Every district is called upon to provide a given number of veteran females, whs in the event of being wanted, m.y be immediately distributed in.thevse"- veral hospitals, as laundivsses, nurses. &c. Capt. G. Hewetsc n, of 'h • r I battalion of the Oth Foot, has been triel b- a Court Martial, and found guilty of over^h *r_» the regiment for- va- rious articles of doathing,&:c,; of Unfairly charg- ing carriage on sun i^y n c > of taking from the regimental stores'four yards of cloth; and also of having produced for signature a false ac-j count, of the expenditure of the half yearly ord- nance allowance. The Court sentences him to be dismissed the service, which has been confirmed by his Majesty.—The Court o.presseci its regret at-1 discharging this painful duty, on account of the former good conduct of that gentleman. Sir Robert Barlow is appointed Commissioner c; the Dock-yard at Chatham, in- the room of the late C. Hope, LSD. Mr. Wait'mnan gave notice-pf the following mo- tton in the Common Council on Thursday' last, i which he intended to move at the -next Court;—! "'fiiat an humble and diui'ful Adfiress and Peti- j tion be presented to his Majesty,•• expressing their I grief and astonishment at the extraordinary and disgraceful Convention, lately entered into by the Commanders of his Majesty's forces in Portugal, and the Commander of the I'tench army at Lisbon, pravtrig his Majesty to institute such an inquiry inio this dishonourable and unprecedented trans- action, as will lead to the, discovery and punisb- rn-mt of tiiose, by whose misconduct and incapa- city the cause of this country and its allies has been so shamefully sacrificed." Inquests — An inquisition was held on Wednes- day on eleven of the unfortunate sufferers at the late fire in Covent-Gardeu, before A. Gel], 'Esq. Coroner .for Westminster. From the evidence of the principal witnesses it appeared, that the fire- men, and others who perished, had, been e,m ployed in'endeavouring to extinguish the flames at the room called the Apollo, which had fallen in upon them. It also appeared that the surmises which had gone as powder, were entirely unfounded, there never be- ing more gun-powder kept in the Theatre than was necessary for the consumption of a single night.— The Jury accordingly returned a Verdict that the following pers'ons, viz. R. Cadger, J. Holmes, J. Hunt, W. Jones, J. Evans, J. Crabb,T. Mead, W. -Whigglesworth, J. Kilby, and T. James, antl two others (names unknown), in all twelve persons, were killed Accidentally by the falling of the Apollo-room, at Covent-Garden Theatre?'—Ano- ther inquest was afterwards held at Bartholomew's Hospital, on the. bodies of sii others who also pe-, rished at this conflagration. The evidence was nearly, the same, and the verdict accidental death.— Several bodies are supposed to be still under the ruins, from the number of people missing. It appears, from the best information tnatcan be obtained, that the Proprietors of Covent-Gar- den Theatre must be losers to the amount of 60 or 70,0001. Handel's celebrated organ, supposed to be worth 1000 guineas, and which that celebrated composer gave by his will to Covent-Garden Theatre, and was only heard in the Oratorios, is completely de- stroyed. A subscription has been opened for the relief of the sufferers. The plan of a new Theatr;, it is said, has already: been submitted to tlie Proprietors, arp! accepted 1/ it will be insulated, and the stage will lace the South. The Grand Opera at. iLris was consumed by firf, in 1784, and, in 94 dtiys a new Theatre, now stand- ing, was erected. On the 94th day an Opera was performed, and continued, without intermission, from that time to the present, Sundays not ex- cepted. That Theatre is situated.011 the Boulevard rill Temple. The sixe n)ay be estimated by this fact, that 500 persons havebcen employed as actors, seene-shiIters, &c. for years together. Thus I in three calendar months, the Theatre was com- pletely re-established, after a catastrophe, similar to thai ofCoveiU-Gardea. •'ue I in a, Dublin Evening Paper, that the 1 jo 1 n solution has been agreed to by the R.(H!ia.!iCath!:iiePrc!a.tes..t.ssen)bIed at present in > Tbat the Roman Catholic Prelates pledge themselves to adhere to the rule by which they have been hitherto uniformly guided, namely,' to only snch pBrsons as are of iwimpeachjible loyalty and peaceable cou- dur■•/■ Government have contracted fot* ':w,oOO suits of the Spanish Patriots. A writ of enquiiy has lately been executed be- fore the-Sheriff of Oxfordshire, in which Mr. Jo- seph Bowerm iu, of Etisham, was plaintiff, and —— Smith, defendant. The action was brought to recover a compensation in damages for the in-, jury the plaintiff bad; .sustained by tlie brutal I treatment which the defendant, .who was a carter 1 employed to drive a team, hid exercised over one I of ihe-.plaintiil's horses.
