THE CAMBRIAN.
THE CAMBRIAN. SWANSEA, FitIDAY, OCT. 19. Arrived at Swansea,—Lord Grey, Hon. W. B. Grey, General Sir Hussey Vivi.ni, Mr. "Edwards, Mr. Savours, Mr. and Mrs. Markham, Mr. Nicholl, Mr. W. Nich.oll, jun. Lieut. G. Brereton, R. N. Mr. Hill, Capt. and Mrs. George Jones, Mr N. Wood, Mr. W. Vaugban, Rev. R. Michell, Mr. J. J. Guest. Mr. Wyndhatn Lewis, M. P. Rev. J. M. 'elc. i Trahern, Mr. Mcyriek. Mr. Williams, Mr. T. Thomas, Mr, Basset', Mrs. Hall, Mr. Bucklaml, Mr. Cook, Mr. J. T. Bassett, Mr. Baillie, Rev. S. Davies, Mr. and Mrs. Baring, Mr.Kvans.&.c.&.c. The I>AU on Wednesday night last, at the New Public Rooms in Swansea, displayed an assemblage seldom surpassed in number or brilliancy, and the merry dance was maintained with spirit till a late hour. The Glamorganshire Autumnal Quarter Sessions were held this week in Swansea, before William Nicholl, Esq. and a very numerous bench of highly r;1 respectable Magistrates. The business terminated on Wednesday evening, but no conviction was marked by any extraordinary importance. Wm. Morgan, for stealing copper from the Dowlais Iron Company, and Wm. Robert, for an assault, were sentenced to be imprisoned six months; aud Alex. Thomas, for assaulting Sheriff's officers in the execution of their duty, three months. Stewart Cover!ey,who had been convicted by a Magistrate of unlawfully hawking tef, appealed against the decision, but unsuccessfully, as the conviction was confirmed, with a penalty of lot. and forfeiture of the tea. We were disappointed at not having received in due time an account of the late Races at Cardiff, for insertion in one of our recent papers a circum- stance which we trust will not occur in future years, We, however, understand that the horses of Mr. Jones, of Fonmon Castie, Mr. Pryse, Mr. Brathwaite, Mr. Jackson, and others, were the win- ners of the principal Plates and Sweepstakes; but, in consequence of the weather and the deep state of the course, the several heats were not particu- larly well contested. The ground was daily thronged with elegant and fashionable company, wbilst theordil/aries, bitlis, and breakfasts, were most nofnerousiy and respectably attended.- ¡ Abollt, one hundred and eighty ladies and gentle- men of the first distinction in Glamorganshire and the adjoining counties, attended the public break- fast given by Sir C. Cole, the County Member. The 1 affability and assiduous attention of the Stewards, Colonel Morgan, of Landough Castle, and John Nicholl, Esq. of Merthyr-mawr, were eminently conspicuous, and contributed much to the hilarity of the meeting. Wyridham Lewis, Esq. of Green Meadow, M. P. and F. Fredricks, Esq. ot Cadoxton Lodge, are nominated Stewards for the next year. Monmouth Races.—The fineness of the weather last week, so long wished throughout the kingdom, drew to this scene-of pleasure a company not be- fore exceeded at any time either in rank or fortune, including all the landed characters in the county, with many others in the surrounding district; and the different plates afforded great interest to, the sporting world. 'I he inns were crowded to over- flowing and the balls at the Beaufort Arms:had to boast of 300 characters of rank and fortune.— The sweepstakes and ptsteon the first day were won by Mr. Willis's Etkelindq, and Mr. Flemming's Blandford; and the two fifties on the second, by Mr. Da\o Victorinc, and Mr. Jones's Ethelin.da.; On the night of the 4th inst. as Mr. Richards, auctioneer, Carmarthen, was riding home trom Llandiio,'some person wh6 was driving furiously, came in contact with his horse, near Cothy bridge, by which he was thrown "off, land lay senseless on the road, in which situation tie was left by the per- son who caused this misfortune, without rendering him the least assistance He was shortly after. wards found, having had his leg fractured, and otherwise much injured. Last week, a fine new vessel, called The Char- lotte," was launched from the building-yard of Messrs. Buckle and Davies, at Chepstow. She en- tered the water in a style of elegance highly grati- fying to the spectators. ol On the morning of Friday the 5th inst. the beach near Hayle Bir was found strewed with the wreck of a vessel which had been lost, with all her crew, in the storm on the proceeding night. From several papers that have been washed on shore, it appears that the vessel was a French chasse-maree from Nantes, bound to Cardiff in ballast. It may not be generally known, that, according to the 26th section of the 42d Geo. 3d, cap. 90, it is imperative upon all occupiers of houses, as well as constables, to insert in their returns the names of all persons between the ages of 18 and 45, those claiming to be exempt from serving in the militia, as well as those liable to serve, and that a deficiency in heighth forms no ground of exemption, unless the person so claiming to be exemm. swears he is uot worth 1001. ie timntr at S'lturdav '-vst, a tnasf j splendid entertainment was given at Monmouth, on imi- tation by the Gentlemen of !lie County, to his'Grace the Duke of Beaufort; which was attended bv Lords William and Granville Somerset, Siis C. Morgan and S. Fludyer, Messrs Leivii, of St. Piene and Lalitiflio, and gentlemen of the first respectability of Mohmduth, Abergavenny, Newport, Uiik, Chepstow, and every part of the countv and neighbourhood, more numerous than had ever before met in that town. After giving thetegutarcoustitutiona) toasts, Rd. Lewis, Esq. of Lautillio, the Chairman, rose and observed, that the Duke of Beaulort having done them the honour to accept their invitation to dinner, he begged leave to propose his health, unci to assuiu hiiu of their most sincere respect for his virtues and character.