SMART DRY-DOCKING FEAT AT…
SMART DRY-DOCKING FEAT AT BARRY. A smart piece of ship-repairing work has just been completed at Barry on the steamship Roath, belonging to Messrs John Cory and Sons, Cardiff, which sustained damage under water in passing over the wreck of the steamship Penzance on Oetober 25. The Roath returned to the Barry Dock basin, the forepeak being full of water, and also some injury being sustained in way of No. 1 hold. On Monday, October 27, after consultation between the owners representative (Mr Strong), the underwriters' representative (Mr Aisbitt), and Mr Monroe, the manager of the Barry Graving Dock Company, it was decided, in order to save discharging the cargo zind the great expense entailed thereby, to dry dock the vessel with the whole of her cargo on board. Arrangements were then made as to placing extra keel blocks in the dry dock and special bilge blocks to sustain the great weight to be contended with, which in this instance, including the vessel, her cargo, and bunkers, amounted to over 10,000 tons. On Friday the vessel was placed in the dry dock, drawing 24 feet fore and aft the water was pumped out until the vessel rested on the blocks, when the Barry Dock diver proceeded at once to fit in the wedges on the bilge blocks on each side. The total of these bilge blocks was over 22. Whilst this work was being done three tiers of side shores were placed by the carpenters on each side of the vessel. At nine p.m. the dock was pumped out dry, when it was found that the vessel was resting safely on the blocks without the slightest sign of straining in any way whatever, the work done by the diver and carpenters being perfect in all respects. It was then arranged to fit certain plates over the three or four small holes found. This was at once commenced and the whole of the work completed on Saturday afternoon, the vessel being floated out at 5 p.m. the same day ready to proceed on her voyage.
RAPHAEL TUCK AND SONS' CHRISTMAS…
RAPHAEL TUCK AND SONS' CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR NOVELTIES. We have once again great pleasure in acknow- ledging the arrival of Messrs Raphael Tuck and Sons, Limited's review parcel of new season's Christmas and New Year greetings, calenders, gift books, toy books, art novelties, etc. This Crown- ing Year collection is, as its name implies, the richest and choicest we have yet had the happiness of inspecting. The parcel leads off with a Royal Christmas Panel, a delightful fac smile reproduc- tion of an original Christmas card which this celebrated firm of fine-art and book-publishers had the honour of painting for Her Majesty Queen Alexandra last year, the first Christmas after her accession to the Throne. This charming Christmas panel, representing St. John and the Lamb," and graciously pronounced by Her Majesty to be beautifully executed," is a worthy successor to last season's popular 'Queen Victoria" panel of the Nativity," and will doubtless be appreciated everywhere as an equally appropriate Christmas gift. The preparations made by Messrs Raphael Tuck and Sons for the appropriate celebration of this Crowning Year have been arranged on a scale of completeness and splendour worthy of this great and unique occasion, and their new collection of art novelties in all departments, will be found resplendent with those high artistic attributes which have raised .their productions to the lofty pinnacle they occupy in the estimation of the world of art, and upon which this crowning year will appropriately set its seal.
