(By Special Arrangement.—Copyright) NURSE CLEMENTINE By ADELINE SARGEANT I "I suppose you are not very well off, Dr. Tristram?" said the visitor, with a smile. Dr. Tristram-he was a young man, with an independent air-positively glared at the speaker from the circular chair at his writing-table. "I beg your pardon," he said, icily. He held a pen uplifted in one hand; he had been about to write a prescription for some trifling ailment about which the new patient ha<T consulted him, and the unexpected question had taken him by surprise. The questioner was a young man. with a pale face and high shoulders, A sickly- looking man. whose figure twisted itself, as if unconsciously, into odd, angular attitudes, while he met the doctor's haughty gaze. Perhaps Dr. Tristram, on reflection, saw the matter in this light; for he smiled I' suddenly and turned away with a shrug of his shoulders. "You'll take this draught," he said, indifferently, "three times a day; and the powder-" "Oh, confound your medical rot" said the man in the patient's chair, with a queer smile upon his livid face. "I spoke seriously. I have a reason for wishing to know. You're a poor man, I believe; why do you try to disguise the fact?" "I am at a loss to know why you ask me such a question," said the doctor, stretching out his hand to the bell. "Wait a moment," said the stranger, quietly. "1 told you I had a reason. Do you want to make five thousand pounds?" The doctor did not ring the bell after all. He raised his eyebrows, and looked reflectively at his visitor. I "Do you propose to put me in the way of making it?" he asked. "Yes, I do." Tristram smiled and leaned back in his chair. "A rich man even does not despise five thousand pounds. he said. But I rather doubt your power of showing me how to make it." "May I speak in confidence? You will let this conversation remain between ourselves? On that understanding I wil put that sum of money into your hands within a week." Tristram hesitated. It occurred to him that he ought not to promise secrecy; but the temptation to know the man's meaning was immense. The doctor was poor, as the patient had said. and he was young and in love! With five thousand pounds in hie pocket he oould marry Elsie Marchmont at once'. Surely there could be no hann in hearing what the stranger had to say. "You may speak," he said, slowly. "But, of course, it is useless for you to suggest any- thing unprofessional." Oh, of course, we know all about that. There are certain rules and customs you are bound by, and they must not be broken- openly. But there Is no need to tell the world everything you do." I would rather not hear any more." said Dr. Tristram. rising from his chair. But the stranger held up his hand. "Listen," he sa.id. "I GAVE you a ialse name just now. I said it was James Steflman. It is nothing of the kind. It is Vincent Ave- ling." Aveling?" Yes. You know the name. Your boarder— the old man whom you are treating in your own house as a mental patient-his name is Aveling. And I am his son." "I have heard of you," said the doctor, speaking with decision. "And I must say I have heard nothing good. Your father, in his sane intervals, has spoken very bitterly of you. We were not very good friends," returned the man who called himself Vincent Aveling. But that does not very much matter. He is hopelessly insane. You know yourself that he cannot recover. And he is very rich." "Rich? You are misinformed." Not at all. He told you he was poor, and yon were fool enough—excuse the word—to be- lieve him He barely pays his expenses, and he has a rent roll of something like twenty- five thousand a year." "That has nothing to do with me," said the doctor shortly. "Hasn't it? Well, it concerns me a good I dea.1. I don't want you to do much for me, doctor. I want you simply to drop this little powder into one of his medicine bottles; I shall require nothing more. And when you ha-ve done it, I'll deposit the five thousand II pounds in your bank." "May I ask whether you are suggesting that I should commit murder?" said Tristram, with flaming eyes. "Lord, no," said Aveling, carelessly. 1 "There's no harm in the stuff. It's a. sleep- ing draught; queer stuff which I got in the Braails. You can't get it in England." "And supposing it is a sleeping draught, why do you wish to give it to your father?" "That's my look-out." "You may go to the D^RIL!" said Tristram, hotly; not that he was given to the use of profane language, but that there was some- thing so suggestive of evil in his visitor's face that the words seemed to rise unbidden to the young doctor's lips. Then he rang the bell sharply, but before the servant appeared Aveling found time to say: "You're a fool you won't accept my pro- posal. I should do the old man no harm." "Show this gentleman out at onoe," said Dr. Tristram stiffly to the page, who pre- sented himself at the door, and turned his back upon Vincent Aveling, refusing to see either his hand or the fee he offered. "Think better of it. You can write to me at the West Central District Office. It's a good offer." Tristram returned no answer; and Mr. Ave- ling with his hands in his pockets, followed the boy out of the room. The transit from the doctor's consulting room to the front door occupied only a few seconds, but during that time Aveling managed to whisper a sentence or two into the boy's ear. You know the old gentleman's nurse, up- stairs?" he said. Nurse Clementine—oh, yes, sir." Give her this, then," thrusting a small packet into the boy's hands, when nobody sees you. Keep it dark—understand? Here's half-a-crown for you." The boy smiled, thrust the packet into his pocket with a nod, and had time only to closo the door before Dr. Tristram appeared in the hall. The face presented by the PAGE to his master was one of unparelleled solemnity. Dobson! Yon need not admit that person if he comes agfain." No, sir." "Any more patients?" No, sir. Nurse wanted to see you. if you please, sir." The doctor turned to the stairs. He made his way to the pleasant, airy bedroom with a small sitting-room opening out of it, that he had allotted to his resident patient, AIR Aveling; aDd after a quick examination of the old man's state he turned to the nurse. She was a handsome woman of about thirty, with dark eyes and a bueh of black curly hair. I Well, nurse?" "He.Is VER^REBOEARJJOKDAY; and u, I kom you will be out until late, I wanted to know whether I should give him a sedative to- night." Tristram wished she had asked for anything else. At that moment he disliked the very mention of a sleeping-draught. He felt the old man's pulse