GREAT TKMPEKANCK MEETING A'l THE I'ATILION oz? TnE EISTEDDFOD. .I On Monday evenuM, priorto the opening of-the Eis- teddtod, a large m'eeting was held in the pavilion, uiidei the auspices, of the^Tatioijal Temperaiice League, which was presided, over by the Kfev. Rector of Xeat Keatht'liairniart in 6pesing, the meeting, said it gave him the gifea'test' plaieureift) ijeeupy the position which the kindness af his. fHetids had placed hi.ni in. Cardiganshire, when he thought one-lialf (he population^and he thought lie was right in laying'one-hiilf of the working populations-had adopted the principles 'of 'total abstioefnoe. Now, he did not thiuk thitt the old county had lost the spirit that it then possessed, or had become estranged to the causes and the principles of total abstinence in the present day but quite sure was he of this, that those who once avowed those principles would admit that the best interests of the country were more largely promoted at that time than they were now under the change of circumstances to which he had just referred. The rev. gentleman conclud- ed, and said that he had three reasons why he should not allow himself to enter into the subject at auy length. 1st. There was to be a rehearsal of the choirs which were to perform during the Eisteddfod. secondly, he had got so many good men around him on the platform tu address them; and, thirdly, that the time was so short that it preclu led his occupying their time any longer. But he begged to express regret that a zealous and faithful advo- cate of the temperance cause—Mr. S. Bowley, of Lon- don—was unable to be present. He had telegraphed him that lie w is unable to catch the only train that would have brou0ut him to Aberystwith. He believed U r. Bowley had gone to Birmingham, where they had been announced to appear on Wednos-lay, to take part in a work similar to that in which they were engaged. An exhibition of the Art, Industry, and Products of Wales," was opened on Tuesday last at the Temperance Hall, and continued on the following days. The project was a new one, suggested, we believe, by the Rev. Chan. cellor Williams, of Anglesey, who being nobly supported by the warm hearts and the willing hands" of the peo- ple, succeeded in collecting together such an exhibition of the art and manufactures of Wales that will moat assuredly encourage the promoters to further exertions in giving effect to that which v. as taken up with so much heartiness and succegs.
