MONEY _MARRET.
MONEY _MARRET. [SPECIALLY TFIXGRAPHFD.1 LONDON, MONDAY EVENING. The Money Market is in a quiet state. The supply of capital is not large, but an in- creased looked for early next month, when the distribution of dividends is made. Mean- while the American Exchange keeps steady. The tendency is towards ease. Three Months' bills are taken at 2-, and day-to-day advances on Consols are freely obtainable at ii per cent. On the Stock Exchange business has con- tinued quiet. An uneasy feeling was created by the foreign political news, and a general decline took place in the value of both hime and foreign securities. It appears, however, that stock is by no means plentiful, hence any serious relapse is out of the question. A sharp relapse has occurred in the metal market, but trade prospects are considered very satisfactory, and so soon as the present disquietude has passed away we may look for a sharp recovery in prices. Consols are unaltered for delivery, but 7 lower for the account, at 971 to 97; for both. Reduced and New Three per Cents, 95 J to 96. The English Railway Market opened heavily, and during the greater part of the day the tone was r, flat, political influences producing heaviness. A sharp relapse in metals was also not without effect, but to- wards the close of business the tendency was decidedly stronger. Brighton traffic, al- though showing a small increase, was satis- factory, considering the wet weather of the past week, and the fact that it compares with Ihe heavy total last year. Scotch lines also were firmer otherwise there was very little lone, and no particular movement occurred. Brighton receipts show an increase of £2G5. Caledonian and Brighton A rose 5 North British, f North-Eastern fell$; Chatham Preference and Midland, Great Western, South-Eastern A, Sheffield, and Deferred, Indian Railways were quiet but tolerably irm. In Canadian Railways not much was done, and the tone was rather weak. Great Western receipts show an increase of £ 4,000. Some Grand Trunks fell j to J. The American Railway Market was throughout very quiet. Eries were rather weak, and fell | Atlantic and Great Western, í Illinois Central rose Foreign Railways were quiet, and with- out feature. Foreign Bonds were decidedly flat during the earlier part of the day. Hungarian and Russian were freely sold at a sharp decline, but there was some recovery towards the close. Egyptian, Turkish, and most other International stocks showed some re- covery from the lowest points towards the finish, owing to the firmer tendency of the Paris Bourse. There was a continuance of speculative inquiry for 3Ie-iican, which left off firm. Other" stocks were_ very quiet. Mexican rose h Egyptian Rails, £ Daira 4 11 and State Domain fell £ Hungarian gold, I; Italian, £ Russian, £ to | most Turkish, 1-lti to The Telegraph Market was inactive, and wly unimportant changes were noticed. Old hops are quite neglected, and the demand for yearlings is very limited. SEED. LONDON AGRICULTURAL SEED MARKET, Mon- day.—(Me srs John Shaw and Son's Report.)— No fresli feature of importance has yet developed itpelf on the seed market. For the few descrip- tions needed for present sowing, there is a fair in- quiry but the usual autumn speculative demand for clovers, trefoils, &3., for spring requirements, has not, at present, made its appearance. Orders still come to hand for trifolium iucaraatum, which, on account of its extreme scarcity, are executed with difficulty. For winter tares there is a good sale, at hardening rates stocks keep at a moder- ate level. Seed rye is scarce and dear. Advices from the English seed-growing districts state that the recent rains have greatly damaged the seed crops, some of the alsike, not yet secured, having been well nigh destroyed, and the red clover is described as growing as it stands, and is, more- over, terribly beaten do,, n. Some choice new red clover?eed is now offering on Mark-lane, at a coti parative'.y low price. Italian ryegrass has advanced Is per cwt. The first shipment this season from France of new white millet, for birds, is now on sale, of which the quality is most ex- cellent. A considerable quantity of new English white mustard seed, of uuusually fine sppearanee and condition, is offering at about E5 per qr. COAL. LOrmON COAL MARKET, Monday. BARROWlRON MABKET. BARROW, Monday.—The demand for all des- cription oi hematite pig-iron is well maintained, aud this morning a firm tone is displayed all round. Bessemer all-round qu lities are worth b7s 6d to 70s per ton at makers' works, apd No. 3 forge iron is selling at about 2s 6d below these figures. Steel rails and all classes of steel goods are in good request, and the mills throughout the district are very fully employed, orders have been received well forward in several cases. Second-hand dealers are holding stocks. A steady trade in iron and steel is expected. But the stocks in hand and the heavy production must act as a check to a very sudcien rise in value. Large deliveries are being made of iron and steel to home and foreign houses.

