IColwyn Bay & Colwyn Urban…
Colwyn Bay & Colwyn Urban District Council Election. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE COLWYN BAY WARD. LADIES AND GEXTLEMHN, My fourth term of office having expired, I beg to offer myself for re-election. My action during the ten years I have had the honour to represent you on the Council is well known to you all, and I trust you will give me credit for sincerely trying to promote the prosperity of our town and district. The attention of the new Council will be called immediately to matters of the greatest importance, The new Sewerage Scheme, rendered necessary by the rapid development of the whole district, will maintain the reputation of Colwyn Bay as being the healthiest sea-side resort in North Wales. I am opposed to the Railway Company's attempt to double their lines in our front without providing wider bridges and better approaches to our Promenade and shore. [ I feel that the heavy expenditure necessary to maintain our position as a lirst-class watering place, to provide better lighting, cleaner streets, faultless drainage, and the many aids to health, comfort, and popularity we still lack, demand that the Council should have other sources of revenue at their command than that of the rates. The Electric Lighting Scheme will, I trust, assist us to some extent in the better lighting of the main streets, and may reasonably be expected to produce a small profit but the whole of the lighting of the district should be in our hands, and the enormous profits of the Gas Company, instead of going into the pockets of a few shareholders, ought to go to relieve the growing burden of the rates. To allow any public necessity when a paying monopoly, and which can be secured by friendly arbitration, to remain in the hands of a few private individuals, when prudence, reason, convenience, and public interest demand that it should become the property of the people, it is a folly that no busipess community should tolerate, and ought not to be tolerated here. In my opinion, this is the best way to secure future improvements without overburdening the Ratepayers. Should you do me the honour of again electing me, I shall highly appreciate your support as a mark of approval of my past conduct on the Council, and shall continue to exert myself to keep down the burdens of the Ratepayers in every possible way consistent with the welfare and progress of the district. I have the honour to be, Ladies and Gentlemen, Your obedient Servant, GEORGE BEVAN. j March 2ist, 1900. 1136

iThe Colwyn Bay and Colwyn…
The Colwyn Bay and Colwyn Urban District Council Election, March 31st, 1900. LADIES ASP GENTLEMEN, I beg to offer myself as a Candidate for one of the vacancies now occurring on the District Council. I have been intimately acquainted with Colwyn Bay, since I resided here twenty years ago, and having had some experience in the management of public affairs, I trust my services may be of use in the various questions which are likely to come before the Board, and I therefore ask with confidence for your support on Saturday, March 31st. Our interests in the welfare and prosperity of Colwyn Bay are identical. Yours obediently, j J. E. BROOKS.
!TO THE RATEPAYERS OF |COLWYN…
TO THE RATEPAYERS OF COLWYN BAY. Re Urban District Council Election. | LADlES AND GENTLMEN, At the request of several prominent Ratepayers | of Colwyn Bay, I have consented to allow myself to be nominated as a Candidate for one of the vacant seats on the Urban District Council at the forthcoming election. As a resident of many years standing, a heavy ratepayer, and a property owner in the town, I should endeavour to the utmost of my ability to keep down the rates as low as possible, consistent with the steady advancement of the interests of the town as a first-rate and attractive Sea-side resort. I am in favour of providing a Refuse Destructor for Sanitary reasons, but would strenuously oppose its erection on the proposed Xantyglyn site-this would practically mean the destruction of one o the finest bits of scenery in the neighbourhood, so much appreciated and frequented by thousands of our visitors. All other necessary and urgent matters of improve- ment would receive my fullest and best consider- ation as a practical man of business. If elected, my chief aim would be To promote the welfare of the town and to safeguard the interests of the Ratepayers." Placing myself unreservedly in the hands of the Ratepayers, and awaiting their verdict. I am, Ladies and Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, EDWARD HENRY DAVIES. Colwyn Bay and Colwyn Urban…
Colwyn Bay and Colwyn Urban District. TO THE RATEPAYERS OF COLWYN BAY WARD. LADIES AND GENTLEMKN, I have been asked by a large and influential body of Ratepayers to represent them at the next Election. I have pleasure in offering myself as a candidate, and hope to receive the support of a large majority of the Electors. I shall make no rash promises, but should the Ratepayers elect me to represent them I shall not be wanting in the faithful discharge of my duties. There are several important public questions now before the Council—the Sewage Scheme, the Electric Lighting of the Town, &c.-which will receive my careful attention. There should also be great improvements in our Streets and Road- ways, which are very essential to this rising town. At the same time, I shall do my best to prevent lavish expenditure, and do all in my power to keep down the Rates (which are high enough) as far as is consistent with the welfare and prosperity of Colwyn Bay. I also think the Colwyn Bay district is uow large enough to be divided into Wards, so that proper representation would be given equally to each portion of the district. I have the honour to be, Ladies and Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, JOSEPH DICKEN. Station Road, Colwyn Bay. 1133

