ITHE " COFFEE COOLFR."
THE COFFEE COOLFR." Boxing with O'Brien at Pontypridd and Cardiff, The tour of Frank Craig and Iii" party "n Wales met on the whole with a -lecui';d umount of success. "M;iboa's Day" in the Rhondda wts (.-ertairly a happily-ch:>(;n duu for c-n wds of people put in an appean«ir:« at the Butcher's til' Yard in the afternoo- the s'how g-iveui beinn on all hands voted an unqualified success. Prooeedinps were commenced by the "Cooler" ifT'iiiff solos on the mouth-organ, a performance which elicited considerable applause from the Rhondda Valleyiies. -Then came the serious I !Usi;!ess of the afternoon. Fred Isen-ee and Mike Sullivan opened the sparring entertain- meut with a three-round bout that gave the utmost satisfaction. Isensee ha.s sparred with some of the best li^ht-wei^hts in America., and proved in each case his claims to cleverness- The bout between him and Sullivan was of the most scientific order, and there was practi- cally nothinpr to choose between the men. Sulli- van, who had the pull in the weight, was. per- haps. a trifle the smarter with his right. Red- mond Coleman and Collins provided another iiiteresti'ia: encounter, whilst Forster and St. John were the last pair preceding the bout of the afternoon. The spar between O'Brien and the "Cooler" was certainly of the most scientific description, each of them hardly placing a glove on the other. THE COLONIAL-HALL, CARDIFF. Hie proceedings nt the Co!onial-hall, Cardiff, practically followed cut rlie program4re of the Fontypridd entertainment. All the boxers enumerated above rendered their services, although the show was i-peued by the musical entertainment of Craig, whose solos on tho mouth-organ »nd p-wiiattoa dancingr provoked the most enthusiastic applause. The conclusion of the performance was a two-round spnr between O'Brien and the Cooler," followed by a similar number of rounds between the "Cooler" and liis trainer, Professor Dennis Butler. Too much praise cannot- be given to the last-mentioned gentleman, who, as master of the. ceremonies, manoeuvred the crowds both at Pontypridd and Cardiff in the most happy fashion. Craig expressed the utmost satisfac- tion with his reception in the district, a.o 1 reiterated his intention of making a. fortnight's tour through the Rhondda Valley in the near future.
FALL DOWN A LIFT.
FALL DOWN A LIFT. Sad Accident to a Cardiff Lad at the Ice Stores. On Monday afternoon a lad named David I'llycott, of 23, Havelock-street, C.-irdrtT, met with a shocking accident, which, it is feared, will have a fatal termination. The lad, who was in the employ of the Cardiff Fish and l'odtry Company, about two p.m. was ordered by his employer to carry some pheasants to the ice company's stores, in Penarth-rond. He did not return, and inquiries were instituted as to his whereabouts, without remit. The n .onager of the li-li an. poultry eonpany at eight p.m.. fearing that the lad had met with an accident, drove down to the Company's premises, and, together with the storekeeper, commenced a search for the lad, who they subsequently found at the bottom of the lift well, which communicates with the several floors of the storage sheds- The poor fellow had evidently fallen a distance of about 30ft. When extri- cated it wa.s found that Iroth of his legs were fractured, and that lie had received serious bodily injuries. He"Vas conveyed to the Cardiff Infirmary and detained. C"C"
SOUTH WALES CIRCUIT.
SOUTH WALES CIRCUIT. Barristers to Take Silk in the Coming Year. Our London correspondent writes :-I learn that Mr. John Eldon Banks and Mr. Thomas Terrell are likely to take silk in the early part of the coming- year. Mr. Banks comes of a great legal family. On his father's side he is a descendant of the late Lord Eldon, whilst his mother was a daughter of a late Lord Chief Justice. He is extremely popular on circuit and one of the handsomest men practising at the Bar. Mr- Thomas Terrell will, I understand, devote him- ¡ self to patent work, a branch of the law which he has made peculiarly his own. The South Wales Circuit will be particularly strong in leaders when this change is brought about,

COMMAND OF THE ARMY,
COMMAND OF THE ARMY, Lord Wolseley to Succeed the Duke of Cambridge. The Exchange Telegraph Company learns that an official announcement of the retirement of the Commander-in-Chief may be expected as soon as the Treasury has sanctioned a special super- annuation allowance to his Royal Highness, in regard to which objections have been raised. It is not, however, anticipated that the Duke of Cambridge will leave the Horse Guards before next March. The Exchange Telegraph Company understands also tha.t Lord Wolseley will become chief of the staff at the Army headquarters, Horse; Guards, on the abolition of the office of Commander-in-Chief, and that Lord Roberts will be appointed to tho com- "Rnd of t.he forces ip.. NOVEMBER HEAVENS.
