WALES FROM HOME
WALES FROM HOME "YR HEN IAITH" ABROAD HYMNS ON A TROOPSHIP Mr. David Griffiths, lately headmaster of the Church of England School, Pontar- dulaie, and before that headmaster of Dol- gelly School, who is now with the Colours, finds, in his travels, that the world is very homely, and very Cymric. In a letter juat received by Mr. L. J. Roberts, H.M. Inspector of Schools, Mr. Griffiths says that after seeing service in the Mechanical Transport and the Tan4 a: home, he finds himself in India. Tht voyage proved quite uneventiul, but clearly proved to him the long arms of the British Navy, in that as all the trans-' ports were safely convoyed. Mr. Griffiths ,c(.ntinues WELSH HYMNS. Describing the continuations of the journey, he wri :-Lying in a ham- mock on deck one night, imagine my surprise when I heard the strains of Gaersalem and other well-known Welsh hymns. Very soon I was pushing my way towards the spot, and found a little party of Welshmen, including one ,hq lied been in my class when I wa.s pupil-teacher, and two men from Pcmtarclulais. Every even- ing after this we had a 8ing-{jong of Welsh hymn,s and airs. I don't know how to »'Aocouht for it, but the average Welshman is still unfamiliar with the words of Welsh adpa that have been taught in schools for some years, and I have oome to the con- clusion that as teachers we have failed in this particular subject. The teaching of latitude and longitude must also be oon- sidered a failure, for the average man cannot understand the moving of the clock backs rds and forwards and such things as flcasons in Africa. "YR HEN IAITH." At this place I hear almost as much or Yr Hen Iaith as a I: Pontardulais. At the Y.M.C.A. we get regular Welsh niglits, and I can assure you they aro quite a pleasure, fo-r the Welsh still hold pride of place hero for music. The other evening I had four young fellows looking t'oi me, who turned out to be boys I had in my class at Nelson (Caerphilly dis- trict) eome years ago. It is at times like that a teacher gets his reward, when meeting old scholars far away from home. I have been greatly enlightened in Indian matters by a missionary from Poona-Prof. Robertson—who acts as a kind of inspector of schools in this dis- trict. This week I have been struggling to count up to ten in Hindustani, having already picked up many words and phrases of the language, and being gener- ally able to make the natives understand what I require. The war cannot go on for ever, so naturally I am looking forward to the time when peace returns once more. thus euabling me to return to my family and Llandilo-Talybont). I fully expect that I eball be able to make geography lessons rather interesting after this experience."
SWANSEA LIGHTING.I
SWANSEA LIGHTING. No Increase in Price of Electricity. The Swansea Electricity Committee mot on Thursday, Colonel Sinclair prodding. The Borough Electrical Engineer re- ported that the cost of coal and other material has increased since the beginning ,f,f the wa.r by 84 per cent., and there had been an increase of 47 per cent in wages. The revenue from private lighting waa rc-duced last yaar to 221,704 from JE2d-,931 for the previo-us year, a decrease of « £ 3,227, duo to the operation of the SunuaürTime Act. In sp.:te of that decrease, Mr. Burr hoped that it would not be necessary to increase the price for electrical energy. The committee, however, must not look for big profits for the financial year ending March 31st. next. The Engineer further submitted a list of eleven Metropolitan and thirty-nine provincial authorities, all of which had increased their charges, some to 50 per cent. above pre-war rates. 'rhe Engineer announced that he had received ■pernuesion from the Ministry of Munitions to order'a 5,000 K.W. turbine and auxiliaries on a 1'4 basis, which will mean the hastening of the work. NO INCREASE IN PRICE. The Chairman said that the revenue was down partly because of the economy in lig'hting by both the town authority and the general public. The tact that the price was not to be raised was worthy of comment This was due to the fact that they had the large consumers of pow&r, such as tho local worb, and thí?ls.e had made it a profit where the committee maght have been faced with a very heavy It was quite dear from the figures before the committoo that they would hstve Jiad to raise their charges for lighting pur- poses quite a long time ago to meet cu: i rent expenses. It- was quite possible in the future that prices would have to be raised, but he was sanguino enough to hope that they would not. Ald. Dan Jones said that the fi_ gures j reflected considerable credit on Mr. Burr and the whole of his staff. (Hear, hear.) The report was adopted. LIEUT. HODGENS' SPLENDID WORK i A letter was read from Lieut. John Hodgens, the Commodore of the Swansea Naval Briade. asking that the commit- Me would meet the brigade in the matter of a bill for S10 7s. 2d. owing for electric lighting. Lieut. Hodgens said that he was carrying on the work of keeping over 200 boys from runnimr about the streets, and it was a gigantic task, especially when the financial support was in- sufficient. Councillor Hill proposed that in view of the excellent work Lieut. Hodgens has done for the boys that the Finance Com- mittee (to which the letter was referred) should be recommended to waive the claim. This was agreed to. i
