Proeee'lings were commenced l;y the "Cooler-1 gr-'nig solos 011 the raoiith-oro-an, a performance which elicited considerable applause from the Rhondda Valleyites. Then came the serious business of the afternoon. Fred Isen-ee and Mike .Sullivan opened the sparring entertain- nicnt with a three-round bout that gave the utmost satisfaction. Isensee has sparred with some of the best liffht-weight-s in America, and proved in each case his claims to clevcnu-es- The bout between .him and Sullivan wa.s of the most scientific order, and there wa.s practi- cally nothing1 to choo--e between the men. Sulli- van. who had the pull in the weight, was, per- haps, a trifle the smarter with his right. Red- mond Coleman and Collins provided another interesti'i? encounter, whilst Forster and St. John were the last pair preceding the bout of the afternoon. The spar between O'Brien and the "Cooler" was certainly of the most scientific description, each of them hardly placing a glove on the other. THE COLONIAL-HALL, CARDIFF. Ail tHo boxers" enumerated above rendered their services, although the show was opened by the musical entertainment of Craig, whose solos en the mouth-organ and plantation dancing provoked the most enthusiastic applause. The conclusion of the performance was a two-round spar between O'Brien and the Cooler." followed by a similar number of rounds between the Cooler" and his trainer. Professor Dennis Butler. Too much praise cannot be given to the last-mentioned gentleman, who, as ma,ster of the ceremonies, manoeuvred the crowds both at Pontypridd and Cardiff in the most happy fashion. Craig expressed the utmost satisfac- tion with his reception in the district, an I reiterated his intention of making- a fortnight's tour through the Rhondda Valley in the near future.
FALL DOWN A LIFT.j
FALL DOWN A LIFT. Sad Accident to a Cardiff Lad at the Ice Stores. On Monday afternoon a lad named David Ellycott, of 23, Havelock-street, CanhiF, met with a shocking accident, which, it is feared, will have a fatal termination. The lad. who was in the employ of the Cardiff Fish and Company, about two p.m. was ordered by his employer to carry some pheasants to the ice company's stores, i:i Penarth-road. He did not return, and inquiries were instituted as to his whereabouts, without result. The nsnager of the fish an-' poultry conpany at eight p.m., fearing that the lad had met with an accident, drove down to the Ice Company's premises, and, together with the storekeeper, commenced a search for the lad, who they subsequently found at the bottom of the lift well. which communicates with the several floors of the storage sheds- The poor fellow had evidently fallen a distance of about 30ft. When extri- cated it was found that lioth of his legs were fractured, and that he lia-d received serious bodily injuries. ] (e^vas conveyed to the Cardiff Infirmary and detained. c. «—<««—.mim—i jpiaiimm Infirmary and detained. • c. 1 «—<««—.mim—i i jpiaiimm

The Exchange Telegraph Company learns that an official announcement of the retirement of the Commander-in-Chief may be expected as soon as the Treasury has sanctioned a special super- annuation allowance to his Royal Highness, in regard to which objections have been raised. NOVEMBER HEAVENS.
NOVEMBER HEAVENS. Something More About the Receding PJafiet Mars. Most unfortunately the opposition of Mars was attended in Cardiff and South Wales with unfavourable weather: .111 fact, not- for muny weeks have the skies been serene enough for satisfactory observations. Let us hope, how- ever, tha.t the rest of the vear will witness "n improvement. Mars is still well visible though receding from the earth and (retting daily gradually smaller. I append two sketches: the first a rough reproduction of a drawing by M. Antouiadi, taken by aid of M, 1 lainmarion s telescope, and showing a, number of canals. In this sketch the phase of the planet is strongly marked. The second sketch (taken near opposition) is by an amateur telescopist who lives a few miles out of Car- diff, and shows the same side of the planet as M. Antoniadi's drawing. Mars will be near the Moon on the evening of November 11. As Mars is receding so Jupiter is taking up a favourable position for the amateur, being well placed high above the eastern horizon by eleven o'clock in the evening. Jupiter's belts and four larger moons are easily seen with a comparatively small telescope: not so the fifth satellite, which is amongst the most difficult of telescopic obects. Its discoverer- Professor Barnard, is still studying it attentively. From a host of careful measurements made with the Lick telescope he is confident that the satellite is not brighter than a .star of the thirteenth rriagn ti;dc. which, of course, accounts for it lemmniing so long unknown to 'astronomers. Its sidereal period appears to be llh. 57min. 2?sec., and its diameter from north to south 75 miles, and at the