Colwyn Bay & Colwyn Urban…
Colwyn Bay & Colwyn Urban District Council Election. COLWYN BAY WARD. TO THE RATEPAYERS. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, The term for which I was elected as one of your Representatives on the District Council having expired, I beg to offer myself for re- election. 1. I have given a great deal of time and attention to the business of the Council, and my attendances at its meetings and com- mittees have far exceeded the average. I hope to be in a position in the future to devote even more time to the work. 2. It is my aim to serve the interests of the Ratepayers without fear or favour. I am strongly opposed to the practice of Councillors who are directors of public com- panies presiding over or taking part in meetings when matters are under discussion in which the interests of the Company are in conflict with the rights of the Ratepayers at large. 3. The Pier and Pavilion undertaking have my strenuous support wherever its claims are not in conflict with public rights, be- cause I believe that this project will be of great benefit to the town. 4. M fellow-councillors did me the honour to elect me Chairman of the Highway Com- mittee in succession to the late Mr. John Porter. The duty of seeing that our roads and footpaths are efficiently kept in repair, cleansed, and in some cases improved, is one of the utmost importance. 5. The Electric Light Extension Works are now being proceeded with, and other matters calling for early attention are—An improved Sewerage System and Isolation Hospital, a Cemetery for Colwyn Bay. and some improved means of dealing with the town refuse. The Council has an opportunity of acquiring an excellent site for these two last on the further side of Bryn Euryn, and this project will receive my warm support. 6. I fully recognise the great advantages to be gained by both the Extension of the Promenade to Old Colwyn and the joining of the West and New Promenades, and I hope to see these works (in both of which I have a personal interest) carried out, as soon as ever our financial position: warrants it. But at present I feel that the more important matters mentioned above will absorb all our resources. 7. There is no doubt that that part of Old Colwyn which is the parish of Llysfaen ought to be thrown into our District, so that pro- perty which now has the benelit of our im- provements may also contribute to our rates. 8. I am in favour of the District being further divided into Wards, and the number of Councillors increased, so that the outlying portions of the District and the eastern portion of the town itself may be more ade- quately represented than they are at present. 0. It will always be my aim to effect nil improvements in the most economical manner possible and to keep the rates down. I think the above, together with the Press re- cords of my three years' work on the Council, sufficiently indicate what my policy will be if you care to again do me the honour to elect me as one of your representatives. I am, yours faithfully, FRANCIS NUNN. Wynnatay Chambers, 21st March, 1900. 11-34

Colwyn Bay & Colwyn Urban…
Colwyn Bay & Colwyn Urban District Council. LADIES AXIl GENTLEMEN, Having been nominated as a candidate for the Urban District Council, I beg respectfully to solicit your votes at the approaching Election. I am an old resident and large ratepayer in the district, and considering that the whole of mY interests are centered in Colwyn Bay, it is but natural that I should take the deepest interest ill the welfare and prosperity of the town and neigh- bourhood. There are several very important matters which will have to be dealt with in the near future, and if I am returned I shall be prepared to support all movements likely to benefit the town and the neighbourhood, provided they can be carried out; with economy and efficiency. I am in favour of dividing the town into Wards, so as to get each end represented on the Council- I am also in favour of the Destructor, but would oppose to put it anywhere in tho town, as I don't believe in spoiling anyone's property, nor our town either, in having anything of that kind ill the midst of our place. Nature has given u9 many advantages over other places, and, if ",0 are going to be in the front of watering-placos, to draw both visitors and permanent residents lierf we must not spoil any of these advantages. It would be my interest as well as yours to keep the Rates low, and to see that the Rate- payers get their full value for their money in re¡¡,l improvements. I am conJident that a little money judiciously expended, will enable us to make the best use of ol", unsurpassed climate, and multiply very many times the number of our Winter Visitors. I have the honour to be, Ladies and Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, THOMAS ROBERTS- Peri House, Colwyn Bay, March 19th, 1900. 1137