AMERICAN IRON MARKETS. The Ironmonger publishes the following cable despatch, dated New York, September 17th :— Scotch Pig Iron.—The tone of the market for Scotch pig iron is rather quieter, and prizes are somewhat weaker. The demand is steady, how- ever, and good business is being done at the fol- lowing rates;—Gartsherrie, No. 1,$23*50; G-len- garuock, No. 1, §23"50; Coltness, No. 1, §24'50 Eglinton, No. 1. 22. A fall of 4s on each brand. For scrap iron and old rails there is an active market, and a strong unsatisfied demand for scrap iron and old rails, with a very good turnover consequently prices are firm. To-day's rates are —Scrap,$28 old rails, e.8. Old rails nominally 2s lower. Steel Rails.-No abatement is yet apparent in the inquiry for steel rails, the market for which is very active, larse sales continuing to be made at -SC5, at which figures vendors are quite firm. Tin plates maintain the satisfactory position they have lately hell, with a strong demand and good actual business, and continue to sell freely at the following pric(-s.-Or,tnLt-y cokes,$5.50; ordinary charcoal", %,25. A rise of Is on cokes. Gene.al Hardware and Cutlery.—The marked activity in these branches shows no "igna of an early subsidence, and the very satisfactory state of trade which has existed for some little time past is fully maintained. There is a well-sustained t demand, and prices are very firm all round.

WELSH VEUNACULAR PRESS.
WELSH VEUNACULAR PRESS. BY ADFYFll. n B WORK OF THE SESSION. In the Bunes au inter stiirg article appears dealing with t.,e instalments of political reform which have already been granted to the eountry by Mr Gladstone and his colleagues. They have, it is proved, rendered greater national service during the last four mouths than the Tories did during the whole of their six years of office. The Tories cannot help seeing this, and they are pro- portionately chagrined. They gnash thtir teeth as they reflect on what t' ey might have done but did not do. They recollect the Midlothian cam- I ain, and tremble as they recognise the probable repetition at no distant oate of those famous feats of oratory. THE ROESE OF LORDS. Depreciatory reference is made in the Dydd to the "cry" fur doing away with the House of Lord?. Snch a consummation would, the Dydd believes, be au irreparable loss. Lord Granville, Earl Selborn*, the Duke of Westminster, Earl Kin.berley, Earl Grey, and the Dnke of Argyll are an honour to the legislature, and the speeches of Lord Beaconstield, Lord Salisbury, Lord Cran- brook, and Lord Cairns are not lo be surpassed. To destroy the Up; er House would be to shelve m 'n of such distinction and calibre, and what g;eater absurdity than this could be perpetrated ? When the feelings of the constituencies have cooled down they viil begin to [ erceive ilie worth of the House of Lord. VISCOUNT EMLTN. Commendation is freely bestowed by the Scren upon Mr W. 11. Powell, M.P. for Carmarthen- st.ire, for his as-iduous attention to his Parlia- n,t zilary d!itieL- On the other hand, the Seven regrets to find that Viccunt Emlyn. the other county meft.ber, was absent from very many divi- sion*, and that when he did divide he votedjwith the Tories. On no occasion did his lordship plead for or side with measures which bad for their object justice to the Dissenter, the farme., or the workman, and when the Bill for closing public-houses on Sunday came on for second read- ing he was the only Welsh member II hoopposed it. WELSH HIGHER EDUCAT ON. Confidence is expressed by the Genedl in the issue of the inquiries into the state of Higher Education in Wales which are to Le made by the lioyal Commission. Wales 1ms been long and shamefully neglected in this matter, but the blame is to be attributed to Welshmen themselves. They should have stirred Parliament earlier, and fed their own childien with the food fraudulently bestowed upon strangers. THE NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD OF 1881. "Ap Corwynt," in the Uwludgwrwr, adverts to the circumstance that the locale of the National Eisteddfod to be held next year is classic ground. Iolo Morganwg, Tydfylyn, Thos. Stephens, and Ieuan Gwilit, are all celebrated names, in- separably associated II ith the trade metropolis of the Principality. That the gathering will be a success is beyond reasonable doubt. M. RENAN, A Welsh missionary in France recently wrote a very interesting letter to Dr. Edwards, of Bala, which that gentleman