Bad News for Merthyr. Merthyr is faced with a gloomy outlook, for it is stated that Cwm Pit, which form one of the Cyfarthfa Collieries belonging to Messrs. Craw- shay Brothers (Limited), is to be closed at the end of the year, the coal having practically been worked out. Several hundred men will that be thrown out of employment. It is stated, however, that ere long a new shaft will be ready to work coal on the side of the hill at Abercanaid, which will more than compensate for the closing of the Cwm Pit, and give employment to many more men.

After the minutes had been read and confirmed the nomination for the officers of the Union and Executive Members for Wales were taken, with the following result:— Vice-president, Mr. Rhys Nicholas, Cwmavon treasurer, Mr. Hamilton Executive members, Miss Hannah Williams (Cardiff), Messrs. Jenknis moved the following resolu- tion That the Merthyr Tydfil Borough Teachers' Association respectfully asks the Secondary School Committee that one of the examiners at the County School entrance exam- ination be a primary school teacher, working outsido the borough." Mr. Jenkins urged that this request was only fair and just, seeing that most of the pupils were from the elementary schools and therefore any criticism that was passed would be much more effective if one of the examiners were an elementary school teacher. He would well know the difficulties to be contended with.—Mr. R. G. Price seconded and the motion was carried unanimously.—The meeting was afterwards addressed by the vice- president of the Union, on very important topics in connection with the N.U.T. affairs. Mr. Gilbert Evans (assistant overseer) appeared for the Overseers Mr. J. T. Vaughau for the defendants. Mr. Vaughan said the property upon which the rates were levied had been non-existent for very many years. Mr. Evans contended that- the property was a g1;g,ble, gardener s cottage, etc., in the occupation "f Mr. John Plews, barrister. Mr. Vaughan said ihnt was not the property rated. Mr. Plews paid the rates upon all the buildings connected with his residence. Mr. Plews gave evidence and said the appellants would not listen to him, for he had told them that there was no property upon which to levy the rates demanded. The case wa.s adjourned for five weeks, a.nd Mr. Plews said that in the meantime he would take the overseers over the ground, and with the aid of the ordnance map show that there was no property to rate.-J-At the police court, on Tues- day, Mr. Vaughan said that the Overseers had not visited the property, and he was in the same position as before. Hcybryne, incorporated accountant, Newport, presented a comprehen- sive and technical paper on Printers' costs," in which he dealt with the various stages from the receipt of an order to the completion and despatch of the work to the customer, and the relation of the cost accounts with the financial books. He pointed out the immense importance to all manufacturers and printers in particular, of paying more attention to the matter of their costs, as in consequence of the greater com- petition in trade, it was absolutely impossible to arrive at favourable results from a trading point of view, unless this was done. In fact if an analysis were made of the various bank- ruptcies and liquidations of manufacturers, it would be proved that the larger percentage were due to the lack of proper cost accounts. An mteresting discussion followed, in which there took part •—Messrs. John AHoock," W. O. Price A. C. Evans, R. A. Richards, M. Wilson Bartlett, fJ. H. Walker, and F. A. Fooks, on the various points raised.—Mr. Heybyrae having replied :o the many questions raised during the din- cussion, he was, on the preposition of the shairmac, accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
