[ar 0t78 own IIKP08rKR.] One of the prettiest weddings which has taken piace this year was celebrated 00 Tuesday, at St. tfeorge's, Hanover-square, between Miss Helen Mnrv Duftield, only child of the late Mr. Thomas Duffield (late of the 5th Dragoon Guards, and of New House, Abingdon, Berkshire), and Mr. John filaady-Jankin*, only son of Lieutenaut-Colonel John BUndy-Jenkins, J. P., Glamorganshire, D.L., J.P., lIerk. (Sheriff, 1866). of Llauharran House, LUntristnt,and Kingston House, Abingdon. As in all fashionable weddings which have taken place in town recently. the time of the ceretnotiv wns fixed at two p.m., but some time before that hour the guests and friends of the happy couple had assembled in the famous edifice, which was dsco- rated with while flower*. The day opened very auspiciously for the ceremony, and the heavy runs of the previous evening had given way to bright sunshine. The bridegroom, accompanied by the best man (Mr. Doffiield, of Oakley House, Abingdon, and cousin of the bride), was the next to enter the church, and he at once took his place on the cantoris side of the altar. A few minutes before two an electric bell sounded through the church to notify the approach of the bride, and the organ, presided over by Mr. W. Pinoey, Mus. Hac., which until now had been giving forth strains of Mendelssohn's music, ceased, and the bridal party proceeded to the altar. Miss Duffield is a lady rather above the ordinary height, of classical proportions, and possessing a face which the word M handsome" will alone describe, oval in contour, marked by a pair of expressive grey eyes, surmounted by beautifully pencilled eyebrows, and graced with an exquisite com- plexion, it is a face which an artist would delight to depict, and which will attract attention in any assembly. She was attired in a rich white brocade. Court train and bodice, with tulle veil and wreath of oiange blossoms. The jewellery worn by her consisted of a diamond bro icti, the gift of the bridegroom's father, a diamond and emerald horse- shoe broocl;, the gift of the bridegroom, whilst diamond and emerald stars fastened the veil. In addition, she carried a large and handsome bouquet of white orchids and orange blossom*, given her by the bridegroom. Immediately following the bride, who was led to the altar by Mr. George Faber, came the six bride- maids, viz., Mist E. and Miss Ethel Blandy Jenkins (>istsrs of the bridegroom), Mis DuHieid (cousins of the bride), Miss Theobald and Mi@s Maude Theobald (aunts of the rtIi:a'\d:;S :ff bridemaids were of a most cUanning ch"racler, consisting of white crepon trimmed with chiffon, and large hats of the shades of tea roses* with bouquets to matcb. The bouquets and presents —pearl and diamond brooches—were the gift of the bridegroom. Arranged before the altar the Rev. G. 8. de Sauamarez commenced and concluded the impressive marriage service. Originally it had been intended to have the service a choral one, but at th IMt moment the arrange- ment was altered. Both bride and bridegroom answered the responses in firm though modulated tones, which could only be heard by the few in the immediate neighbourhood. After the ceremony the parties tiled into the vestry, where the register was signed, in addition to the newly-married pair, by the mother and father of the bride and bride- groom. This duty concluded, the huppv pair, followed by the gue>U and to the joyous refrain of Mendelssohn's "Weddine March," left the church And proceeded to Cowan's Hotel, Dover-street, where a reception was held. Tho weddiug lasted juat fifteen minutes. Later in the day the bride, attired in a silver grey cashmere dress, with white silk panels, and waistcoat braided with silver, and hat of pink roses, left with her husband for Dover, en route for thq Con. tinent, where the honeymoon wilt be spent. The bridecake was made by Searcey. A COUNTESS AND HER DOGS. A certain Countess Potocka has (says the Standard's Paris correspondent) long been a nnto- riety at St. Cloud, where she lived at No. 53, Quai de St. Cloud. She had a mania for enticing other people'* dogs to her house, where she kept them. Her neiglibourshad-in vain lodged complaint after complaint against her for the nuisance caused them by the dogs' constant harking. The Police Commis- sary paid no attention to them. At last, however, the home in which she lived was sold to a M. Victor Bartholome, who is the keeper of a restaurant, next door. Countess Potocka, who had never paid any rent to the previous proprietor, refused to p»y anything to M. Bartholome, who naturally had her evicted. She was an eccentric woman, living alone. No sort of furniture was found in her house, not even a bed. She slept winter and summer on a truss of s'raw, In the midst of her dogs. When the bailiffs entered her house they found her surrounded by 41 dogs of various breeds, many of them still wearing collars bearing the name of their legitimate owners. The greater number of the dogs were sold to a dog- fancier, but the others, which were of no value, were killed ivid buried in the garden. What has become of Countess Potocka is not stated, but her former neighbours are rejoiced at her disappear- ance.

