J. Ward in aid of the hall funds, was held at Church Hall on Wednesday. There was a large assortment of articles, and buyers were numerous. The ladies, who assisted, were Mrs P. B. Abery, Mrs Edgar Price, Mrs A. V. Price, S in Iles, 'Miss Mau(Ii Mrs C. Whisliav, Mrs M. Smiles, Miss Maud Davies. Miss Prothero 'Market- istreet), Miss Agnes Price (Oriel Villa), Miss Bradley, Miss Handley. Miss James (Lansdowne), Miss Kitto (Brentwood) and Miss Maud Price. The tea was under the supervision of Mrs C. Whislav and Miss Prothero. Mr J. Ward and the Rev. D. Hughes Richards also rendered help. ANNUAL MEETING.—Dr. W. Black Jones, J.P., presided at the annual meeting of the Social Club on Thursday. Others present were Messrs. A. P. Morgan, Herbert Lloyd, J. G. Eadie, W. Smiles, Wallace Jones, C. A. Whislav, J. Mere- dith Jones, H. Bicknell and Sidney Thomas. Mr H. Vaughan Vaughan was elected president of the club for the ensiiin, of the club for the ensuing year. Vice-presidents were re-elected, the name of Dr. Black Jones tak- ing the place of Dr. Fry. Mr J. M. Jones was elected treasurer, and the balance-sheet for the past year had been audited by Messrs. J. M. Jones and P. Collier. A vote of sympathy with the family of their late president (Mr A. Gwynne Vaughan) was passed. The committee was re- elected and the name of Mr H. Bicknell added. Mr Herbert Lloyd offered to give two papers daily if ten new- members could be secured. Votes of thanks were accorded the officers of the club for the able way in which they had carried out their duties in the past. A vote of thanks was also accorded Dr. W. Black Jones for pre- siding. PRESENTATION.—A very pleasing function was performed on Saturday, when Miss C. Bennet Jones, B.A., the English and history mistress of the County Sclioo.1, was made the recipient of an expensive leather attacli4 case. Unfortunately, the case arrived too late for a public presentation to be made at the school, and, consequently, it was made privately by Miss Olive R. Bowyer, the senior girl. Miss Bennet Jones, in a letter of thanks to the pupils, expressed her gratitude for their kindness, the beautiful gift, and especially the kind thought which prompted it. Her associ- atIOn: with the pupils, for the past five years, had been of the pleasantest character, and the souvenir which she was taking away with her would always remind her of their kindness. She was very sorry not to be able to thank them per- sonally, and 'wished them all success, not only in their examinations, but, also, in the development of their best qualities. Miss Bennet Jones left to take up the post of history mistress in Cy- farth'fa Castle School (Merthyr).

LLANFILLO. I DIED IN FRANCE.—News has just come to hand of the death in France of Pte. Dd. Phillips, young- est son of Mr Sam Phillips, Top House, Lkn- filao. Mr and Mrs Phillips have three sons on active service, the eldeat is in Salonica, the second in India, and the youngest as above stated was with the S.W.B. in France. Very much sym- pathy is felit for the parents in their bereavement. Only recently we recorded the death in France of the only son of Mr Jones, Shop, Llanfillo. The death of young Phillips is the second death of a native of the village.

(Carmarthen) Miss Mary M. F. R. Thomas, of Bryngwn Rec- tory, successfully passed in the lower division. 'SALE OF WORK.—A successful sale of work, in connection with the Primitive Methodist Church, was held in the Wesleyan Schoolroom on Tuesday. Proceedings were opened by Mrs Watkins, Priory farm, Clifford. VESTRY.-ReV. J. J. de Winton (vicar) pre- sided at the annual vestry meeting. Mr C. E. Tunnard-Moore was nominated by the vicar as his warden, and Mr J. M. Maddy elected people's warden. Seven were granted total exemption, one temporary exemp- tion, and three cases were adjourned till the next meeting. The military representative withdrew one case of total exemption. TRIBUNAL.—Bredwardine Tribunal met on Thursday, when there were present Messrs. D. F. Powell (chairman), Rev. G. Leigh Spencer. H. Yorath, R. T. Breese, David Wall, D. A. Prosser, J. Harges't, T. Williams (military repre- sentative) and A. Howard (acting-clerk). The five appeals considered were those of Messrs. George Duggan (The Moor), R. E. Snead (Middle- wood), Chas. E. Haddocks (Dorstone), H. W. Lane (Cusop) and R. Smith (Cowper Hall). The first four were refused and the last adjourned. An application 'by the military authority for the withdrawal of the exemption certificate of Mr Thomas Amos (Bredwardine) was granted.

