MRS., KERNAHAN'S STORY.* WHY did we enjoy so much this simple tale for girls? We ask the question for the. story has a slender plot and owes its charm to ail uridefiiiable atmosphere of healthy thought and 'kindly sympaithy. The heroine is as natural in London society—though it be the society of a self-made rich draper in South London- as she was in her prairie home. She never ceases to be kindly, and carries with her everywhere a heart of love and a graciousness that breaks down all barriers. No wonder the man who finds her in possession" in Canada of his miss- ing dog makes her a present of the dog and gives her a note for herself. The chapter headed The Cup of Humilia- tion," is written with a brisk style that brings before our mind the whole scene, and the action of the guests who turn their backs on the haughty London girl who despises her mother and acts rudely to her cousin's friends is at once credit- able to them and true to life. How Peg applies the "oiled feather" that brings everything to a happy end must be read to be appreciated. Mrs. Sweeney accepts the amends of Millicent, and in true Irish fashion says, in response to the in- vitation to stay at the house where she had been rudely treated, We'll sure come, and I hope you'll all come and see us way back home. The crossing's no- thing, and we'll be real glad to have you all." A healthy tale that cannot fail to to please and make hearts beast kindly.

■ STUDDERT KENNEDY'S LATEST. -7~ WE expect "Woodbine Willie to be vigorous, and we are not disappointed. He is a master of invective and has com- mand of a wonderful vocabulary. We feel we are listening to him pouring out torrential eloquence, and are not sur- prised to learn that he dictated this book, Lies! by G. A. Studdert Kennedy (Hodder and Stoughton. 6s.). We pity the stenographer who had to take down his rapidly spoken words, but we feel sure that our sympathy was shared by the kindly writer. Mr. Studdert Ken- nedy hates lies,, and he can denounce them with a force that wins our good will. But he is mo.re than a lie flagel- lant-he is a man who wishes to make life pure and healthy. He hates and loathes war, but he truly says, "-what has been the history of the past must be the history of the future—there must always be these outbreaks of barbarism, unless the nations find their God and, grow up to the vision of eternal life. The hunger must be fed. This law is a law of the human spirit as fixed and firm in its operatioh, as universal and as inevitable, as the law of gravity, and in- deed one with it, as all life is one."

CHRIST AND WOMAN'S POWER LADY FRANCES BALFOUR, in her intro- duction to this brightly written and in- forming volume, Christ and Woman's Potver, by E. Picton Turbeville (Morgan and Scott. 3s. 6d.), says: "If the Church still continues the belief that whatever the gifts of woman, or the out- pouring of the Spirit upon them, they are to be debarred in consecrated build- ings from showing the things that belong 9 to our peace; if they are to be held in bondage to words spoken by St. Paul to the Early Church, every other portion of his administrative advice having been set aside, then the Church will not for the first time in her history lose an oppor- tunity, of binding to herself the whole body of faithful believers." The book is a commentary on the preface, although it does not deal in detail with the admis- sion of women to the sacred ministry. Miss Turbeville believes that women have a great part to play in thêpublic life of the future. She is convinced that the late Professor Kidd was right when he argued that women will demonstrate the use of power entirely divorced from force. The Spaniards have a proverb in which lies a wealth of truth: An ounce of mother is worth a ton of priests.' No priest recognised Christ; and to-day it is possible that history will repeat itself, and ordinary lay women will be the true priests of the Kingdom of God." Miss Picton Turbeville shows the re- markable progress women have made in almost every department of human learning and activity: She draws a vivid picture of the opposition they faced and the way in which they over- came it. This has been already told by other writers,, and the most important part of her volume consists in her effort to outline the future and the part women will bear in its development. There is much to be done at home and abroad, and certainly the world never stood so much in need as it does to-day of the effective mobilisation of all the best that God has given humanity. Women must "be used more and more as leaders in philanthropy and in moral movements, where intuition supported by strong feeling can carry "through what mere argument can never effect. We com- mend the burning pages of this book to all who wish to see what Christ has done for women and what women may-do for Him- "Pes of itbe Prairi, By Mrs. Coulson Ke,rnZ&U. Press, to. feet-l
