I ithe Severn and Wye and Severn Bridge Railway traffic for the past month is estimated to produce £2,803 as compared with £ 3,333 for the corresponding month of last vear. We made a reference a few days ago to the position of the Cambrian Debenture Stock, and have now to report that the de- mand for it still continues at a premium, which is very nearly four per cent. above the original 15 per cent. at which the directors issued it. This new issue shares public favour with the other securities of the company, all of which have risen very much in esteem during the past three or four years, and with good reason, for the prospects of the Cambrian undertaking are yearly becoming very much brighter. Within a short time the Wrexham and Ellesmore link, which is to connect the Cambrian with the new line crossing the Dee, part of the undertaking of the Cheshire Lines Comrmttee) and making a new and shorter route to Liver- pool is expected to be completed. So that during the summer months there may be anticipated a very large increase of the passenger traffic to the Welsh coast water- ing-places. As showing the progressive development of the Cambrian's undertaking it may be mentioned that the gross revenue during the second half of 1887 was £101,859, and during the corresponding period of 1892 it was £ 135,270. The net revenue in the first-named period was £ 46,807, and during the second £ 61,482. Of course, there had been in the interval new capital issues, upon which it had become necessary to provide a return. Nevertheless, it is manifest that the position of the undertaking had materially improved. The Electric Anti-Corrosion Co., Limited, was registered on the 2nd inst. with a capital of £6,000, in B10 shares, to acquire and purchase an invention for which a pro- visional protection has been granted, dated March 22, 1892, and numbered 6,105(92) also French patent, numbered 223,644(92), and Italian patent, numbered 472(92), to enter into a certain agreement made between Mr J. Tellefsen and Mr J. Bennett, to acquire any suitable trade mark, and to exercise and turn to account any patents acquired by the company. The subscribers are :—Messrs Wnr. B. LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Saturday. About an average business is passing in money for a Saturday, and the market generally is steady, notwithstanding thab the prospect of a issue of American Gold Bonds seems to be indefinitely delayed, and there is therefore less chance of disturbance from an American demand for gold. It is not expected that the Stock Exchange inquiry will be at all brisk this settlement, speculation of late having been very quiet. The charge for Short Loans has been 1% per cent., and the discount rate for three months' Bank bills is 1% to 1% per cent. The feature of the Stock Exchange was the attention given to South American Rail- ways. which have been bought on the hope that the payment of £ 40,000 made to the East Argentine Railway will be but the pro- cursor to a general settlement of the railway guarantees. The rumours circulated yester- day of financial intentions of the Argentine Government turn out to be exaggerated, but it, nevertheless, appears that the posi- tion of affairs in Argentine is brightening. Business otherwise on the Stock Exchange has been very quiet, but markets on the whole have been firm. Consols closed at 98 to 98ys xd. for delivery, and 98% to 98 xd. for the account; 2% per Cent. THE TIN-PLATE TRADE.
THE TIN-PLATE TRADE. LIVERPOOL, Saturday.—The absorbing topic this wrek has been the steady rise in block tin— from £91 10s to £ 95-and it is quite likelv ehis is only the begmnlllg. Up to the present time there is no prospect of the rescinding of the clause in the McKniley Bill levying a duty of 4 cents per lb on all imported tin on and after the 1st of -nt July next. It is evidently intended to allow this clause to couie into force, and consequently there is sure to be a rush to import every available ton before it becomes operative, and thereby cause scaicity on this side and much higher values. Tin-plates ara not so far disturbed, but this may follow later on. Meantime the small retail business, which has been usual wirh us for a very long time, continues, no dealer caring tj order any plates for which he does not see an immediate outlet. We are glad to record a re- commencement; in the Danuhian trade, several transactions having taken place this week in brands peculiar to that inorket at full prices. We quote prices same as last week viz. :— Bessemer cokss C 14 x 20, lis 6d to 11s 71Ad C 14 x 1]/, lis lOVod and 12s squares and odd sizes 12,-i bal". THE IRON TRADE.
