A FAMILY BUTCHERED.
A FAMILY BUTCHERED. Most horrible murders have been committed not far from Toulouse. Henri Rouquet, a farm labourer of about 30 years of age, had been re- fused the hand of the daughter of the head man, named Serris, and had been dismissed. Last Sunday night (9th inst.), Rouquet succeeded in making his way unobserved into the bedroom occupied by Madame Serris, her daughter, and an aged farm labourer, named Caussinus. The daughter was the only person who, though frightfully wounded, escaped with her life. The murderer first attacked the young woman, using his knife, but she to some extent shielded herself. Her mother, waking up, was next attacked, and Caussinus, who tried to protect her, was at once killed with a stab in the heart. M. Serris, who slept in the kitchen, hearing the noise, rushed into the room, while his daughter, streaming with blood, fled to a neighbouring house. The struggle continued for a short time between Serris and his wife on the one side, and the murderer on the other. Rouquet seized a pitch- fork, and with one thrust struck M. Serris dead. To complete the massacre Rouquet used a bar of iron, with which he beat out the brains of Madame Serris. He then took to flight. Re- venge is supposed to be the only motive for the crime. Rouquet has been arrested, and, it is said, has made a full confession.

..t 1 THE PEMBROKESHIRE HUNT. iKin ————— 'fi PUPPY SHOW. Tire puppy show in connection with this now famous hunt was held at the Kennels, Lawrenny Castle, on Thursday afternoon (13th inst.), under the most auspicious cir- cumstances, the weather being delightfully fine. As, doubtless, many of oar readers are aware, the county—north and south divisions -is htinted from the Lawrenny Kennels by the gallant and respected master, Mr J. F. Lort Phillips, therefore the show of puppies, numbering fourteen and a half couples, was representative of the entire county. They were, without a single exception, a splendid lot iof animals, embodying some of the best pedigree strains in the kingdom. The gallant master entertained 100 gentlemen, farmers, &c., to a banquet, held in the great hall of Lawrenny Castle. The awards were as fol- low. In the bitch entry, Vanity," walked by Mr Griffiths, Creswell Mill, 1st; Warlock," 2nd, walked by MrProtheroe, Panteyn. In the dog entry, H Sinbad," walked by Mr George, Great Nash, won the first prize, and Brusher," walked by Mr Hay, Penycoed, second prize. The prizes were pieces of plate, useful and orna- mental, and were distributed by choice to those who had the priority of claim. During the after- noon, the band of the County Yeomanry Cavalry (of which regiment Mr Lort Phillips is a captain) played an excellent programme of music, under the direction of Mr T. W. Thomas.
THE MARTYRS OF THE WORLD.
THE MARTYRS OF THE WORLD. The dinner of "literary ladies" which- took place the other night was a bold departure. About twenty ladies met together, ate, drank, spoke, and smoked with every appearance of comfort and enjoyment. It had been hoped that the chair would betaken by Miss Olive Schreiner, who, however was absent. A letter was read from her expressing the greatest sympathy with the experiment. In her absence the chair was taken by Mrs Mona Caird. In regard to speaking the ladies showed themselves above the level of the ordinary after-dioner oratory. The lady who proposed the toast of the married ladies won herself a round of applause by the laconic phrase, To the health of the martyrs of the world, the married ladies." Mrs Caird responded in a brief speech. Poetry, fiction, journalism, and the dramll" followed, and both brances were responded for with ability. The final speech- one returning thanks for the toast which took the place of "The Ladies" on behalf of the spinsters. was particularly graceful. Altogether the ladies present might well regret that they had no male auditors to recognise at least their oratorical ability. Mrs Caird in replying to the thanks offered her for presiding, asked all her married sisters at least to join her in drinking the health of absent husbands.

The Hon. R. P. Bruce (Gladstonian member for West Fife) has resigned his seat in consequence of ill-health. FARM BUILDINGS, &c.-We beg to draw the at- tention of landed proprietors, clergy, agriculturists, &e., to the catalogue issued by Messrs Brnce and Still, of Liverpool. This firm is noted for their galvanized corrugated iron buildings, such as hay sheds, Dutch barns, stables, coach houses, huts, &c., and we should strongly advise any one contem- plating erecting such buildings to apply to this firm, who, being Government contractors, can safely be entrusted with the execution of all classes of work. The firm's full address is Messrs Bruce and Still, 75, Norfolk-street, Liverpool. DERBY HONOURS TO THE DUKE OF PORTLAND. -During the last hundred years (remarks the Globe) several owners have equalled the Duke of Portland's record of winning the Derby two years in succession. Sir F. Standish did so in 1795 and 1796, Lord Egremont in 1804*5, and the Duke of Grafton in 1809-10. Then came a long interval until 1852-3, Mr Bowes was successful, while in 1858-9 Sir Joseph Hawley was the fortunate owner. No one of these, however, so far as we know, achieved this distinction, at tbe onto" of -their turf career, as the Duke of Portland hag (tone.. DESCENDANTS OF DICKENS AND HUNT.—Most people now know that the youngest son of Charles Dickens sits in the Sydney Parliament, but it is not so generally known (so the Star thinks) that Mr Hunt, the bead of the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint, is a grandson of another famous literary character, Leigh Hunt. During the first quarter of the current year the Sydney Mint turned out 445,000 sovereigns and £ 2,1.50 worth of silver coin. Commenting on this fact, a Colonial journal remarks: All that its officers received for handling all this is iUf500, and yet we never hear of a Mint official being wanted' for embezzle- ment." PROSPECTS AT MILFORD. —Milford Docks are to the fore again now (according to the London Echo). The debenture stock has been run up in price, and rumours are being circulated about American lines of steamers being about to run from them. What does it mean 1 Has some- body got a heavy lot to unload, and is the market being rigged, so that it may be profitably dis- posed of I remember that there was a. similar flash in the pan some time ago, when it was said that the late Sir William Pearce was going to do great things for the undertaking. Unfortunately, the baronet died, and the docks were down on their luck. Are they really now likely to do much good? If what I hear be true, I very much doubt it. Have they direct access to the railway on a line of their own, or are they almost at the mercy of others who are more likely to be competitors than co-operators with them ? Further, is the approach and entrance to the dock in Satisfactory condition ? Intending in- vestors should satisfy themselves on these and similar points, or they may find that they have been tempted to make a doubtful purchase.