equator 56 miles. Of the other planets mention must lie made of Mercury, which on the afternoon of tlie !0th passes a. small black dot across the disc r,f the sun. L nfort-unately. the phenomenon only commences in this neighbourhood half an hour or so before sunset; but in America at can be excellently observed. The Moon is full on the 13th: new on the 27 th. The annual meeting of the British -Astrono- mical Association, the leading amateur soeietv in Great Britain, was held a few days ago. when Mr. E. Walter Maunder (of Greenwich Observatory) was elected to the presidential chair. The society has 879 members, eleven of whom are resident in Wales. Many provincial towns have astronomical societf.es, some of the larger of which are am- liated to thp. B.A.A. Several local amateurs and others have suggested the formation of such a soeietv a.t Cardiff, and these who would care to identify themselves with the movement are requested to communicate with the writer, at 41, Hamilton-street. r MASTER OF THE TEMPLE. Canen Aiiiger Pays Tribute to the Dean of Llandaff. There was a crowded congregation r.t tlie Temple Church the other morning (says a London correspondent) to welsome Canon Amger on his first appearance as Master of the Temple. He delivered an eloquent sermon on the power of the pulpit, and at the close paid a touching tribute to Dean Vaughan and his 25 years' service in that place. Speaking of the late Master's intel- lectual attainments, Canon Ainger referred c e-r to his scholarship, his mastery of the Greek Testament, his unfailing freshness of thought and treatment, and his euphomstic grace, re- calling his far-off relative and namesake Henry Yaughan. In dealing with his spiri trial gifts attention was called to Dr. "V aughan s deep understanding of the human heart, his singular power to read the con- soitnee., and his moderation, which last, said Canon Aingier, incurred the penalty if penalty it were—that all extreme men passed lightij by and no party journal ever spoke the •ippla.uding word. Smart Sherlock Holmes, ------------…
Smart Sherlock Holmes, I*- DR. DOYLE'S DETECTIVE REDIVIVUS. HVan Clupper" Tells How He Recovered the "Swag" in a Welsh Jewel Robbery. lvhcii I entered the club-room a gentleman in the far corner raised his head from the paper lie was reading, and glanced quickly at me. His peculiar facial expression was fami- liar to me, aad I knew the man in an instant. It was Sherlock Holmes, looking as shrewd and as pleasant and as full of quiet eaiergv as ever. "Why. Hoimes, old fpUow." I remarked, -d. when our formal greeting was orer, "I thought you were dead. Didn't Dovle kill vou after all?" "Truth of it is," said Holmb. with a good- humoured twinkle in his eye;-he got a bit tired of writing up my experiences month after mcuth, and he told me he was going to kill me. I gave Doyle full discretion in the matter, and he made me fall over a precipice. I did have a nasty fall, it is true, but I wasn't absolutely killed. I have orten told you I wai, a wonder- ful amateur trapazist in college, and my ape. like agility served me m good stead on this occasion. I caught hold of the branch of a tree. This broke my fall, and I ma.naged to clamber down the rocks to a place of safety." "A,;lcl what bring-s you into South Wales?" I asked him. "This is a return visit. I came down here some months ago to unravel the Penarth Gorilla Mystery, and did so within a few hours. al. though the public never knew whom to thank for the elucidation of that mystery. Your chief has some good wine and cigars at Cwrt-v- vil," continued Holmes, his face lighting up with pleasant memories, "and we spent two or three jolly evenings together." "To what interesting circumstance are we in- debted for this, your second visit?" I in- quired. 1 have been spending a rather long holiday in North and South Wales," replied Holmes, and have just finished a ljt-tle job which has not only brought me credit but also enabled me to pay off an old score." Ha. ha," said I, smelling "copy." ''just the very thing. I'm out for the evening, and nothing would deligh,t me more than to have one of those inimitable yams of yours. led me all about -it,, Holmes. I'm sure the story will be worth hearing." "Well, ats I've also got the-evening to 20. through somehow, I don't mind if 1 do." said Holmes, evidenntly forgetting thai I wa" a newspaper man. Then. taking a cigarette out of his well-stocked case, he slowly ht it, and. settling himself comfortably in his cosy arm chair, he began. "Perhaps I ought to explain to you at the beginniinig tliajc the detoeive fofpce of the kingdom is.. to use a vulgar expression, 'dead nuts' on me, and you will, therefore, not be surprised when I tell you that a reccm- mmMncMwtit' Mtuaiee & 11 jw-mbei- of Parliament to a Welsh .heaJ.e:¡"table that I should be engaged to unravel the mystery of a big jewel robbery some time ago in the Principality was rejected in a manner that 1- considered' to be TIIÓ, and. offensive;, the terms of the letter written by the head- constable to the M.P. being that I might be all very well in the pages of the 'Strand Magazine,' but they were not going to en- trust the unravelling of an important matter like that ot a big jewel rohberv in every- day life to an amateur. 