BY THE WAY.
BY THE WAY. Maesteg can ill afford to lose men who give their services to the town in which they live as ungrudgingly as did the late Mr. John Howells. Maesteg's loss is not lessened be- cause Mr. Howells had been debarred from public service for a considerable time. His knowledge and his advice wereahvays avail- able to those who sought them, and he was ever ready to give them. He was one of those whose wor k was more valuable to those he sought to serve because it was done unosten- tatiously and thoroughly. He understood the questions upon which he expressed opinions; he never spoke without his book. It is said that enthusiasm grows less with ad- vancing age, but in the case of the late Mr. John Howells this was proved to be false. He maintained his enthusiasm for public work —enthusiasm which was of some service to his fellows-to leave the town better than it was when he came into it, until illness put the brake on his endeavours. As a member of the Maesteg Council his services, although not always recognised by the electors, were of the most valua ble kind. His good counsel and his caution often had a beneficial effect on the deliberations of the local authority. For 12 years he served the town as a Councillor, and for the same period he had been a member of the Bridgend and Cowbridge Board of Guar- dians, among the members..of which keen re- gret at his loss will be felt. In religious work, too, he took an active part. He was a pro- minent Liberal. It was one of the bitterest disappointments to the friends of Mr. Howells that his name was omitted from the last list of J.P.'s for the division. No man in Maes- teg was, in their opinion, more worthy, but although promises were made—though he did not seek the honour—his name did not ap- pear on the list. It was felt that an injustice had been done, and at the time individuals came in for a certain amount of criticism. Mrs. Howell, the widow-with whom much sympathy is felt-is also an earnest worker on behalf of the poor, and her services as a mem- ber of the Board of Guardians have been of a kind to merit the warmest appreciation. • • The second spasm in the South Wales coal- field has passed, and apparently we have now got into calm waters again; but there can be no two opinions about a condition of things that makes it possible for the nation and the empire, and humanity itself to be placed in jeopardy at the word of coal owners and miners' leaders. The history of the last two crises will not be read with relish by Welsh- men of the future. It will be with mingled feelings that they read that when the nation was crying out for every ounce of energy, every bit of enthusiasm, to enable it to avert J disaster and defeat its enemies, the South Wales collier "downed tools" and left the country to its fate. These terms might be re- pudiated, but aren't they true ? The men vibo have gone from the wHiery districts, relying, upon their comrades at home to play the game by them, and their promise of support and thought, now find that while they are in the lighting line, their brothers at home can afford to strike, not only for better terms of pay- ment, but against national interests and the men wtio have gone from their ranks; against the women and children, the wives and child- ren of men in other spheres of labour.. The colliers in France and the Dardanelles do not condone the action of the men at hono >• those who deal with the industrial situation in their letters home condemn it as every man with patriotic feelings would do. We haue formed into line with Labour in times of peace, when they were out to make the owners disgorge some of their abnormal profits- —we are not unmindful of their offer months ago to work for the same money on the condi- tion that the owners did not increase the price of ooal; we are ready to admit that Mr. Runciman made a blunder in the award which gave rise to this latest trouble; but few there are outside the ranks of the colliers- who will support their argument that it is right and proper to strike when the lives of brothers and relatives, the safety of our women and children, the life of the nation, I are dependent on the loyalty of the collier as much as any other class, and a never-ceasing and continually increasing supply of coal. The fact that 30,000 colliers struck work on the day that their delegates arrived at a set- tlement is one of the most damaging facts- against the case the collier presents; and it is a pity that counsels to strike should have been given in the Garw. The collier may reply, We intended to show the Government that we meant business." But it was an attempt to coerce the Government into conceding their demands; but coercion we thought—and that belief is founded upon the utterances of men like Mr. James Winstone—was utterly op- posed to the principles of the men who advo- cate it for their own purpose, but denounce it when it is spoken of as a national necessity for the purpose of organising labour and se- curing recruits. Such a policy is surely not one to be advocated in time of war—war as we know it to-day. Again, it is somewhat strange that on this occasion—although it is admitted that a promise was made to include- them—that the South Wales collier should have threatened the country with a strike- and did strike—in order to secure something ofa dvantage to the enginemen, stokers, etc., for whom, if we remember rightly, they have- refused to take up cudgels in time of peace. 0 0 We have no sympathy with the coalowners in this business—they have not, and have never been, a class to excite symparthy; but these latest manifestations of their utter cal- lousness and indifference, their demonstra- tions of how to play the game of grab, should make every true Britisher desire to rid them of those undertakings on which the exis- tence of the nation depends. They have, from the time the South Wales Miners' Fede- ration first sought to improve the lot of the- miner, resolutely set their faces against any demands for better conditidns and better pay. Their position is admirably summed up by "The Suffragette," which says to the South Wales coalowners:—"Y ou will be among the first to be plundered by the Germans should they land here. Moreover, do y u re .lise that a growing number of p-ersors ire ques- tioning by what right, Divine or iiuiT/i, you enjoy the ownership of the mineral resources of the nation, above all, in war time? Da not, therefore, press the exercise of your' 'right' (wherever you got it from) too far! That way revolution lies, as you will see." To- ,the miners: "The Suffragette" says: "You are- not the only workers whose toil is hard and dangerous. From the miners the country- naturally looks to see the same spirit precisely as it shown by these others. And remember that if the Germans come the miners of South Wales will be among the first to suffer, as the- civilian people of Belgium have suffered."

Bernhard Schneider, a German prisoner of war, was buried at Dorchester Cemetery with full military honours. Deceased died at the prisoners' cf war camp on Saturday. The prison guard band headed the cortege, playing the Dead March, and the deceased was fol- lowed to the grave by between 50 and 60 of his comrades, many of whom carried wreaths. After the committal a firing party formed from the guard discharged the customary volleys over the grave and the buglers soun-
