IOURSAILORS'ORPHAN&' I.OOR…
OUR SAILORS' ORPHAN& I OOR SAILORS' ORPHAIiS. The war is seriously affecting old- established institutions like the Royal Merchant Seamen's Orphanage by divert- ing supjj>rt into other channels just when it is most needed. Very many children of Royal Naval Reserve men have already been rendered fatherless, and the Board of Management have felt it incumbent upon them to come to the relief of these children by admitting I twentY-fivo at once without election or purchase. They earnestly hope that these eaorificMt of life in active eervice may induce the jrablic to assist them with subscriptions and donations to maintain these orphans, especially as nearly one hundred of thoee educated in the Orphan ago are at present fighting I for their country.

INFERIOR GUNNERS.
INFERIOR GUNNERS. SKEWEN ARTIUERYMAlrS OPINION OF THE GERMANS. I ) I EYE-WITHESS OF OUTRAGES. I Mr. Fred Hanford, an employe of the Skewen Co-operative Stores, who is a driver in the Royal Field Artillery, and was invalided home a few days since, I has some thrilling experiences to nar- rate. He had been at the front since about the middle of August, was among the first lot of reserves to he sent over. and had some nine days of the strategic retirement from Hons. Never will he forget, he says, the many terrible episodes connected with the bringing of the gnns to safety. Since then he took part' in the many battles, when the British again began to ad- vance—the Aisne, the Marne, Lille, Messinea, the Yser and Ypres. COlll- pared Viitli tho British gunners, lie says, tiio German gunners are far inferior, not being able to use the range and time- fuse with effect. TVvr gunnery com- man den;, who are excel]or)', cannot thus bring their plans to an eifective issue. I 11 Plantation 11 of Guns. The British gun-horses are always a mark for the German guns whenever the airmen can spot them. Yet he thinks that never before has the art of seeking and making cover for the guna been brought to such perfection. In a short time, he saw a beautiful plantation óf seemingly growing trees placed round the guns. In the present war, trees have been found to be about the best cover possible, being so deceptive to tho air- men, who are always on the watch. As to alleged German atrocities, he personally saw, in one house, an old man, with a white flowing beard, with his hand cut off, while a daughter had been cut open with a bayonet and slain. Other daughters had been shamefully mal- treated. I Allies Confident. These outrages, he believes to be the work of the enemy under the influence of drink. He is move convinced than ever that it is impossible to carry on such a war as this without adhering strictly to Lord Kitchener's rule of strict sobriety. Of the shells used in modern warfare, the shrapnel accounts for the majority of the casualties, and he personally was wounded by soir.e splinters, followed by frostbite, while he had the ill-fortune of having several horses shot under him. Great difficulty has been experienced,- during the progress of the war, in keeping the horses fit, as the ground is mostly cultivated, the earth consequently being extremely soft. At the front, he says there is not the shadow of doubt of the ultimate issue of the conflict. The Allies are gradually winning, and there is a splendid spirit in the fighting line. It was mally remarkable to find, he added, such a friendly and jovial feeling preva- lent amongst the men.
