>!»• pur it in that way.—Annie Foulkes, of London, said that slie was at the time the all gcd ns-ault was committed a visitor at Rhvl, and stayed in Windsor street. On the day in question she was s .iTinicer at the end of Windsor street and Clift Ellis in Wellington road. Clift struck EHis on 'heiaee. She did not see Ellis push Clift, 1 ut the 1 Her struck the former tw. or three times on the Mie did not hear Ellis saying- anything to Clifr, and if he had she would have heard him. Ellis came from the direction of the market, followed by Clift.—In reply to Mr Roberts witness denied that she had a conversation with Mr Ellis in reference to this matter—she did not know Mr Ellis. The solicitor wrote to her, and she supposed he had got her address from her landlady in Windsor street, to whom she had given if in ense any lettersmight come for her. She was quite sure that Clift followed Ellis on the day in question.—Eliz ibeth Eoulkes, Water street, said she saw Clift going up to a lady and gentleman and strike the latter. That gentle- man was Mr Ellis. She did not hear Ellis say any- thing to Clift. but told him to be careful or he would go for a policeman —In cross-examination witness said that Clift did not shove Ellis but slap- ped him on the face, and she was very sorry that she had seen it, ns she had to come forward to give evidence. — The Chairman said that in the case of Clift agninst Ellis all his colleagues had heard it, and thev wodd dismiss the case. In the one of Ellis aerain.st Clift, only himself (the chairman) and Dr. Butterton had heard it. They had considered it very cardullv, and the evidence was not exactly alike." Mr Davies had spoken against the evidence of Jones, the hall-keeper. He ítho chairman) thought Jones had ginn his evidence in a Ten straight-forward manner, though perhaps he was not exactly what the legal profession would call a "good witness." Probably, if thev* took a strict legal line they ought to fine both parties, but they had decided to dismiss this case also the provoca- tion to Clift was very great. SURETIES OF THE PEACE. Mr Prvce Dovies, Queen street, sought to have Mr Edward ()>ctri«. Water street, bound over to Keep the peace.—Mr Win. Davies (Messrs. Pavies and Roberts) appeared for Mr Davies, and Mr Edward Roberts represented Mr Owens.—Before the case was opened the Chairman suggested that the parties should come to a settlement between themselves.— Mr W. Davies consulted his client, who said he was afraid of Mr Owens, and the case proceeded.—The applicant stated that he owned land in Parson's lane, and Mr Owens owned some Lnd adjoining. He also had a field near Vurnl, and Mr Owen oc cupied the next field to it. Mr sheep were trespassing continually on the flela it Yoryd, and on the 31st ultimo Mr Prvee Davies met Mr Owens in Parson's lane, and thought he had come across is field from the station. He told Mr Owens that it appeared that he was not satisfied with the sheep trespassing but he must trespass himself as well. Mr Owens then" flew at him," using very bad language, and raised his stick and threatened to strike him. He 'the applicant stepped backwards from 60 to 70 yards, and Mr Owens followed him for that distance with his upraised stick. He was afraid of Mr Owens.—Iu cross-examination Mr Davies said he was as active as Mr Owens, and avoided the stick. Mr Owens told him that he had not crossed the field but a garden close by. The garden belonged to him (Mr Davies), but was occu- pied bv Inspector McLaren.— By the Perch He could sav whether Mr Owens was iu his field.— Mr Roberts Then what right had you to charge him with trespass.—Witness said he wanted to have a talk with Mr Owens about the sheep trespass as well.—Erancis Jones, Mill Bank. said that he saw the parties in Parson's r. ad on the day in question. He heard Mr Owens saying, You have been say- ins- I drink brandy. What is that to you; I pay for it." He saw Mr Owens rise his stick, but he did not hear him say anything while doing so. They were about two yards apart. Mr Davies said, I never saw such a thing. Look at the man."