TELEPHONING ON TELEGRAPH WIRES. An adapttion of the telephone to existing te'I graph linf- h. jast been successfully completed 4, langeino.ti, and Gla,g,,? by Mr. A. Erskine Muirhead, of Gia&gow. Tho telephone. used are the French type, with microphones. The line has two intermediate stations-one at Port Dundas and the other at Kirkintilloch, but this in no way impairedthe speaking; indeed, it is pfrt)- posed to add another two intermediate stations, making six telephones served by a single line. Though the telegraph instruments were emp'oyed^ simultaneously, there was no interruption; and it is intended that the telegraph instruments shall be discarded.

On Tuesday tuorning, at a qunrter to twelve, the marriage of Miss KAt" Anne Skyrme, second daughter of Mr. Edward Skyrme, of Minavon, Whitchurch, and Mr. Charles Saiikey, junior, of Bryntaff Houoe, Llnndaff, took plice v St. M.iry's Parish Church, Whitchurch. Miss Edith Sankey (cousin to. the bridegroom), and Miss Nellie Price-opened at the throat ovflc » vest of salmon pink; the kitt and caffs were trimmed with a single line of cord of the same shade, and their Leghorn hats were drawn to shape with knots and loops of the same coloured ribbon. Each bpdemaid wore a pearl and gold brooch, the gift of the bridegroom, and carried a dainty little basket of exotic,, ornamented with pink ribbon appendages. Mr Frank Saukey, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. The church was crowded with specta- tors eager to witness the ceremony, nnd throughout the vilhgn signs of festivity might be observed. The Rev. F. Skrrine, of Devizes, brother of tOo bride, safely tied the nuptial knot, and wassasistod in this pleasant duty by the Rev. J. T. Clarke, vicar of St. Mary's, Whitchurch. The lovely weather bursting on us with its golden sunshine lifter such rains and chills as we experienced Monday. was in itself enough to bring back Hgbt textile. and bright shades rather than the neutral tints we anticipate with coming autumn days. A Oipe de chine in cream, made in the latest approved fashion of the Princess of Wales, with a posi-tte of heliotrope velvet at the back' of the collar, from which braces of heliotrope velvet were worn beneath the arms, and lost their end. in other rosettes at the waist, could not fail to be stylish and much admired. A crSpe voile dress, with sprigs of heliotrope on a cream ground, revealing a vest of dull sea green, formed a pretty combination with a cream lace hat and trimmings of a corresponding hue. Mrs. Skyrme (mother of the bride) wore a dark chocolate silk, plainly made, but relieved with a rich visite of Honiton lace. The bonnet was composed .By the way, what are bonnets composed of nowadays ? A puff of wind would be too much for them, but for the steady- ing influences of heavy toilets and pins. Well, there were colours in it-cliomfelto relieved by old goldl A lovely cashmere riiess of lavender was drawn in under a yoke of figured Indian silk, the hat surmounted by chiffon trimmings of a corres- ponding shade. The caterers for the iijeuner were Messrs. George, of Cardiff, but the wedding cake itself had been presented by Messrs. Hnntley and Pulmer. Ber hat of grey lace straw supported a soft-eyed seagull, nesiling in loops ot primrose chiffon.

I DROWNING CASE AT TONGWYNLAIS. On Tuesday morning, its some of the mAn employed at the MelingrifEth Tin-plate Works were returning to their homel at Tongwynl.is, they found the dead body of Mr. Wiiliaih Preston in the canal near the Tongwynlais Lock. His watch Jlad stopped at nine o'clock on the pre- vious evening, so it is conjectured that he must have been in the water aome hours before that time. Mr. Preston was about 80 years of age and was highly respected. He was better known as "William Pieston, Rliubiua'; for before removing to Llanditff, where he at the time of his death resided with dis dnushters, he lived at Rhubina Farm, which homestead he occu- pied for abjut 25 years. At the time of his death the deceased was employed by Lord Bute in carrying out some improvement* on the Garth Mountain, from which I)IILC.0 he was returning along the canal bank on Monday evening, when, it is thought, he must have slipped and fell into the water.

COMMERCIAL EDUCATION. An attempt will (according to the Loudon cor- respondent of the Manchester Guardian) be made at the autumnal meeting of the Associated Chambers of Commerce to promote something like unanimous action in regard 10 the question of commercial education. Many local chambers have adopted sympathetic motions, and some have formulated local schemes, but as yet very few have, like London nnd Manchester, carried those schemes into effect. There is no intention, of course, to ask the associated chambers to adopt a Imrd-iind-fast scheme. It is felt that the char- acter of the schemes must depend very much on local circumstances. All that i. now sought is a general application of the principle.

A PriOPER SORT OF JUDGE. FAILURE OF AN ABERGAVENNY AUCTIONEER. A meeting of the creditors of A. J. Hancock, auctioneer and accountant, of Frogmore-s'ttet, Abergavenny, was held on .Tuesday lit [lie offices of the official receiver at Merthyr. The receiving order had been made "POll the petition of acredilor. No statement of affairs had been filed, it being reported that the debtor had absconded. Mr. T. B. Tomkini*, accountant, Abergavenny, was nppointed trustee of the estate, with a committee of inspection.

THE STRAND ABDUCTION CASE.
