Letters to the Editor. ABERDARE RED CROSS SOCIETY. Sir,—I should like to clear up a mis- conception that has arisen, with refer- ence to the Red Cross Society and the proposed acquisition of Abernant House for purposes of a hospital for our wounded sailors and soldiers. At the meeting of the Aberdare Relief Com- mittee the chairman of the Council and of that Committee (Mr. William Thomas) is reported to have said that when Abernant House is required as a hospital, the work should be done through the Aberdare Relief Committee. This is a mistaken notion, for the Re- lief Committee will have nothing to do with that matter. The War Office will act through the local Branch of the Red Cross Society, and their work is quite distinct and totally different from anv work of the Relief Corn in ittee.-Y our;, etc., ,Tr EDITH F. WILLIAMS (Hon. Sec. of the local branch of Women's V.A. Detachment (92) Glamorgan).

-----------|The War-Lat st…
| The War-Lat st Jllews. India's 70,000.—It is no longer a secret that India has already despatched two splendid divisions of infantry to Europe, and one cavalry brigade, while three more calvalry bri- gades will follow immediately. That India has been in a position to send over 70,000 combatants to fight for the Empire across the seas is a source of pride and satisfaction. Practically all the Ruling Chiefs have placed their military forces and resources of their States at the disposal of the Govern- merit. Canada's Quota. Announcement Mas permitted to be made on Wednes- day of the sailing 11 days ago of the fiist Canadian contingent and of its due arrival in port. It consists of the Princess Patricia's Light Infantry and three batteries of Royal Field Artillery. New Zealand News. A New Zea- land cablegram states that there are five German cruisers in the Pacific which have not been accounted for—the Scharnhorst, Greisenau, Nurnberg, Stettin, and mden. Mine Layer Caught A Hull trawler reported on arrival at Hull on Wednes- day that a British gunboat had cap- tured a trawler, purporting to belong t" Grimsby, which had been mine-lay- mg. There were 200 mines aboard this trawler which had been taken to a cer- tain port. The report also states that two Grimsby trawlers had been sunk and ten captured. The German plan seems to be to capture trawlers, man them with German crews and then start mine-laying. Aberdare Rumour.—A rumour gained currency in Aberdare yesterday that bir John Jellicoe. the British Admiral, had been killed. There is no confirm- ation to this. Towels Wanted by Aberdare Man. A letter has been received from Trooper Matt Davies, Enst Avenue. Aberdare, who is at present with the Glamorgan Yeomanry in Norfolk. Trooper Divios says the weather is splendid, and if it were not so "it would be God help them, as they are without any covering." Several of the men arc also short of towels, and he asks his wife to send some to them. The War and Public Houses. Enquiries made yesterday (Wednes- day) elicited the information that the police do not intend making an appli- cation at present for the earlier closing of public houses at Aberdare and Mountain Ash. Such a step is not deemed necessary, inasmuch as there are but few unemployed in the district. and no untoward scenes have occurred at night. A Novel Scheme. A scheme has been inaugurated by the rtvembers of the Constitutional Club, Aberdare, to augment the Prince of WTftles' Fund. It takes the form of a prize drawing, the 1st prize being an Arabian Donkey named Kaiser II. A procession will also take place on Satur- day next, starting from Aberaman, and will parade the principal streets of Aberdare :\nd Trecynon, accompanied by the donkey (decorated). A number of little girls and Boy Scouts will carry' collecting boxes on behalf of the Fund. CHURCH LADS' BRIGADE DEPART. On Tuesday morning the first section of the Church Lads' Brigade, who had volunteered for service abroad with the 5th Battalion the Welsh Regiment, left Aberdare by the 10.90 a.m. T.V.R. f°^ their headquarters at Pontypridd, and thence by the mid-day train for John- son Station, five miles from Neyland. A very large number of their fr'erde gave the boys an encouraging send-off. The new Vicar of Aberdare, the Rev. J. A. Lewis, B.A., brought them per- sonally a large hamper of fruit for their* use in the train. He was introduced to each lad by their commanding officer, Captain T. G. Chivers. The Vicar ad- dessed them very appropriately on departing to serve their King and co^.IJ" try, and not to forget they were still Church boys. They were each presented by the members of St. Mark's Mission with a pocket hymn-book.