THE IRON TRADE. WOLVERHAMPTON, Saturday.—The condition of the foreign trade is attracting considerable atten- wu-i aiuonf' '1011 and steel masters this week. Whi.st values continue to rule low it is yet re- garded to some extent as a compensatory feature that the trade is not falling off with regard to bulk. the shipments of iron and steel for the, first two months of this year, compared with the cor- responding period of last year, showing a small increase 111 quantity. In some departments value as well is progressive—a remark which is particu- larly applicable to galvanised sheets. During la/t month this class of iron sent to the colonies and abroad was valued at £ 173, j64, an increase on January of £ 15,408, and on the corresponding period of £18,85ó, For the combined months of January and February last year, he exports were valued at £ 349,153, also an increase on the same two months of 1892 of £ 18,233. Australia, Chili, and" other countries all show advance for February over January. The Australian exports for last month were worth £ 50,603, an improvement upon the opening month of 1893 of £ 15,567. and upon February, 1892, of about £ 8,600. The shipments to Chili last month were worth L15,501, an aug- mentation of £ 7,183 upon February, and of £ 6,602 upon February last year. Shipments to other countries" for February figure for £ 20,861, an advance of :66,821 on January, and of LS,311 on February last year. It is believed that the returns for March will be even more satisfac- tory, partly because of the limiteri trade of the first two months of the year, and partly from the character of current business and the inquiries and offers not being considered. It is hoped that; the business with America in boops, plates, and sheets, which has been better this February than last year, will be still further improved by the removal of hindrances under the policy which President Cleveland has now definitely announced. That values are much below their normal standard will be gathered from the fact that gal- vanised sheets are barely 2s 6J better than a month ago, although, spelter has risen by about £1. The quotation still continues an average of III J311 delivered Liverpool, but some merchants quote about 5s less. Best thin sheets are "9 to £10 for sing-es, and doubles £ 10 10s to £ 11 10s, lattens being a still further £ 1 10s per ton extra. Boat plates are in moderate demand, serviceable qualities being obtainable at about j37 10s to £ 7 154. Ordinary tank plates are £ 7, and boiler qualities £ 8 10 £ 9. Ttie, combination reported last week amongst the tube strip makers has slightly strengthened quotations, and a similar movement is talked of in the sheet iron trade, though the previous attempts in that direction have not been successful. Gas tube strip is fixed at;CS 15s to IC6; iioopq at L6 to jE;6 5s for exports, ftnd jB6 10s for local demand, the quality of the latter being inferior to that generally intended for shipments. With reference to high class de- scriptions of iron, it is understood that orders for considerable quantities of good chain an cable bars are being held 111 reserve until the quarterly meetings, in case of any favourable turn of the market in favour of buyers, and that they then will be given out. The present low range of iron in best and second ciass quantities is beiner attri- buted by some makers to the recent drop of 10s in marked bars, a step which these authorities t: declare was a mistake. Marked bars are f,7 10s, as the basis price, with CS 2.. 6d as the figure for the L.W.R.O. brand of the Earl Dudley's Round Oak Ironworks Co., Limited. Complaints are being made at tha district iron- works to the effect that the Government Arsenals are supplied with Belgian iron instead of Stafford- shire iron as formerly, the foreign me. al being sold as English by merchants. Finished ironiijakers decline to make any further concessions, and cases are mentioned this week in which two offers of 500 tons each have been withheld from the dis- trict finished iron makers, because they refused to "split" the half-a-crown per ton which repre- sented the difference between buyer and seller. With reference to the pig iron trade inquiries are being received for renewed supplies, as deliveries under old contracts will terminate with this month. Prices quoted for forward business are about the same as those recently given—57s 6d for native all-mine pigs, 40s to 443 for part mines. 35s (, 1, 111, to 36s for common. Northampton pigs are 41s to 43«, and Derhyshircs 42-; to 44s, with Lincolns 46s 6d to 47s 6d.

THE DISAPPEARANCE OF Aj COTTON…
THE DISAPPEARANCE OF A COTTON BROKER. Privateinformafcion to hand enables us Echo) to say that the body of Mr G. H" Davidson, who had been missing just four weeks, was found on Wednesday at Millom, where the body had been cast on the shore. A very great friend of the deceased recognised the body, and at the inquest held on Thursday, a verdict of "Funnd drowned" was returned. The interment took place in Cumberland on Friday. With reference to the fate of the late Mr Davidson, which has been explained as arising from pecuniary difficulties, a correspondent writes :— Oiie of the remarkable stories" connected with another Liverpool mystery" is the absence from the witness-box at Mrs Maybriek's trial of this same Mr Georcre II. Davidson. He w is Mr James Maybriek's most intimate friend a bed was always ready at his house, and con- stantly occupied by this same Mr George R. Davidson and during Mr .Tames Maybriek's illness he was constantly at his bedside, and the dying man expired in his arms. During 1\lr Maybriek's trial he took the deepest inteiest in the case, and suffered considerably from the excitement thereby engendered. Mr Davidson was pa 1 ticularly bellicose towards the chemist Heaton, who testified concerning James May- brick's habits of taking arsenical pick-me-ups; but Mr George R. Davidson was absent from the witness-box, a fact which may have meant nothing, but which has been much commented on by Mr Alex.uulf-r M'Dougall and those who ha.ve laboured to secure a re-opening of the case.