CRUELTY.—At the police court here, on Thurs- day, James Edwards, formerly a. servant man in the employ of John Clement, Llwynjack, was charged with cruelly ill-treating a mare on the I 30th March. George Thorne and Albert Pater- son, two youths, fellow-servants of defendant, said they saw him beat the mare with a stick, and, also, with a. five-pronged fork. The chairman said they looked on what defendant had done as very cruel, and he would be fined 50/- inclusive. RURAL COUNCIL.—At the annual meeting of the Rural District Council, Mr Isaac Williams (Llan- dre) was elected chairman, and Mr Thomas Jones (Penrhyn, Cilycwm), vice-chairman. Mr Wm. Morris (Caerhyn. Llangadock) was appointed member for Llangadock in place of Mr E. P. Lloyd (deceased). Mr David Jones, Accheth (Llanddeusant), was elected on- the Tribunal to succeed Mr Pryce Hice (resigned). Mr Morgan (Blaenllanant) was appointed a member of the Assessment Committee. A 'HOPELESS CASE.—Edith Evans, of Llanelly, applied to Judge Morgan at Llandovery Court, on Friday, for compensation. She said she had been for nine months head-housemaid with Mrs Grace Campbell at Neuaddfawr. About a fortnight be- fore leaving, when lifting a washstand, she felt a sudden paid in her side, and had not been well since. Medical testimony was to the effect that plaintiff was suffering from hernia, and the Judge, who characterised the case as a hopeless one, gave judgment for respondent with costs.

MEASLES.—Yniscedwyn school has been re- opened, the epidemic of measles having abated. The trouble has now spread to the upper reaches of the valley, and the schools at Caehopkin and Aberorave have had -to be closed, owing to the large number of cases in the district. DRAMATIC.—Gurnos Dramatic Society repeated their previous success in the performance of "Mcahan Mawr I" at the New Cinema on Wed- nesday. There was a crowded house. ORDAINRD.-Rev. E. Vaughan was ordained to the charge of the English Congregational Church here on Thursday. FUNERAL.—The funeral took place at the parish church, on Wednesday, of the two-year-old child of Pte. Thos. Pitchford said that about 8.50 p.m., on the date in question, he was on duty in East Street and saw Lewis riding a bicycle without a light. Witness asked him why he had no light and defendant pleaded ignorance. Ho was advised to get one, and was told he would be reported. This was his first offence, and a fine of 2/6, inclusive, was imposed. Miss E. MOIRGA-Tlie funeral of the late Miss E. Morgan, of Tycanol, took place on Wednesday. To show their sympathy with Mr J. Morgan and Miss Morgan, the remaining brother and sister. a large number of friends and relatives assembled at the house, where the Re. D. Maldwyn Jones officiated. The chief mourners were Miss Mor- gan (sister), Mr Morgan (brother), and Mr and Mrs Price (sister and brother-in-law). The inter- ment took place at Cwmdauddwr Churchyard. when the Rev. W. LOWER CHAPEL. .LECTURE.— A irip to Belgium" was the sub- ject of an interesting lecture delivered at Bethesda C.M. Church a short- time ago. The lecturer, Mr Brychan M. Powell, Ystalyfera, gave a graphic description of some of the most noted towns and scenes and characteristics of the inhabitants of Belgium, giving now and again an amusing anecdote relating to his experiences by travelling from place to place. Mr Powell kindly gave his services free, in memory of his father, who was a native of Lower Chapel, and cherished many happy recollections of the neighbourhood. The chair was taken by the Rev. O. J. Davies. Votes of thanks were accorded the lecturer and chair- man, and carried with acclamation. The pro- ceeds were in aid of the Sunday school fund.

