__h_ "CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE SWANSEA AND THE r H!DDEN PLAGUE. I VISIT OF LEADERS OF ¡' NATIONAL MOVEMEN OF I Under the auspices of the National Council for Corn batting Venereal Dis- eases, a, aplendidly-attended puMic meet- ing was held at the ',+wansea Albert Minor Hall on Friday evening, when ad- dresses were delivered on the subject by: Dt. Sir Malcolm Morn?, K.C.V.O., F.R.C.S.E. (the chairman of the National Council), and Dr. Winifred OulUs, lec- turer en physiology in the Women's College, London, and who holds & very high position in the scientific world. Thf c-b..r,r wa.s taken by the Deputy-Mayor (AM. Ben Jones), who was supported by Coun. Dd. Williams (chairman of the Swansea Health Cmmitt.e), Dr. J. A. i Rawling«t, Commander Down, Mr. J.) Aeron Thomas, Dr. T. Evans (medical ofncpr of health), and Mr. Roger Beck I (chairman of the Hospital Board). In opening, the I-eputv-Ma-vor said that Dr. Bvans had done all in b?s power to minimise the terrible evil under notice,' and he (the chairman) hoped they would alt do their best to make Swansea, a I healthier, cleaner, a-nd a. more religious Swansea. (Applause.) In the course of a. striking address Dr. Malcolm Morris declared there had been a conspiracy in t'be past not to talk of these things in respectable circles. The National Council had been responsible for breaking down that conspiracy—(hea-r, hear)—and they were not going to lapse tt.ga.tn into the old wretched system of never investigating a thing beenu" it was ugly and nastv. Those diseases were respon- sible for a very large amount of infantile mnrtaHty, all of which could be stopped they prevented child birth, and they in- troduced into the world maimed children. Taking his hearers aguratively through a ward in the Swansea Hospital and then through an asylum, he declared that cases cf aneurism of the aorta, 98 per cant. of them, were due to untreated or. badly treated venereal diseases. Heart' diaea.se was also a late manifestation of the diseases in many cases. These diseases Sir Malcolm said produce a.n amount of blindaess ten times more horrible than the blind- ness produced by the war. They accounted for one-fourth of the blindness in the country <md over 50 per cant. of the ..terilit,y of the country." It WM thought by some that these diseases (Dr. Moms went on) werf sent aa a punish- ment for sin but he could nevfr believe it, for a large percentage fe!] on absolutely in- noceut v.outen and childreu. and it was their duty to nght the di&eaaes with all their might. COAL WILL BE CHEAPER! ——— 10 GOOD NEWS FOR CONSUMERS, i I THE NEW ORDER AT I SWANSEA. Unc<'r the new Order, which the Swansea Corpora.tion Co&l Cotninittee w<M appointeti on Thursday to carry out, the reta-il prices of co&l looks like being some shillings a hm cheaper than a,t present. This will be doe to the limitation of the retailers' profit and the 6stablishment of a fixed aelliug prio schedule. The position at,$wajlrea is that the coal merchants have already been a.sked to sub- mit tentativje suggestions uppn the carrying out cf the Coal Controller's Order, which cornea into force next month, or As eoort as possible thereafter, a.nd when theae ha.ve bee:i coiiqidererl by the Swansea. The oonditiotM ha.ve cornpHcated beartnga, but the cha-rgM aJlo\ved for are pla.in, and, with the coaJ merch&]?t'<' co-operation, they will easily be surmounted. A few of the QifRcultiea would appe&r to be to apportion the establishment charges, where, for instance, coa.1 is only one factor of a haulier's busin?s?. ?nd al*?o to ensure the dlivry of nxed crades. ¡ 8<MMFtgM!'M. iLANELLY'S WELCOME HOME. 7 F!NE RECEPTION ? FOR VC. BATCH OF HONOURS FOR SERGT. tVOR REES. I Never w&s a greater rereptiou accorded tt soldier than that which was prepared tfor Sergt. Ivor Recs, V.C., on his arrival at the LlaneHv G.W.R. Statton on Satur- tiav, just after 1 p.m. It ts estimated ¡ that at least 20.COO peopto hned the l youte from the station to the Town iiau. At the station the gallant ergeant was teceived bv the Mayor (Aid. D. James Pavies) and the members of the Cor- poration. The route all th4A way to the 5'own Hall was lined hy Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and the Churf-h Lads' Brigade, whilst the order of the proce.ss'onwasas fo.nows:—Town Band, carnage with V.C., General Sir James Hills-Johnes, V.C., and the Mayor, escort of hundred sol- diers, Corporation, relatives ot C., Pwll representatives. Volunteers St. John Ambulance Brigade, Red Cross, Boy Scouts. Church Lads' Brigade, Mre Brigade, munition girls, general public. There was great cheering when Sergt. Rees stepped into the carnage from the railway station. The Mayor's WeIOOIM. I At the Town Hall the Mayor, speaking: from the balcony, said this was the hrst day of feativities in the sombre days of the war, and the occasion justined it. Their military hero had arrived home ttfter being decorated by the King with the highest MUiiary distinction jt was possible to obtain. Sergt. Rees had been weicomed home with open arms. Ha would alwavs be treated with the respect and reverence which a V.C. commands. Sergt. Rees deserved to be congratulated en the glorious deed which he hfld per- formed. They looked with wonder and amazement om nrat reading the omcial record as to how Secgt. Ree won the V.C. It wa.s as heroic and valourous a deed as any yet recorded in the omcial Kazette during this war. Sergt. Rees had been a true and faithful soldier, and the deed which he had performed proved that the age of heroes was not yet dead. (Applause.) j&100ChM)Ue. w. Mr. E. P. Lewi. of the Snath NN,;ViRs Worka, then presented Sergt. Roes with a, cheque of J6100 h'om Messrs. R. He eudosed a, cheque, In fulfilment of the promise made by their late chairman, and desired to say that it was a great ple,.I- aure for' him to be able to carry out tha.t promise. OMMtV.C. General Sir Jamea Hilta-Johnes!, V. C., aa-nt it ffdt-ded him the greatest pleasure to come t-o TJaneily to take part in the reception which had that day been given to one of their townsmen, who had been helping to uphold the honoar and repotation of the British Army. Ser,gt. Rees had won an honour which every man hoped to win when b<t jotned the Army. Many men had won the V.C., but uniortuna-tely their deed had never been seen. He was glad that the deed of Sergt. Reea had not been overlo-ok-ed, and hoped that he would continue to have grea.t good fortune. The deed which enabled him to win the V.C. was one in which there WM practically a thousand to one cha-nce against his coming through unharmed. He was pleased also to learn that Sergt. Reee was wannly congratnlatd by the King. Lady Howard a!-o warmly congratulated Scrgt. Rees, who was received with pot cheering when he came forwar..tO. respond.