—By Mr Roberts If Mr Owens intended striking Mr Davies there was nothing to prevent him doing so. —Mr Roberts submitted that the case was the most paltry one that ever came before a bench of magis- trates, and said that the action of the applicant was actuated by malice of long standing respecting an alleged trespass which was caused through Mr Davies's fences being in bad state.—Mr Owens (who appeared very ill,and was accommodated with a chair during the hearing) said that he had attended that day against the wishes of his doctor. He had been ill for months, and the best part of the time he was confined to bed. On the 31st ultimo he was cros- sing from the station to his slaughter-house in Parson's lane, through Inspt. McLaren's garden (through which he had permission to go), when Mr Davies accosted him and said, "You are trespassing again. You and your sheep arc a regular nuisance to the country." He asked what it was he said,, and remarked that if he said it again he would thrash him with his stick and raised it, but did not intend to strike Mr Davies with it. Mr Davies had also his stick up —The Chairman remarked that it was a pity the case had been brought there, and it would have been much better if the parties had, as he suggested at the commencement, come to a. settle- ment between themselves. However, Mr Owens admitted having raised his stick, and legally he was wrong in doing so. and they were bound to bind him over in the sum of £5 in his own recognisance, both patties to pay their owe costs with the excep- tion of the court fees.—Mr Owens said he would like to have Mr Davies bound over also. He was continually annoying him.—The Chairman said they could not do that then. Mr Owens would have to appr-ar against him at the next court if he wished to bind Mr Davies over. BBEACN OF THE EDUCATIONAL BYE-LAWS. At the instance of Mr Jones, the school attendance officer, the following persons were fiued for not sen- ding their children to school:—Catherine Pugh (whose child had only attended 19 times out of a possible 89), 3s. Eran Evans, 3s. Joseph Thomas, 3s.; John Williams, porter, Rhuddlaa (who complained of the teachers' conduct, and was recommended to go to the school managers), 5s. Several others were dis- missed with a caution. VIOLATED CREDENTIALS. Charles Salt and Edward Salt, Frondeg, Conway, brothers, were charged by P.C. Taatfe with being druuk and disorderly on Saturday night.—Both pleaded, guilty.—The officer said he was sent for to the Dinorben Hotel to turn the prisoners out. He found the prisoner Edward Salt very obstreperous, and was breaking the furniture at the hotel. He was removed, and when outside the j Iritloner took off his coat, and wanted to got in ag .in. Charles Salt tried to assist him. Both wero lo ;ked up sub- sequently.—Inspector McLaren add he had reason to believe that the men were not served with drink at the Dinorben.—Cileries Salt up a batch of pipers to the Bench.—The Chairman WhaL are these for ?—Salt To show that I am not aa idle man nor a drunken man.—The Chairman But we h iv» F > fs that sometimes you are a drunken man (i uight'-r). I don't think we need read these thie:— A fine ot 10s. and costs was inflicted in e.; h ciso, the nuney being paid by a friend of the prisoners. AN" OBLIVIOUS DRUNKARD. Morris Jones, a native of Shrewsbury, but now employed at xVbevgole. was brought up charged by P.O. Cunningham with being drunk and disorderly in High street on Sunday.—Prisoner pleaded nut guilty —Th-3 officer deposed that he saw prisoner in High street druuk. lie advised him to go home, but he refused, and asked the officer if he could have a pint of beer. He subsequently saw himiu Russell road bv th Swan IUli, and as he aalll refused to go homo he was locked up.—The prisoner sail he had a fit remembered nothing- afterwards until he round himself in the cell. He was not drunk, as he had only one pint of ale.—Inspector McLaren said he smashed a bucket in the police station.—The Chairman Perhaps you do not remember tfiat.— Prisoner I remember nothing after having the fit. —The Chairii>an My impression is that you wore not only drunk but very drunk. It does not matter whether you had one pint or half-a-dozen if it made you drunk.—Fined Gs., with 9s. costs.
