THE SCOTCH SHOOTING MYSTERY.…
THE SCOTCH SHOOTING MYSTERY. A STORY ABOUT THE MISSING MAN SCOTT. THE POLICE HAVE BLUNDERED. I saw him (writes the Sun" representa- tive) in conversation with another official at a West-end hotel. Scott's brother had been particularly described to me. Are you Air. George Sweeney!" I asked. "I am," said the tall military figure of the man, who so ol«?ely resembled the, printed description of t1le mi3.<iu!{ Scott that I knew him at a glancc. Well I'm a friend of Mr.. Would you mind giving me a word?" "Certainly but I don't know what you want," said Sweeney. We stood aside talking as people came and went. You've been subpoenal by the police?" "No." Well; but they've seen you?" Oh, yes." "Where's your brother?" "I'm sure I don't know." "Yu know he's wanted 1" Y., but I don't think he knows it. They've made a great mistake. My brother is not the man." "Possibly; was not he in S-tl..d?" How should I know? He may have gone I fI7 folnetilo, A: or elsewhere. 1 -'t teU." "Then he is 'Scott'"? "He is not. The police have bluiidc-rld-got hold of the wrong man. Why, .hess my life, the description given doesn't fit my brother. How's that? My bwther's over six foot and has b 'u' and is qu*" doubled up with wn- blue eyes, ?7h dId you see your brother, d-?,,d Sweeney, t' 11 "I believe he came here about the middle of September. "After I th:e alr:toihM! "I think so—he didn't say where he'd been." "Was the Scotch shooting ease mentioned?" "Certainly not. not a whisper; I then knew nothing of it." How do vou account for his absence now vou know he is charged 1" In this way. My brother, as I told you juet now, is a book- maker. Now, racing's all very well in the summer, but for an invalid like him to follow his occupation in winter would be absurd. You know what a life it is. He is probably abroad, or at some out-of-the-way seaside place. It was always his habit to go off at a minute's notice without letting us know where he was. Once he went round the world." He's well off then?" Oh. yes, he has ofteu £100 in his pocket." "I suppose you know your brother 'Scott,' as they call him, and your father left 35, Sutherland-street, Pim- lico, in the first week in September. I d. It you 1 Detectives were worrving their lives out. My sister couldn't go to- the greengrocer's without someone following ber.?' "Did your brother ??- where he was going?" T. Y.. k,?o? Monson, 'rottnham, Hambrough, and the rest?" I don't, -d never heard of them until this caee." "I don't know whether you've notice the fact in the papers, but it is said a bundle of letters, written by Monson, addressed to one Davis, will be produced at the trial." I v- not seen the statement. If so, how do you know the Davis mentioned was my brother? Pos- sibly they'll produce the person who handed the pohoe the letters. "Perhaps they won't! Anyhow, you'll admit your brother raced under the Ynaua'ie of Ted Davis." "He did, and so do hundreds of others." What's your reason for your brother's extraordinary ab- sence? I say again, he is d,-ig, gave him. self a year to live, and most likely is in sc?oe out-of-the-way part of the country for the win- ter. He sta?ted mrly." "Do you think he'll turn up at the trial?" Most a-qruredly as eoonaa he knows of this affair. "Your brother lived at Richmond once? What does your father fay about it all?" "He was at first like myself much amused, but when it became serious he wouldn't discuss the matter he was so angry." "You know where he is, I presume?" "I don't; I go my way and do my work. I've been here some eleven years, and I refuse to be mixed up in such busi- ness.
POULTRY SHOW AT CARDIFF.
POULTRY SHOW AT CARDIFF. The poultry show in connection with the Car- dim and District Fanciers' Society, which was opened on Wednesday under such favourable auspices, remained open on Thursday, and was visited by a large number of persons. In class 78 the exhibit of Dr. John Davies, of Bath, was disqualified, it is said, for trimming, and we understand that the matter will be brought before the pigeon club at an early date for decision.' Dnring the evening the majority of the sd1ing classes were sold by public ,U.ti"' after which the show, which has proved to be one of the most successful yet eld by the society, came to a conclusion.

