ONLY TRADE UNIOINISTS FOR…
ONLY TRADE UNIOINISTS FOR THE MUNITION WORKERS ARMY ? It may be urged that the public have been assured that the enforcement of trade-union con- ditions has been departed from. We should like to know from those responsible whether all trade unionists acted in a com- pletely disinterested way when their services were utilised for the enlistment of the army of mechanics willing to serve any- where in any capacity. This enlistment has not been the success anticipated by those who ori ginated it. We need not repeat here that Mr Lloyd George accepted it as the only alternative to the enforcement of compulsory service by munition workers. Al- though the time for enlistment was greatly extended, the number who gave up their names fell short of 100,000, and many of these, it is known, were already employed indirectly in connection with war munitions. Is it the case that applicants for enlist- ments were rejected because they were not trade unionists ? Is it the case that at conferences trade-union leaders refused to accept the principle that the services of such voluntary enlis- ters should be utilised in recog- nised factories, although they were not trade unionists ? These are questions of the utmost im- portance in connection with the present state of affairs, and an answer would be interesting. The men wanted were mechanics thoroughly sKilled in the setting of machine-tools, in order that they might supervise, and render efficient, less skilled and female workers, employed in watching the operation of lathes in which the highly trained men had set the work. There are many such j skilled workers in small factories throughout the country. Such factories, often located in small villages, have, fortunately, not come under the domination of trade unionism. Many of the workers are their own masters, and, consequently, have no desire to become trade unionists. 'Chey are now willing to relinquish their profitable peace employment in order to place their skill at the service of the State. Has their patriotism been met by an ob- stacle set up by trade unionism ? Is such class domination to be permitted with the certainty of reducing the possible output of shells, while the employers are bound hand and foot in order that their factories shall be utilised for Goverment work without a profit equal to that which could easily be earned with corresponding effort in the production of peace material now greatly in demand?
AN ABERYSTWYTH FRIEND'S ADYICE.
AN ABERYSTWYTH FRIEND'S ADYICE. We are indebted to an Aberystwyth contributor for advice which shall surely not be lost upon us. Such evidence coming right upon statements made by our own neighbours is the endorsement of a friend and its earnestness is con- clusive. Mr T. Bird, of 3, Gogerddan Cottages, Penglais Road, near the Elysian Grove, Aberystwyth, says :—" I could hardly straighten myself after stooping some time ago owing to the sharp pains that took me in the back. I have no doubt my kidneys were affected by a cold I had caught. I was troubled like this for several months, off and on, and as I have a lot of bending to do at my wotk as a butcher I found the pains very trying. Reading about Doan's backache kid- ney pills I thought I would try them. I am glad I did, for I found relief from the first box, so continued with the pills until I was quite free of the trouble. I always keep a box of Doan's pills by me now, for I find an occasional dose a great help to me. I can recommend them with every confidence. (Signed) T. Bird." Lumbago is rheumatism of the muscles of the back and loins. YOUi" wake up in the mornings with a crippled pain in the back, and sharp pains dart through the loins when stooping or rising from a chair. Lumbago is caused by urid acid irritating and inflaming the muscles and nerves of the loins. Doan's backache kidney pills help the kidneys to throw off this poisonous acid through the urinary system. Price 2/9 a box, 6 boxes 13/9, of all dealers, or from Foster McClellan, Co., 8, Wells Street, Oxford Street, London. W. Don't ask for backache or kidney pills,—ask distinctly for Doan's backache kidney pills, the same as Mr Bird had.
