Augustus Webber Esq. J George W. Pinnoek Esq. ONICB—14, CHATHAM PLACE, BLACKPBIABS BBIDGB (E C) THIS Company is formed under the law which limits the JL liability of shareholders to the amount of their respective chares, and has for its objects— 1. The gradual supply of steam communication in connec- tion with railways and canals between such ports of the United Kingdom and the Continent, where trading operations are now restricted and carried on by sailing vessels, which are quite un- suited to the present necessities of commerce. 2. The interchange of freight and passage with existing steam shipping companies and private shipowners, upon the principle of through fares and rates. So The substitution of coal, iron, minerals, and other heavy goods for freight, and consequent avoidance of the prevalent custom of shipping ballast for that purpose. 4. The establishment of complete accessories on land for the accommodation of passengers, and for warehousing, delivering, and forwarding goods. 6. The towing of vessels in or out of port at required. No department of commerce illustrates the advantages of associated capital with more uniform success than MERCANTILE ■AVIOATION. Our increasing trade both at home and abroad, especially of such ports as possess railway or canal communica. tion, necessitates a corresponding increase of our steam ship- ping; this can be effectively attained only by capital and re- sources beyond the ordinary reach of private enterprise. The Alliance Steam Navigation Company has therefore been formed generally to meet this growing demand. The great delay and loss of time incurred by sailing vessels in consequence of the tides and contrary winds would alone justify the establishment of a special line of coasting steamers but the importance of this undertaking, and the certainty of its success is further demonstrated by the circumstance of merchants and shippers requiring regu- lar and accelerated communication between the several ports for transit of heavy goods and perishable articles. The traffic of various places has been brought nnder the notice of the directors, and several profitable lines have been suggested. Amongst them may be mentioned— From f Newport to Waterford and Cork. if Cardiff to Southampton and London. „ Swansea to Milford and Liverpool. Also others having continental ports as their termini. The enormous increase of trade between the above and in. termediate porta (being nearly double that of the year 1850), imperatively demands the acceleration of traffic by screw steam vessels of sufficient power only to give them the advantage over sailing ships in point of time and punctuality of arrival and departure. In the first instance the Directors have resolved to place two steamers, one between Newport and Waterford, and the other between Newport and Cork. The traffic re- turns fully justify the belief that a very profitable re- turn on the capital employed on these first lines may be calculated upon.I The directors propose commencing opera- tions so soon as in their judgment a sufficient number of Shares has been subscribed for. As the traffic and communication become developed, additional steamers will be purchased, and other lines opened. The articles of association give to the company the power, in addition to the more usual business of shipowners and traders, to open a credit maritime; and from this branch alone, which will comprise advances by way of loan upon cargoes shipped by the company's vessels or consigned to them for freight, large profit. may be realized. The Shares are payable in four instalments of 6s., at intervals of not less than three months between each pay. ment. Interest at the current rate allowed on all sums paid in advance. Calculations have been made, showjpg the application of the Capital which it is proposed to raise in the first instance, and the estimated profit to be derived therefrom. The cal- culations show on these lines a return of twenty per cent. upon the Capital. Prospectuses and forms of applications for Shares, may be obtained at the office of the Company, 14, Chatham.place, Blackfriars Bridge, London (E.G.), of Messrs. J The traffic to and from Newport, Waterford, and Cork, and intermediate ports, exceeds 300,000 tons annually, and be. tween Cardiff, Southampton, and London, 150,000 tons; to each of these places the average rate charged per ton is seven shillings.