NOVEMBER HEAVENS. Something More About the Receding Planet Mars. Most unfortunately the opjiosit-ion of Mars was attended in Cardiff and South Wales with unfavourable weather: iii fact, not for many weeks have the ski e" been serene enough for satisfactory observations. Let. us hone, how- ever, that the rest- of the year will witness an improvement. Mars is still well visible, though receding from the earth and n-fttino- dailv gradually smaller. I append two sketches,: the first a "OlErh reproduction of a drawing by M. Antoniadi, taken by aid of M. 1< lam ma,ni on s teles, e-o-pe, and showing a number of canals. In this sketch the phase of the planet is strongly marked. The second sketch (taken near opposition) is by an amateur telescopist who lives a few miles out of Car- diff. and shows the same aide of the planet as M. Antomadi's drawing. Mars will be near the Moon on the evening of November 11. As Mara is receding so Jupiter i.s taking ] up a favourable positaon for the amateur, being well placed Ivgh above the eastern horizon by eleven o'clock in the evening. Jupiter's belts r t,, and four larger moons are easily seen with a comparatively small telescope: not so the fifth satellite, which is amount the most difficult of telescopic obects. Its discoverer, Professor Larnard, is still studying it attentively. From a host of careful measurements made with the Lick telescope lie is confident, that the satellite- is not brighter than a star of the thirteenth m.agiii dude, which, orf.eourse, a.ccounts for it lemaiining so long unknown to astronomers, Its sidereal period appears to be llh. 57min. 22,e" and its diameter from north to south 75 miles, and at the equator 56 milex. Of the other planets mention must be mr.de of iVlereuiy, which on the afternoon of the 10th passes ats a small black dot across the disc of the sun. Cnforiunateh-. the phenomenon onlv commenres in this neighbourhood half an hour or so before sunset: but in America it can be excel 1 er i tly observed. The Moon is full on the 13th new on the 27th. The annual meeting of the British Astrono- mical Association, the leading amateur society in G-rea.t Britain, was held a few days ago. when Mr. E. Walter Maunder (of Groenwic-h Obse.rva.toTv) was elected to the. presidential chair. The society ha.s 879 members, eleven of whom are resident in Wales. Many provincial towns have astronomic-*] societies, some of the larger of which :WP affi- liated to the B.A.A. Several local amateurs and others have suggested the formation of such a, society at Cardiff, and those who would care to identify themselves with the movement are requested to communicate with the writer, at 41, Hamilton-street. [MASTER OF THE TEMPLE.
[ MASTER OF THE TEMPLE. Canoii Ainger Pays Tribute to the Dean of LlandafF. There was a crowded congregation at the Temple Church the other morning (says a London correspondent) to welsome Canon Ainger on his first appearance a,s Master of the Temple. He delivered an eloquent sermon on the power of the pulpit, and at the close paid a touching tribute to Dean Vauchan aid his 25 years' servioe in that place. Speaking of the late Master's intel- lectual attainments, Canon Ainger referred his scholarship, his mastery of the Greek testament, his unfailing freshness oj£' thought nd treatment, and his euphonistic grace, re- .aHing his far-off relative and namesake ,ienry Yauglian. In dealing with his epiri- tnal gifts attention was called to Dr. Yaughau s deep understanding of the human heart, his singular power to read the cun- science, and his moderation, which last, said Canon Ainger. incurred the penalty—if penalty it were—that all extreme men passed lightly by and no party journal ever spoke the applauding word. But there was compensa^ nun even for the scorn- of the religious news- paper in the knowledge that thousands and hundreds of thousands of homely and uncor- troversial lives had been purified by the preacher's winged words.