—His Grace returned thanks by stating, that tie words could express the satisfaction and gratitude he felt for the compliment now paid him, by so numerous and respectable a meeting; and that he should be most happy on all occasions to promote, to the utmost of his power, the interests of the county of Monmouth. On the healths of the different gentlemen being drank throughout the evening, each took the oppor- tunity of expressing his high respect for their Noble Visitor.-Sir C. Morgan said. that in the characters of husband, father, and landlord, his Grace might well be proposed as a model to the nation; and on Sir Chailes's health being drank a second tiiwe, os Recorder of Newport, he stated, that a town Lad been established there bv his Grace s exertions, in obtaining a confirmation (not a grant) of their ancicllt light uf exemption trom-the-Coal Tax, mid by which a coal-trade had been founded which supported a thousand, nay, he niiglit add, ten thousand persons.— His Grace and Lord Granville Somerset had made Newport n free port; it was true, continued S;r Charles, that he had rendered his feeble assistance, but to his Grace the merit was eminently due.-Cojouel Wood, M.P. for Biecon, observed, that whilst other persous of fortune went to couiitiiesi his (irzice remained at home, to spend his money among his neighbours but that fie (the Col.) did not complain of these wanderers, as it would prove to them that England was at last the best country in the world. He cordially concurred in the respect, that duj shewn to his Grace, whose hearTund iiinid were, in etcry thing that was respectable and dignified, truly English; that he was certaifi the manly spirit of his Noble Ancestor of Ragland, whose citstle had made the best defence for, and on whose walls the fing of his Sovereign was last waved, would continue to flow with bisbloud through his illustrious descendants and th.sit he did not doubt the in- habitants of this county would at all times cPI1,jnue to assist tiiem in supporting the Constitution of iheir country.— Much more, personally respectful to his Grace, was said in the course of the evening; and a most agreeable day was extended to a late hour.lt is with the greatest r«-gret that we add a very melancholy sequel to this account. The Rev. Mr. Rumsey, of Trelleck, who received the benefices ot Langtiiiiiidor, in Breconshire. IIlld Chapel Hill, imme- diately above Tintern Abbey, from his Grace (and where he had established with success one of the first National Schools in that neighbourhood), had attended Monmouth Races: tie weal to Bristol on Friday and on Saturday morning was returning on horseback to the dinner, and had morning was returning on horseback to the dinner, and had just entered the boat at the Old Passage, when he ex claimed, "lam very sick and expired instantly. This I sad intelligence was made known in the course of the evening. on which several of bis relations Ilud fricnds I present immediately withdrew. He was in the prime of" life, highly valued and regarded by every cue, nnd has left six children to increase their sorrow in the recent loss of their mother! I On Saturday se'nnight, David Watkins, of the parish of Lanvrechfa, Monmouthshire, was com- mitted to the county gaol, by J. H. Moggridge, E q. on suspicion of having taken and carried away cer- tain household goods, the property of W. Ilowell. from his dwelling-house in Lanvrechfa aforesaid. Howell is tenant to Watkins, who, it is supposed, took away the goods of Ilpweli in his absence, and without notice, in order to secure his rent—a most illegal and oppressive practice, not unfrequently resorted to, but which it is hoped the example made in this case will put an effectual stop to.- Watkins was subsequently admitted to bail, We feel it necessary to call the sfrious attention of potatoe-grovvers to the preservation of their crops against the sudden occurrence of an early and unexpected night-frost, which is but too pos- sible at this advanced season, in the hope that they may profit by this timely hint. The celebraled Princess Carahoo has returned from America to her native country. At Ross fair, on Thursday, although there was a good exhibition of fleshy and useful beasts, the shew of cattle was not, upon the whole, numerous; but there were few purchasers, and the stock went at reduced prices. The sheep pens were better supplied, but the sale was equally dull; and the shew ot horses was very indifferent. Best cheese sold from 52s. to 56s. and second from 40s. to 46s. per cwt. Welsh butter, in tubs, averaged from Its. to 12s. per stone. Shrewsbury fair, on Tuesday and Wednesday, denoted a general stagnation in the sale of farming produce, with the exception of butler. Oil the for- mer day, there was the finest show of sheep, and the greatest number ever known fat ones sold at from 4 1. to 5d. per lb.; stores were onsa)eab!e.— Pigs were numerous the general prices were from t) n 3d. to 4d. per lb. Ou the lullowing day the supply of cattle was too excessive for the demand; fat beasts obtained 4J.d. to 5 £ d.—Skim cheese fetched from 28s. to 35s. per cwi. middling dairies from 40s. to 45s. and best from 46s, to- 55s. per rwt. There was a great quantity on hand oil Thursday morning, which was sold at a reduction nf from 4s. to 5s. per cwt. The average price of butter was; from 8|d. to Htd. per lb.; but a few lots fetched as high as 9d. per lb. and all was sold.—Bacon, from 51-d. to 6d. per 11). hams, 7d. per lb. I will thank you to inform me iti your next. if the report which has just cummed to Bristol is true, that your Au- thorities in Swansea have discovered, that, if it is de- stroyed as a place of trade, it will make a delightful bathing piace it so, [ assure you I will (with, luupy others of my friends) pay you a visit every summer.