has published in the Goleuud, Great surprise is expressed by the venerable doctor's correspondent at the cordial reception accorded M. Renan in Christian Eng- land and the eagerness with which his lectures v. ere listened to by crow ded English audiences. For Renan's infidel works, owing- to the extra- ordinary fascination of their style, have, it is said, been the means of promulgating sceptical notions in his native country to an extent hardly credible. His object, like that of Strauss—(most callous of modern destructive critics)-is to maintain the Pautheistic as against the Theistic view of his- tory and to elude the recognition of what the- ology (in its popular language) calls the hand of God" in Christianity, by showing that Chris- tianity can be accounted for by causes which are well within the narrow horizon of our own experience. His Jesus "is a French mesmerist. and tl:e miracles" of which we read are special interventions," like that of a clock-maker puttiug his finger in to remedy the defects of his wheels. "The formation of Christendom," Renau allows, "is the g-rea test event in the religious history or the world," but the great Architect was merely a human hero. The glory of the Resurrection, for instance, Renan believes to belong to Mary Mag- dalene. Next to Jesus, it is she who has done the n ost for the founding of Christendom. The shadow created by the delicate senses of the Mag- dalen hovers still above the world. Queen and patron of idealists, she, above all others, has known how to make her dream a reality, and to impose on all men the sacred vision of her impassioned soul. Her graud affirmation of the woman's heart, 'He is riren',has been the basis of the world's faith." Enraptured by this fanciful theory, M. Kenan bids "reason" begone. "Presume not," he observes, "to apply thy cold analysis to this masterpiece of idealism and of love. If Philosophy gives up the attempt to console this poor race of men, betrayed by fate let madness approach and put her hand to the task. Where is the sage who has ever given such joy to the world as the possessed wora,n--Ilaiy of Magdalen ?" This is the kind of decoction with which M. Renan has been dosing French youth, to the detriment of their moral and spiritual welfare. What but evil could have been expected from such a hotbed of fatuity and insanity ? Well, indeed, has it been remarked that a God Pan, who developed himself in the blundering and ridiculous way supposed by M. Renan, would quickly "set people thinking whether he were a God at all or did not need some better inter- preters, at least, who would credit him with an honest walk and conversation along the highroad of nature and health, instead of tracking his cloven footsteps among the devious by-ways of disease. It would be a radically ill exchange if we were to give up the suparnatural Christ for an infra-natural one. To retort Hume's argument upon himself, it is far more consonant to prob- ability that philosophers should err than that the world should have been regenerated by myth- bewildered fishermen and hystericd Magdalens, while Ged was fas it were) asleep and suffered disease and error to steal a march upon Him for the endless benefit of the human racs." This" fifth gospel of sentiment and hallucination clearly refutes itself in point of fact and reason. But our fantastic neighbours on the oti.er side of the cliannel are more prone to emotion than logic, and the consequence has been a wholesale secession from the ranks of orthodoxy into pronounced heterodoxy. That the practical and sober English mind should have been so dulled by the. grotesque extravagances of M. Kenan is a subject of astonishment and alarm to many at home as well as to the Breton missionary. When Ecce Homo was published, 15 or 16 years ago, there were protests in the press an.1 condemnations from the pulpit. But, com] ared with "Renanism," Ecce Homo was as water unto wine. Yet the interdicts against the Frenchman and his Galilean idyll are very few and very far between, and Englishmen and women have been thronging to hear him. Eu^ely the Christianity of England is growing much less robust. We in Wales, how. ever, are- foitunately exempt from this imputa- tion. The word of God—verhum Dei-is here still the universal standard of belief. And come what may though the winds blow and the rains fall—thus entrenched we as a people need not fear our fortress is firm and impregnable.
WELSH NOTES Ft!OM~AMERICA.