"Truth of it is." saad Holmes. with a good- humoured twinkle in his eye: "he got a bit in tired of writing up my experiences month after mc nth, and he told me he was going to kill me. I gave Doyle full discretion in the matter, and he made me fall over a precipice. I did have a nasty fall, it is true, but I wasai't absolutely killed. I have often told you I was a wonder- ful amateur trapezist in college, and my a-pe- like agility served me ni good stead on this occasion. I caught hold of the branch of a tree. Tins broke my fail, and I managed to clamber down the rocks to a place of safety. "And what brings you into South Wales 7" I asked him. "This is a return visit. I came down here some months ago to unravel the Penarth Gorilla. Mystery. and did so within a few hours, al. though the public never knew whom to thank for the elucidation of that mystery. Your chief has some good wine and cigars at Cwrt-y- vil." continued Holmes, his face lighting up, with pleasant memories, "and we spent two OK three jolly evenings together." "To what interesting circumstance are we jam debted for this, your second visit?" I in- quired. "I have been spending a rather long holiday in North and South Wales," replied Holmes^ "aind have just finished a little job which haa. not only brought me credit but also enabled met to pay off an old score." "Ha. ha," said I, smelling "copy," "just the very thing. I'm out for the eivening, and nothing would delight me more than to have one of those inimitable yarns of yours. TeH me, all about it, Holmes. I'm sure the story will be worth hearing." Well, as I've also got the evening to go through somehow, I don't mind if I do," isaid Hotkneis, evicLeuitly forsreittdng mat I was a newspaper man. Then, taking. a cigarette out of his wtii-siooked case, he slowly lit it, and, settling himself comfortably in his coey arm. ohair, he began. "Perhaps I ought to explain to you a,t the. beg inriii ng tllalt itlie (detecdrve force cf the kingdom i", to use a vulgar expression., 'dead nuts' on me. and you will, therefore, not be. -surprised when I tell yais tia'. a reyji: am&nd&itkHi; inacie a, \YjPl",h member Parliament to a, Welsh head-constable that I should be eiijga.ged to unravel the mystery of a, big jewel robbery some time ago in the .PrducipaJity wais rejected in a; manner that I considered to be vu* and offensive, the terms of the letter writ-ten by the head constable to the M.j?. being that I might be, all very well in tlie pages of the 'Strand Magazine,' but they were not going to en- trust the unravelling of an important matter like that of a big jewel robbery in every- day life to an amateur. "An Amateur,' fancy that! Sherlock Holmes an amateur! I am not revengeful as a general thing. Clupper, but I felt the rebuff keenly, and I registered a vow, in the presence of my friend Doyle, who was dining with me when the M.P. sent me the head-constable's letter, that ere many months had passed I would compel that head-constable to publicly pay tribute even to my 'amateurish' abilities. I have had my revenge, and feel "peaceful, calm, and happy when I think of it. This was how it came about. A second robbery took place from a, silversmiths shop, and about £ 2j,0Q0 worth, of jewellery was found to have been taken away by the thieves, of whose whereabouts the police, in spite of most strenuous efforts, could not obtain the slightest. clue. There was immediately a great hubbub among the people of the town where the robbery took place, and public meevings were held at which reflections were made upon the efficiency of the police force, as this was the second occasion on which the burglars had gone undetected. While this hubbub was at its heigjht I wrote the head-comstable offering him my services, and making the only condition of their acceptance an undertaking from him that, in the event, of my bringing the thieves to justice or recovering the booty, he should publicly acknowledge my success. He agreed to the terms, and I came down to S-- by the next train. I immedia tely proceeded to the police-station, got all the detectiY8S before i-ne, and, having heard tlieSi stories, which were. I may remark, lamentably bald, I turned to the liead-constable and said, You have hitherto been eceptical of my sm*e6» ness as a private detective, and you have cepted my services eight days after the bw- glary has been committed. During that time vou have had no trace or clue of either the thieves or the missing articles. Therefore, to you the task I am undertaking seems hopeless. But Sherlock Holmes has never yet completely failed, and when he lays his head upon the pillow to-night it will be with the conscious- ness that he has met with some measure of puccess.' The h'ead-constable gazed incre- dulously at me. and the faces of the detectives wore sarcastic expressions. "I see. you think I am fooling you,' I said: 'but Sherlock Holmes ha-s a reputation, and he is prepared to stand or fall by what he has said.' I wanted to make the thing as mysterious as possible, for my own prestige's sake, and extracted a promise from the head-constable not to ques-, t-iou me as to my method-s of work if I suo-i I ceeded in my undertaking. I then left the police office, and mingled with the crowd in tlie public street. I had arranged to return to the police-station at midnight, and the clock was just striking twelve when I entered the bead-constable's sanctorum- 'Of course, )-on have discovered the thieves and recovered the booty?' remarked the head-constable, with a tinge of sarcasm in his voice. 'I have re- covered the booty.' I replied dryly 'but the thieves, although discovered, are not likely to be caught > et awhile.' To cut a long story short. I produced the whole of the st-cden jewellery, which was returned to its owner. With referencie to the thieves, I convinced the head-constable that there was no doubt aboui their having managed to pass right under the noses of the police, and to reach New York in safety. The recovery of the .stolen property was regarded bv the public as a big achieve- ment, and my revenge, was completed. The head-constable came down handsomely, for. in his letter to me, which will in due course be published in the daily journals, h- not only gives me credit for what- I succeeded in doingr, but refers to me 313 the smartest detective in the United Kingdom." Holmes having finished the narrative, leaned back in his chair, and, wrinkling his brow with a self-satisfied air, be.gan rolling another ciga- rette. His ca.se was, as already intimated, well stocked, but he "rolled" a cigarette, because he used to do so in the "Strand Magazine." I watched his quiet, unas.s'uminc'- movements; for a.moment or two. and then, breaking th( silence. said. Your narrative, ha.s been y ^ply-interesting one. Holmes, but the mos( interesting part of it .]s vet to come, Foi* heaven's sake, relieve mv suspense and tell me how did you manage to recover the stolen property so quickly. "Well. old man," replied Holmes, with. forced laucrr, as I have retired from 'public life since Doyle got tired of me, I don't. mind tolling you privately, but don't- breathe a wins peer of my explanation to a living soul, committed the burglarv mvself!" "VAN CLUPPER."
