The Man in iha Street. The…
The Man in iha Street. The Man *In A the Street# I When a a explosion or some other dreadful catastrophe occurs, the earth resounds with the oravcry of our j e!sh miners. Every newspaper I devotes its bo)dest, blackest head- lines to their deeds of heroism, and nothing i« too good to say of the splendid felloes who risk their all—their lives—on behalf of thpir unfortunate comrades who become the victims of r.ftcrdnmp, a faHma: roof, and th other dangers inci- denta! to their calling. When each man descends to his work he never know<' tf it wii) be his good fortune to emerge from I his dangerous trad! to again re-join his I family circle. A\*liila so many bitter things fud words are hemp done and satd. some of us are apt to overtook the miner's side of the matter, and at the worst it I cannot be charged against him that he is pursuing a particular course of action for t fun when his livelihood a.nd that of his f family are jeopardised. With winter's I blast ful! upon him in his hour of trial. the miner is having a, bad time. He and j his famil: arc roughing the wor'd in the worst sense. Their privations are very rea! to them, and with the larder and the ¡ roa-house empty they deserve the sym- 1 pathy of all who have any thought for j dieir fellow-creatures. Don't judge the ¡ miner too harshly, reader, and when you ¡ read your newspaper cast a thought to his side of the matter. I Evprything seems to be going well 11 at Newport. They have got a Pill man for Pi!!—almost as good 1 as a. frying PiHmaa among the Amber and Biack men—the sun con- tinues to shine en the fskside people, and the tramps putting up at the Ratepayers' I Hotel during the paf-t fortnight show a I decline of eleven compared with the cor- 1\ responding period of last year. These arc just. a few of the privileges onioyed by the inhabitants of the capital of Monmouth- I shire. and oi-,lv a very slight cudgeHmg of brains would serve to lengthen the list almost indefinitely, while people who live in less favoured spots are getting tired of I hearing about the town that is remark- able on account of rts falling rates. But I am glad to use this opportunity I of congratulating the Newport Guar- dians on their decision to spend ?3 on the purchase of toys for the children's Christmas tree. This sum will not cauae a big extra demand to be made on those who delight to pay for municipal tunes whether they call for them or not, and I it need not eveu cause a halt in the fall- ing process so popular on the banks of the t'sk. This sum might easily have I been doubled or. trebled, and no one I would have been a pp.nny the worse, while the youngsters would have been all the merrier. But I am glad to see the guar- dians remembering the little ones, who are not responsible for General Elections and other Christmas evils, and I should Ii.kc to see their example copied by other unions—a.nd by all sorts and conditions of men and women everywhere. Tiny Tim and bis little sisters ought to have a jolly Christmas in any case, and all grown-ups should conspire to that end under any and every circumstance. At Barry, the town of boasted pro- gress, there are seamen who literally ¡ have nowhere to lay their heads. Accord- I ing to statements made at the CardiS I Board of Guardians on Saturday these bomeieys fellows who go out to the sea in our ships to enrich the Empire have to sleep unprotected during these bitter nights at the docks! de, under the freez- ing shadow of the hopeless cinder tips, or endure exposure at the lime kilns. There is not a, casual ward where a man I can worx for a night's lodging nearer than Cardiff. and in this respect, for a town of its size. Barry must stand abso- lutety alone. On their own confession, the guardians declined to act in the matter when it was discussed two years ago. It seems scarcely credible that such a state of things can exist, and when the matter comes to he discussed next Saturday it is reasonable to assume that the board which has just voted some hundreds of pounds for retiring rooms I for its own members will decide unani- mously to do something in the way of housing the helpless, penniless fellows so utterly dependent upon some provision of the kinrØ. It has often been remarked that the Cardiff City Council could well do with a few more business men of more than average attainments—men who had been used to thinking on nna.ncial tines, with some idea of the value and the power of money, and able to grasp what pounds mean when they run into thousands, and so on. The electors of Park Ward have an opportunity of returning such a man in Mr. J. B. Ferrier, whose ability is beyond question. His 50 years' experience at the Docka would be invaluable in the council chamber. In the one matter of development it would be diSicult to get his equal, and this is the one question which should be forced to the front. As he pointed out at his meeting on Satur- day, the corporation has become a great trading concern, and there is no need to enlarge upon the necessity of getting business men at the helm. If the rate- payers could suppose themselves so many shareholders, and their aldermen and councillors a board of directors, they I would have no hesitation in returning men of the stamp of Mr. Ferrier. When this daas of men decline to staad Uta fact iz regretted, and now he is before the electors there should onty be one result.. Bravo, Bargoed* Last night's meeting i to organise the district in its crusade against consumption shouJd give a big nU'p to the movement in that up-to- date town, end it was a pleasure to see the medical men rallying so strongly to the need of the people. it is one of the most p!casant features in the King Edward Memorial ttia4 the doctors are everywhere prepared to lead. This has been the case at CardiS, where Dr. Robinson and Dr. Smith roUed up their shirt sleeves at the heginning of the fray. and at every other point where the batde cry has been --iien up it invariably happens that the men of pill and piaster take up their position right in the van- guard. At Bargoed they have gone iu for organisation, and I am glad t<j see that a system of house-to-house collec- tion ha.s hcen suggested. Nodoobt, that w. I be acted upon. If it is not the only way, it is certainly one of the best methods, in that it reaches all classes and gives every person an opportunity to con- tribute according to his a-bHity. Every- body is puttijip' his houlder to the wheel, and Bargoed will be in the forefront with those who are going out to nght the national enemy.