WELSH NOTES Ft!OM~AMERICA. [Br ADFYFR.] The forthcoming election of President con- tinues the absorbing theme of discussion in the United States. Garfield is the chosen of the Welsh population, and every ikerva is being strained to secure his triumphant return. Should Hancock, the rival candidate, be successful Southern ex-slave dealers are, says the Drych confident that their outstanding claims will be speedily seltled. The nature of their "little bills" may be gathered from the subjoined affi- davit of a notary public, residing at Georgia :— Before me personally came Isaac M. Marsh, a resident of Savannah, Georgia, who, being duly. sworn, deposeth and saith he was in possession win ¡met the lawful owner of the following named slaves at the time (hey were emancipated and made free by the United States Government, to wit 1 v.oman, Sarah, aged 15, 1 1 woman, Ellen, 35, and four children from 3 to 12 age, 5 1 womau, Ann, acre 40, and four children from 3 to 14 age, 5 1 man, Charles, age about 40, 1 1 woman, Ellen, his wife, age about 60, 1 1 woman, Isabella, aged about 18, 1 1 woman, Rhino, age about 59, 1; 1 man, Jim, age about 63, 1; total, 16. Eight thousand dollars-is the estimated value of the flesh, blood, and bones of these 16 human beings, that is to iay, 500 dollars a head. Mr Marsh is generous enough not to make any charge for their tools, or probably he has Hppraised them at a cent each, and includes the 16 ceuts in the 8,000 dollars. America is agitated to its veiiest social depths- and these we know are muddy enough—by the ap- proaching political conflict. Democrats and Ke- publicans are at each other like "cats and dogs," and personalities are the orier of the day. "A change is wanted," shouted a Democratic orator at a recent public meeting. "If you changed that dirtv shirt of yours it would do you no harm," replied one of his satiric antagonists. Dr. Parry (Aberystwith) has created a remark- ably good impression amongst his fellow-country- men across the water. Both his compositions and his concerts are universally eulogised. Domestic servants are at a great discount in Massachussets. There is alio a great scarcity of female factory workers in the same State. Girls earn 40 dollars a mouth at shoe shops, and in silk establishments the wages paid average from 15 to 20 dollars weekly. A short while ago an old woman died at Virginia and left her property to her three daughters. The eldest daughter was bequeated 3,000 dollars, the second daughter 2.000 dollars, and the youngest daughter an old arm chair. In the cushion of this chair, however, v% as discovered 4,000 dollars. =- Strikes and strifes are too frequently synony- mous terms at Houtzdale, Pa. The colliers wete "out" several days and other hands were employed. An "understanding" was subsequently arrived at between the masters and the old hands, and the latter resumed work. But the intrusion of the strangers was still bitterly resented, and on the first pay-night after the settlement two of them were shot. A young Welshman, George Evans by name, and sn Englishman, are suspected of having committed the murder, and they have been arrested. Welsh settlers at Houtzda'e are much enraged with the local medical men. Thomas Evans, an emigrant from Bonthendy, near Llanelly, Car- marthen, has, they say, been brutally and fatally maltreated by tlie_facultv. He was suffering from gravel, and they, instead of giving hiin medicine to cure his ailment, performed upon him a surgical operation, aud left him to bleed to death.

CRICKET.
CRICKET. THE AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN v. PLAYERS OF ENGLAND. On Monday, at Bradford, this in portant con- test was commenced, in the presence of a large number of spectators. The weather, with tue exception of o.' e shower, was fine, but very cold. Spofforth, Bar,nerman, and light were unable to play for the Australian", so that they had only 10 men. The Australians won the toss and remained at the wickets the whole of the day, scoritig 183. Hoyle was top scorer with a hard-hit. but very flukey innings of 69. By far the best cricket was shown bv Jarvis. Four wickets fell with the total at 79. When stumps were drawn the score sto d as under AUSTRAL'AKS. First Innings. I SECOD ELEVEN WITH 13ATS.-A match under this title was played at Swansea on Saturday in the presence of a large number of spectators, ending in a victory for the first eleven by J8 runs on the first iunings. For the wielders of the axehelves Gwynne made 29 in dashing style he met the ball on the pitch, and made some capital drives. Walker compiled 14 run, Some members of the second eleven bowled their fastest, and sacrificed for.pace straightuess and pitch. The innings of the first eleven created much amusement. Any chance of defence was impossible, it was merely a case of hit or miss. The second eleven could do little with the bowling of Bennett, the Swansea professional, except Hurrop.wl o played capitally, and was run out when well set. The fielding of both sides was indifferent; E. M. Jones missed three eaiy chances of stumping. Score :—First eleven, 70 runs second eleven, 52 runs.
TAFF VALE CLUB v. PENARTH…
TAFF VALE CLUB v. PENARTH CLUB. To the Editor of the SOUTH WALES DAILY NEWS. SIR,-In your report of the cricket match-Taff Vale Club v. Penarth Club-it was stated that the small scores made were accounted for by the bad light. In common fairness to MrJ. P. Jones the light had nothing whatever to do with his score, he having been given out by the Taff Vale umpire as leg before wicket from a ball bowled round the wicket. As Mr Jones is acknowledged to be one of the best cricketers in the Principality this gave great dissatisfaction to the Penarth team. Several of the members of the home team allowed that it was a mistake on the part of the umpire, as the ball did not pitch straight. It should also be mentioned that it was only the twelfth man on the Taff Vale side who made any stand against the Penarth bowling—11 being out for 27 runs. The Penarth team only fielded 11 men.—I am, &c., R. PROCTOR, Captain of the Penarth team.