! , VC LOCAL SPORT.'1
VC LOCAL SPORT. '1 (Taken from the Evening Express.) There are several changes in the trial teams hat torn out at Neath to-morrow (Satur- day). Neither M'Cutcheon nor Conway Rees will turn out, so their places in the Probables' back line will be filled bj Pearson and KUiolt. Percy Phillips will also be absent from half back, and thai will necessitate bringing Shepherd to partner Parfitt- To fill the three Taeaneies that the moving of the three above men will cause there will be a draw on the reserves. Cliff Bowen will take Pearson's place, Jack Davies will be in the centre, and Ben Thomas will partner Selwyn Biggs. There will be a couple of alterations in the forwards. Hutchinson will re-place C. B. Nichol, who is unable to be present, and D. W. Nichol will fill the Neath man's place in the Possibles* for ward rank. The teams will probaHy tun, out as follow:—Probables (red and white stripes) Back, W. J .Bancroft. Swansea; three-quarterbacks, T. W,Pearson, J. Elliott, Norman Biggs( Cardiff) ,and A. J. Goull (Newport) half backs, G. Shep- herd (Penarth) and F. C. Parfitt (New port) forwards, T. C. Graham, A. W. Boucher, W. Watts, H. Day, J. Hannen (Newport), F. Mills (Swansea), A. F. Hiil (Cardiff), and F. Hutchinson (Neath) Possibles (black red and black bands): Back, T. England (New. port) three-quarterbacks, C, Bowen (LIanelly), D. Fitzgerald (Cardiff). J. Davies (Morriston), and F. H. Dauncey (Newport) half backs, B. Thomas (Llanelly) and Selwyn Biggs (Cardiff); forwards, D. W. Nichol, D. J. Daniell ILlan. elly), W. Cope (Cardiff), S. Rice (Swaneca), W. Howells (Aberavon), R. G. Edwards (Morris- ton), W. Phillips (Cardiff Harlequins), and W. Davies (Cardiff). For the benefit of those travelling to Neath, I may mention that an excursion train will run from Newport at 12.10 Cardiff at 12.30 re- turning from Neath at 7.20. The return fare from Newport is three iihilugs; from Cardiff, two and sixpence. Now, with reference to those players not turning out for the trial match, the Union com- mittee will, it is hoped, strictly adhere to their rule that any player failing to turn up shalllose all further chance of ",eing selected in the team. My reason for urginsr this is that it is unfair to select a man for International honours on past reputation and mere hearsay it is unfair to the team as a whole, and unfair to other players who are in attendance. If it were a question of ex-, pense there would be some excuse perhaps, but every possible expanse is defrayed by the Union, and if a playt-r does not consider it worth while playing in the trial match, always pro- viding, of course, tVat there is no genuine reason for his absencc, the committee, in fair- ness to other good ion, should not trouble to consider the claims of the absentees. When all is said and done, however, it is hardly likely we are going to give over-much consideration to some of the absentees. Practi- cally there are three-C. B. Nichol, Conway Rees, and M'Cutcheon. The first men- tioned most improve a wonderful lot on his Cambridge form against Cardiff if he hopes to get in, whilst M'Cutcheon. according to the Northern critics, is going a bit rocky this year, which, by the way, makes it all the more important that we should have a chance of judging of his play before he is selected. I am a bit inclined, however, to think that neither of these men will get in on their merits. Conway Rees is said to be playing remarkably well, and has practically been the making of the Oxford team. For this position at left centre, however, there are Elliott and Fitzgerald also to be con- sidered, and I fancy the position will fall to one of these two. Only the other day ^correspondent came along with a suggestion that is perhaps worth consider- ing. It was to play Fitzgerald at left centre and Elliott at half. Not a bad idea by ttiiy means, for Elliott and Parfitt playing together would nlake a pair second to none. Another letter reached me from New York on Thursday, in which my over-welcome cor- respondent E.W." gives some idea of profes- sionalism in the States. He says Dear "Welsh Athlete,"—The agitation against professionalism in football continues at high speed, and it seems the university and college teams will have to expel their concealed professionals and adopt looser play and less rough tactics. American newspapers are giving British football fatalities of last year, and try- ing to prove the Rugby (English) game is as dangerous and less scientific than