MOTeR AcCIDE.NT.-On Monday morning as Mr and 'Mrs James, Swansea, were motor cycling with a side-car attached, from Swansea to Llan- wrtyd, and had reached a dangerous turn known as the Llawdre Bridge, the side-car struck the hedge bank, fct^mtely with a sliding movement, by which means the force of the impact wa's con- siderably modified. Nevertheless, Mr and Mrs James were thrown on to the hedge. Happily both escaped serious injury. The motor cycle was completely smashed. TRIBUNAL.—Mr J. T. Evans, J.P., presided at the last meeting of the Tribunal here. Results cases were :-John Andy Davies, adjourned: Rees Evan Davies and Henry Idris Davies, adjourned; Evan Price (blacksmith), and Isaac Thomas, Es- gairmoel, not varied; Thomas John Jones, Dinas Shop, conditional certificate varied and temporary exemption granted until the end of September. The adjourned application of David Rees Row- lands. Tanycoed, Llanwrtyd, was considered. Ap- plicant said he was remaining home to support his mother, who was old and infirm. He had a brother serving. In reply to the chairman he said he did not think his mother could afford to keep a servant girl. The application was refused. Mr Roderick Jones, Dinas Farm, applied for renewal of certificate, on behalf of David Rees Rowlands, and David Morgans, Henbant. Mr Jones stated he held a contract under the Nortbamman Collier- ies Ltd. for the felling and -hauling of timber and Rowlands and Morgans were employed in cutting pitwood. The application was declined.

NANTMEL. PROMOTION.—Pte. S. W. Jones, Gaufron Villa, and Pte. John Bowen, Hifron Cottage, of the 1/lst Herefords, have been promoted to Lance.- Corpls. Pte. Jones has been selected to undergo a five weeks' course of musketry training at Altoar Musketry School, near Liverpool. PRESENTATION.—Mr W. Jones, Esgair-rhiw, was presented with a marble clock and purse of gold on his departure from the neighbourhood, subscribed by the members of the Church and friends from the surrounding district, on the 29th ult., at Nantglas Baptist Chapel. Mr Wozencroft presided. Speeches were delivered by Rev. 0. Thomas (pastor) and Mr W. Jones. The presen- \1 7 Tones. The presen- tation was made by Mrs Miles. Mr D. Price (Dolau Cottage) conducted the singing. Mr Jones had been of the utmost assistance and had shown marked ability and much devotion to the little cause, and his departure is naturally a source of general regret, and we all hope he will be spared to continue in the good work.

PENYBONT. VISITORS.—The Right Rev., the Lord Bishop of Lichfield, Mrs Kempthorne, Canon Jupp and Miss Jupp, have been staying at the Severn Arms Hotel. NATIONAL EGG COLLECTION.—During April, 2,471 eggs were sent from Penybont and district to the headquarters for the wounded soldiers and sailors. The different districts sent as follows :— Gwystre, 70: Penybont, 450; Llandegley, 392; Cefnllys, 185; Cantal, 256; Crossgates, 134; Llanfihangel, 161; Llandewy School, 389; Llan- bister School, 305; and Llandegley, 129. SOLDIER'S ACCIDENT.—Sergt. J. Arthur Jones, headmaster of Llanbadarn-fawr School, is home on sick leave. In course of experimental training and practice, Sergt. Jones had the misfortune to dis- locate his left shoulder, thus suffering a serious mishap and much excruciating pain. Sergt. Jones was one of the earliest men in the teaching pro- fession in the county to go on active service, re- joining his old regiment—the Herefords. Although beyond military age and most happy and success- ful in his work, Mr Jones felt it to be his duty to offer his services, which the Army Authorities found to be of much value in different directions. Well-deserved promotion has fallen to his lot.
