It echoed o'er the hills; Your King and Country need you, boys, Come from thj mines and mills. We know but very little How soldiers n ed to fight. And very little did we know We were the 38th." Your King and Oountry need you, The words got to our door; And off we went in tboueands, boya. We failed to wait no more We left our homes and comfort, Our future wa3 not bright; And then our captain said one dayt "We are the 38th.' We knew but next to nothing- Perhaps he gave a smile. When someone wrispered in the ranks, What is a single fiie?" But, thanks, he made us soldiers And showed us how to fight; We promised him the Huns some day Would know the SSIH." Po* months we trained in Homeland To meet our common foe; But one December orders came That we were all to go. Our hearts got their desire, Each man felt gay and bright, And proud that we were going with The gallant 38th." Our turn came in the trgaehes— The winter months were cold; In face of all the hardships, boya, We stuck it brave and bold. We kept our colours flying, We held them day and night- The King to-day is proud of The gallant 38th." The orders came one morning- That morning in July- To take the wood the Germans held; We said we would, or die. We charged across like madmen. We conquered left and right1- The Hune that day had come to know What were the 38th." Alas! it brought great terror Back to our hills and dales So many of our lads that day Had died for little Wales But while she had her mountains, Her dales and rivers bright. She'll always sing her praises to The gallant 38th."
SLIPPERY ROADS. I
SLIPPERY ROADS. I Traffic Held Up in Parts of II Pembrokeshire. An alarming accident occurred on Solva Hill on Wednesday Owing to the glasey state of the road the Great Western Rail- way raotor-bus skidded. The driver ap. plied the brakes, but without avail. The car, gaining speed, got out of control, and dashed into a bluff on the hillside, whence :.t rebounded and slid across to the other side, where it overturned. Fortunately none of the 12 passengers was injured. A little further down is the harbour w&U and a precipice. The mail car between Haverfordwest and St. David's met with an accident at Ffynon-ddegfel, Solva. The horse fell and the driver was thrown out, receiving in. juries to the back. Seldom have the roads in Pembrokeshire been fIIO dangerous as they were yester- day. During Tuesday evening it froze hard, and rain fell during the night, fol- lowed by further frost, with the result that the roads were one mass of ice. At the bottom of the hills motor cars, traps and carte were held up. A large number of cars failed to take the High-street, Haverfordwest. Among these were the motor mail carts from St. David'# and Fishguard. These mails had afterwards to be despatched by horse conveyance..

The question of the right to acquire these vessels was being contested, and the prices to be paid for them had not yet been agreed. The ships could not be re- placed for less than double their original cost.

FEWER TURKEYS.I
FEWER TURKEYS. I There are 68,000 fewer tnrikeys in j Ireland than there were last year," said an extensive dealer at Smithfield Market. The cause, he declared, was the wet season. The turkey is a very delicate bird to rear until it reaches a certain age ..Turkey supplies in London are pretty largely dependent upon Ireland just now. The Italian, Russian, and Serbian tur- keys, of which very considerable eupnlies were sent to he Loudon Christinas m. rv kets. have been stopped. A few Frepch are coming. There are moderate supplies of British. Yet wit^j all this shortage, the Snuth- fifid dealt-r was sanguine as to the supply b-emg tnal to the demand. The fact is," he said, we don't an- ticipate a big demand this year." The present wholeeale prioe of turkeys is from la. 4d. to Is. 6d. a pound. Last year at this tinao it was Is. to Is. 2d. A few French geese are now coming through to Smithfield. Ths wholesale price ie Is. Id. a pound. 1