'An Amateur,' fancy t-ii at Sherlock Holmes an amateur! 1 am not revengeful a.s a general thing, Clupper, but I felt the rebuff keealy, and I registered a, vow, in the presence of m'f íriond Dode. who was dining with me when, the M.P. sent me the head-constable's letter, that ere many months had passed I would compel that head-constable to publicly pay tribute even to mv 'am.tf9.1riôh' ahiiitie-s. I have had my revenge, and feel peaceful, calm, and happy when I think of it. This was: how it came about. A second robbery took place from a, silversmith's shop, and about £ 2i.000 worth of jewellery was found* to have been taken away by the thieves, of whose where.a.bout< the police, in spite of most strenuous efforts, could no, obtain the slightest clue. There was immediately a great huuuub among the people, of the town where the robbery took place, and public meeting8 were held at which reflections were made upon the efficiency of the police force, as this was the second occasion on which the burglars had gone undetected. While this hubbub was -.t i'ts heig'J-it I wrote the head-constable offering him my services, and making the only condition of theiir acceptance an undertaking from him that, in the event of my bringing the thieves to justice or recovering the booty, he should publicly acknowledge mv success. He agreed to the terms, and 1 came down to S-- by the next train. I immediately proceeded to the police-station, got all the detectives before me, and, haying heard their stories, which were. I may remark, lamentably bald, I turned to the head-constable and said, Vou have hit1 1 > e tical of my smart- ness as a prn uid you have ac- cepted my ser-, > Uuys after the bur- glary has heen commuted. During that time you have had no tra-ee or clue of either the thieves or the missing articles. Therefore, to vou the task I urn undertaking seems hopeless. But Sherlock Holmes has never yet completely failed, and when he lays his head unon the pillow to-night it will be with the conscious- ness that he has met with some measure of success.' The head constable gazed incre-, dulously at me, and the faces of the detectives wore sarcastic expression*. 'I see, you think' I am fooling you,' I said: 'but Sherlock Holmes has a reputation and he is urepared to stand or fall by what he has said.' I wanted to make the thing as mysterious as possible, for my own prestige's sake, and extracted a promise from the head-constable not to ques- tion me as to my methods of work if I suc- ceeded in my undertaking. I then left the police office, and mingled with the crowd in the public street. I had arranged to return to the police-station at midnight, and the clock was just striking twelve when I entered the hinwl-t»stable's sanctorum- 'Of course, you have discovered the thieves and recovered the booty V remarked the head-constable, with a, tinge of sarcasm in his voice. 'I have re- covered the booty,' I replied dryly; 'but the thieve*, although discovered, are not likelv to be caught \et awhile. To cut a long story short. I produced the whole of the stolen jewellery, which was returned to its owner. Vi itn reference to the thieves, I convinced the head-constable that there was no doubt about their having managed to pa«f right un-'e" the. noses of the police, and to reach New York in safety. The recovery of the stolen property was regarded b,- the public as a big achieve- ment, and my revenge. was completed. The 0end-constable came down handsomely, for. in his letter to me. which will in due course be published in the daily journals, 11," not only gives me credit for what I succeeded in doing, but refers to me as the smartest detective in the United Kingdom. Holmes having finished the narrative. leaned back in his chair, and, wrinkling his brow with a self-satisfied air, btjgan rolling another cioa- rette. His case was, as already intimated, well stocked, but lie "rolled" a cigarette, because he usetl to do so in the "Strand Magazine." I watched his quiet, unassuming movement* for a,moment or (two. and then. breaking the -e. silence. said, "lour narrative has been a deeply-interesting one. Holmes, but the most interesting part of it is yet to come. For heaven's sake, relieve mv suspense :l-,d iell me how did you manage to recover the stolen property so quicklv. "Well, old mai)." replied Holmes, with a forced laugh, "as I have retired from "public life since Doyle got tired of n12. 1 don't mind telling you privately, but don't breathe a whisper Oi my explanation to a lining soul. I committed the burglarv myself" "VAN CLUPPER."