once more. Very well, nurse. I will send it up. But don't give it unless you are obliged. By the way, did you know that Mr. Aveling had a son living?" He was not looking at the nurse, or he might have seen her lips turn white. No, sir," she replied. "Well. he has," said the doctor, brusquely. "And if the man calls, remember, please, tha.t he is not to be admitted." "Yes, I will remember," said the nurse, meekly. She was certainly more submissive than the generality of her kind. The doctor went out: he had business at the other side of London, and did not return hcane again until midnight. Then he went tc bed and slept soundly until be was called at seven o'clock. Before he was dressed a. MESSAGE came from the invalid's room; would he go at once and see Mr. Aveling? He went, and saw from the blanched of the nurse that something was wrong. A very short examination revealed, the fact that Mr. Aveling was dead, and that be had died—as the dnegs in a medicine glass beside his bed testified—from an overdose of chloral. "Who gave him this?" Tristram cried out, threateningly. And the nurse answered. with her accustomed meekness. "You sent up the dose, sir. I gave jnst what you sent." SHE produced the empty medicine bottle, and placed it before him. "But I never gave that amount of chloral," he said. "What I gave would not have harmed a child The nurse made no answer in words; but, by the way she set her lips. he knew that she meant to accuse him of having made a mistake. Thenceforward, for some hours, a period of torture sEt in for Harold Tristram. There were dreadful formalities to go through: conference with other doctors and also with, the police; there was to be an autopsy before the inquest; and he knew very well, by the glances and muttered words that he caught, that he was suspected of having murdered the old man. He was certain that he had administered a dose of ten grains only; but far more than that dose would be required to produce death. And nobody believed his statement; it was generally thought that he had. perhaps, not intended to give so large a dose, but that he had—in haste or negli- gence—made some terrible mistake. And as he sat in his study chair that night, wondering what the morrow would bring forth, the door opened to admit the man whom he least desired to see-Vinoont Ave- ling. But Tristram had scarcely spirit enough to protest. Yon-you here?" he said. I have come to discharge a debt," said Ave- ling, smoothly. It was foolish of you to refuse my terms, and then to bungle the mat- ter; but I don't mind acknowledging your assistance. Here are notes for two thousand; pounds. If I were you I should take "them and leave the country." You Tile cur! Do yon mean to insinuate thai I killed the eld m&nr" You made up the dose that killed hun. I believe. Of course, the nurse administered it actually. I mean to have a word with her later. You ha,d better put up the notes AND get off as quickly as you can. If not, you know very well that a. charge of wilful murder will be brought against you." Take back your money and get out of my house, you villain," said the doctor, hoarsely. "You asked me to drag your father, and I refused but we will have the whole story told AT the inquest to-morrow morning-" We shall have nothing of the kind," said Aveling. Do you think I can't prevent that. you fool? Either you'll take the MONEY and go. or you won't lease this house alive. I came in unobserved; the servants are gone; and here you may die!" There are two words to that," said Tris- tram. with gathering fierceness. And then the two men hurled themselves at each other's throats. For some time they wrestled and strained every muscle in the attempt t-o gain th& mastery. HelD! murder! murder! help!" And then Tristram knew no more. It was long before he came to himself again. WHEN he recovered consciousness, he knew that he was in a hospital ward; and as memory came back to him, he faintly wondered what had happened, and whether he had been accused of murder and was under arrest. But the faces that came and went were bright and friendly, and he had not the strength to ask questions. But at length, one of his oldest friends, a medical man like him. self, came and sat beside him. and asked him whether be felt able to recall the past. If he. did. there was someone waiting who wished to see him, someone who was leaving England. and wanted to say good-bye. He nodded- IV-'HLY. but he hardly knew what the doctor 121,P a 13 T. It was Nurse Clement i 7-,(, WHO appeared, and made things clear TO him. She dropped <M her knees beside his toed, kissed his hand, and told her story, with the tears chasing each other down her cheeks. "I'm Vincent Aveling's wife." rhp said brokenly. It was he who made IDP, offer my- self as nurse and attendant to old Mr. Ave- ling. Vincent wanted his father's monoy; and he knew that it was all willed to him. He had faaled in getting me to make away with the poor old man. and he hoped to bribe you into giving him the-the sleeping- draught. as he called it. It was a vegetable poison, which leaves no tra-ce in the system, and that was what was administered in the harmless sedative which you gave." "But you—you—must.have put it in?" mur. mered Tristram, with his eyes on her face. He made me do it by a trick. He eont me a packet by the page-boy; it was labelled "To be taken with the Chloral.-E.T.your initials, yon SEE. I was deoeive-d fortheiroictent and gave the dose without knowing that he had ever been to the house. When I dis- covered what I had done, I was wild with despair. But you were going to sacrifice me—to him?" "Yes, but. when I saw you struggling tû. gether I could not bear it. I called for the police—I saved you-and I told the truth. My husband was charged with the crime, and poisoned himself in the prison. I was re- leased. That is the whole story. Will you forgive me before I go?" "I forgive you—I bless you for acting as you did at the last, said Tristram brokenly. If I can help you I shall be glad." She shook her head. "I have had WORK" found for me. I came only to tell you the truth, and to wish you well. Your days of struggle are over. Dr. Tristram; you will be happy now." She was gone, and Tristram was left to ponder the words that she had said. not know- ing until afterwards how true they were. and that henceforth his life, and the life of the woman he loved, would run on lines of peace and of prosperity. For old Mr. Aveling had left him ten thousand pounds. God bless the woman who saved me," he sometimes murmured to himse'f. But of Nurse Clementine he never heard again. (The End.)
