. SOOTH WALES FINANCE.
SOOTH WALES FINANCE. (Cardiff Account Days, June 14 & 28.) Saturday, June 9th, 1900, There has been a complete absence of buyers from the local market to-day, and Its a result prices have been easier all yound. The London Market is holding itself in. both on account of the course of events in South Africa and in China. Naturally an influence of this kind is speedily felt on the provincial markets. Finally, we are at the end of a most un- satisfactory account, and those who are Inclined to do business arc disposed to defer it until the new account. A fair idea of the condition of the market may be gathered from the fact that Newport- Abercarn Ordinary have been further marked down ;13, to 11%, although no business is reported at this level. Three weeks ago, L when the dividend was announced, the price ran up to 11%, and now with the report out and showing even better results than had been expected ihree weeks ago, the price is back to 11. Seeing that a dividend of 24s per share is due on them this brings the price back to ibelow par. Clearly the shares are better yalue now on their merits than they were ihree weeks ago, and yet the market price its lower. The same line of argument applies to Tredegars, Ebbw Vales, and Rhymney Irons. In regard to Ebbw Vales and Rhymney Irons there seems to be good reason for the belief that the lower prices are due in the main to an exceptinally large number of options for the call falling- due at the end of this month and the Beginning of July. Options in Ebbw Vales and Rhymney Iron New Shares have been exceptionally heavy. As much as £ 1 and .£1 5s has been paid for the call of Ebbw Vales at 16 on the dates named, and 4s and 5s on Rhymney Iron New Shares at about 53s and 54s. Naturally, under these cir- cumstances one set of operators are inter- eested in keeping prices down, and the other in rising them both to cover their option money and so make a profit. So far all the luck has been on the side of the down grade operators. Other Coal Shares, although not immediately concerned, are naturally drawn into the voitex. No doubt when the time for the exercise of options has passed we shall see a rebound in prices, and perhaps before, for the general outlook of the coal trade seems to be very satisfactory. Other branches of ibe market show no alteration cither way. There has been nothing doing iu the Mining section of the market to-day. This is hardly a matter for surprise considering the present outlook, and the fact that Monday is carry-over day. The following changes in value are noted n the ofaciai list of the Cardiff Stock Exchange:— I?ise W. Hancock and Co. Debentures for iE9,200 have been redeemed during th;) year. The coal trade for the year has bean prosperous, and the good demand at improved prices con- tinues. Wages and the cost cf materials have still further advanced. The mines and works are m » fairly satisfactory condition. LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Saturday. Money continued in abpnrlant supply, and with only a moderate demand for accommodation advances until Monday were freely lent at 1% per cent., short fix- tures being again easily obtainable at 2 per cent. The Discount Market continued weak, and Bills being scarce brokers freely I discounted fine three months' paper at 2% per cent., though 2* per cent. was charged in some instances. Berlin private discount advanced to 4% per cent. ¡ On the Stock Exchange business was again restricted owing to the close approach of the settlement, which com- mences in Mining Shares on Monday, and in general securities on Tuesday. A fiat tone again prevailed in most departments, chiefly owing to the serious state of affairs in the Far East and the continued absence oi public buying British Funds further declined in spite of the increasing ease in the Money Market, and movements in Home Railway Stocks were all in a down- ward direction. The principal feature of the day, however, was a very considerable I drop in American Railroad Stocks, fol- lowing the heavy fail at Wall-street on the reports of crop damage. Canadian lines also gave way in sympathy with the drop in Yankees. South Africans opened dull, j and after slightly rallyiag on General But- tcr's successful movements in the neigh- bourhood of Laing's Nek closed very-flat -on the official news that the Boers had cut the telegraph line at Roodeval, t-o the north of Kroonstad, operators taking an unfavour- L able view of the continued activity of the "Boers in the Orange River Colcfoy. Foreign Bonds and Rio Tintos closed weak in response to unfavourable French advices. Wesiraiiacs opened strcagu, but prices re- lapsed at the fmiah in sympathy with the weakness prevailing in other departments. The market for Home Government I Securities showed increased weakness, and Consols further declined 18 for money to 101 p-, and for account to 101- National War Loan also receded to 1^- premium for account.