American football. Little notice is taken of these absurd remarks by those who know our cousins' litt!c eccentricities of boasting and newspaper licence, but, fearing the anti-football bddisb in Great Brita iu may notice them, it should be pomted out that for each American player there are from 40 to 50 Britishers actively following the game (without padded clothes and protec- tors) all days of every week. So long as our cousins play football clad like knights in armour they lay a premium on slow, mercilessly rough games. The Cardiff Rovers are proving themselves to be a very hard nut, for they fairly pulveriseO the Caerphilly team on Wednesday afternoon at Caerphilly. Playing up hill during the first half they put on a goal and a try to one try by the home team. On changing ends they took ad- vantage of the gradient, and added two more [ tries, which were converts, thus winnirg by three goals and a try to a try. The scorers were Spillane, Eosser (captain), C. Mills, end C. Williams. Referee Mr. G. Lewis, Cardiff Football Club. Considering that the Rovers had not been playing for four weeks (though practice had been kept up) the result augurs well for future matches. Next Wednc^y they meet Hengoed on the 'Quins' ground, and a tough game is anticipated, though the Rover; do not expect that their record, which up to dltte i. eight goals (one dropped) and nine tries to one goal and one try by their opponents, will be tampered with. Good old Uncle Tom s boys Mr. g. Rowland Hill, hon. secretary to the Rugby Football Association, sends the tijtorU- man the following ruling of the committee for circulation A referee having given a deci- sion after blowing his whistle cannot under any circumstances alter it. The act of a player taking the ball off the ground with his feet in a scrimmage does not constitute picking up' in a scrimmage within the meaning of Law 6." On Saturday next there will be an inter-team cross-country race between the Koath Harriers and St. Anne's Harriers, starting from the Roath headquarters at three p.m. That was a startling statement made by Lin- ton in the course of his interview on Wednesday night, to the effect that there would be but very few of onr bicyclists who would not be profes- sionals after Christmas, simply because their licences would be refused, and so they would have no choice in the matter. There is, how- ever, a growing tendency amongst cyclists to move for money prizes instead of the usual trophies. Linton says :-Amateurism is a fine game when you have plenty of money to keep it up, but very few riders have the money to do so, for they are, for the most part, work- ing men. From what I hear and on every side of me I b?in to think that the N.C. U. and other M?ttM b?M have before them a greater frtrugglo to maintain the amateur status than they have had at any part of thtit career. Wnr.SH ATHLETg.

LOCAL FINANCE. LOCAL FINANCE. I [BY OUR FINANCIAL EDITOR.] CARDIFF. THURSDAY. Faint-heartedness has again affected the market to-day, and this has been distinctly marked in regard to Khymney Ordinary Stock, hich has declined two points. We do not often make predictions, but when we do it is upon absolutely trustworthy autho- rity, and we have no hesitation in saying that Rhymneys at their present price are worth picking up-to keep for a time. There are reasons, and they are important, why the agreement between the Tafi and Rhymney should not be announced just now. Althoug? we are in possession of certain facts, we are precluded from making use of them, and all we can say at present is that Rhymneys are worth more than 205. The other fluctuations are not important, but they show a want of confidence in some loaal securities. They are as follow :— ttise Albion Colliery Shares J to 11|—g, and North's Preference A to 5-:t, Fall: Khymney Railway Ordinary 2 to 204-6, Rhondda and Swansea Bay Preference k to 10—?!, and Penrikyber Preference 4 to 4|— 5. Hancock Preference Shares and Deben- tures are now quoted ex dividend, the former at 11J—| and the latter at 101—3. Thackeray and Co. in their weekly report give the following information:- B.it.Th. chief characteristic of this market has, for the past few weeks, been one of extreme dulness, and at Jle present moment there does net appear to be any indication of an improving tendency. The want of support is very marked all ronnd, and transactions in the ordinary stocks of our local lines have continued T!ry limiW, Barrys, with little moving in t ,em, a. abont 203.
