Mountain Ash Notes.
Mountain Ash Notes. BY AP PENNAR. On Sunday evening last the Rev. J. LI. Croft, L.D., Vicar of Mountain Ash, delivered an eloquent sermon at St. Margaret's Church in commemor- ation of the first anniversary of the European War. Twelve months ago, he remarked, we hardly realised what was going to happen to us as a nation and people. Now, however, notwithstanding all the loss and peril of the past year, we were firm in the belief that the sacrifice was worth making, for without truth, honour, justice, and righteousness life would not be worth living. Referring to those who had given their lives in the struggle the Vicar said that every duty faithfully done now would have its reward in the life to come. Since Miskin has been made a separate parish the work of the Mountain Ash clergy has been con- siderably less than it was formerly. As is well known, St. David's Welsh Church has been included in the Miskin parish, and the Churches in the Mountain Ash parish now consist of St. Margaret's, St. Dyfrig's, and St. Illtyd's, tUefnpennar. From a statement of accounts just published it is interesting to note that some j3489 4s. 4d. was given towards Church work at Mountain Ash last year. The exact receipts for each church were as follows :—St. Mar- garet's, C367 19s. Id. St. Dyfrig's, £51 2s. 4d. and St. Illtyd's, zC70 2s. lid. In addition to these sums A;6 17s. 6d. was collected towards the support of the waifs and strays, and zC16 5s. 4d. towards the support of foreign missions, besides the large amount required to carry on the work of the six Sunday Schools in the parish. Much misconception appears to exist amongst the workmen of Nixon's Collieries regarding the terms on which they decided to re- turn to work after the last brief strike, and on Sunday last Mr. E. Morrell, the agent of the Taff and Cynon District, addressed a meet- ing at the Nixon's Workmen's Insti- tute with the object of making the position clearer. Mr Joseph Thomas occupied the chair, and Mr Morrell was supported by Mr William Lam- burn, the secretary of the Deep Duffryn Federation Lodge. At the outset of the proceedings an appeal was made to the press not to make use of certain observations made by the agent. Before last Sunday I had not had an opportunity of hearing Mr. E- Morrell, the agent of the Taff and Cynon District. The impression I received of him was that of a sincere and honest leader. For the greater part of the time he was calm and col" lected, but one incident showed that he can take fire when the occasion arises. During question time a young man present, with the sublime confidence of youth, ventured to say that Mr. Morrell's statements did not agree with the facts. Mr. Morrell showed great anger, and replied he had given the facts of the terms sub- mitted before the strike, and the variations of the amended terms ac- cepted by the Cardiff Conference.