MR BALFOUR AND MR GLADSTONE'S CHARGES. The "Press Association" says:—Replying to a correspondent who had called attention to Mr. Gladstone's eulogy of Mr. Conybeare's character and to certain statements of the right hon. gentleman in reference to the working of the Crimes Act, Mr. A. J. Balfour, M. P., writ-s:- With regard to Mr. Conybeare's character, it is not a matter on which I have even thought it worth while to tonch, and on which Mr. Gladstone, if lie find3 the subject a congenial one, may deal to his heart's content without fear of contradiction by me." After referring to some other points, Mr. Balfour concludes, Extravagant and un- founded as are the statements of Mr. Gladstone to which you call my attention, they are not more extravagant or more unfounded than those with which we have so long been familiar both from the leaders andfollowers of the Separatist party."
THE LIVERPOOL POISONING CASE.
THE LIVERPOOL POISONING CASE. OFFERS OF MARRIAGE TO THE PRISONER. A correspondent writes to a London contem- porary:—"I hear that Mrs. Maybrick's solicitors have received seven communications containing offers of marriage in the event of the unfortunate woman being discharged. One oftbeoffers is said to have come from a clergyman. Madeline Smith, the heroine of the great Scottish poisoning case in 1858, accepted one of her many suitors, a clergy- man, I believe, and lives to this day a prosperous gentlewoman in the immediate neighbourhood of Bedford-square. Mrs. Adelaide Bartlett, who, a few yeus ago, was charged with poisoning her husband, received 25 offers of marriage. She had the matrimonial advantages of some thousand i f pounds and a most bewitching pair of eyes, but she preferred to end her life in a Belgian convent."

A CATECHISM FOR EVERYONE. WHAT ALL SAY MUST BE TRUE. Whett is GwilYln Evans' Quinine Bitters? A noted vegetable remedy, prepared in the most skilful ard scientific manner, and containing the active principles of those plants which are generally acknowledged to be the best remedial agents, and to possess the most healing and curative properties, viz., sarsaparilla, gentian, burdock, dandelion, lavender, and saffron. What is its actions? It assists and promotes digestion, strengthens the nerves and muscles, cleanses and purifies the blood, enlivens the spirits, and removes all obstructions and impurities in the human body. It gives a tone to the whole system. It strengthens and fortifies those parts which have been weakened by disease, and are consequently more liable to colds and unhealthful influences. On account of its noted medicinal virtues it has gained the highest recommendations as the Best Family Medicine, and a remedy for every kind of weakness and general debility. Is it recommended for these disorders by trustworthy persons? Yes. Mr. Gwilym Evans has received hundreds of testimonials attesting the virtues of his renowned Quinine Bitters, from doctors, analysts, chemists, captains of vessels, clergymen, ministers; public singers and speakers, tradesmen, and others in all classes of society, who have them. selves proved its beneficial effects, and have been benefitted by it in various diseases and ailments. Is it adapted to children's ailinents as well as adults ? Yes. It is so purely vegetable and free from injurious substances that even the weakest infants, the feeblest females, and most helpless invalids may use it with safety, and the working-man need not abstain from his labour whilst using this wondrous curative mixture. How can it be procured with the certainty that we obtain the genuine prepa?-atioit ? 1.—Ask in any chemist's shop for GWILYM EVANS'S QUININE BITTERS, and see that the name Gwilym Evans is on the stamp label, and bottle. 2.—As the smallest sized bottles of this preparation are sold for 23. 9d., if a smaller quantity, say sixpennyworth is offered you, you may feel confident it is a fraud, and that you are being imposed upon. 3. Do not be persuaded to take any other preparation, such as Extract of Quinine, Quinine Wine, or any other kind of bitters, under the excuse that it is quite as beneficial as the QUININE BITTERS, and much cheaper. This a purely false and misleading statement. Remember that only things which possess special merits to recommend them to public favour are deemed worthy of imitation, and the excellence and widespread fame of Gwilym Evans's Quinine Bitters have given rise to a host of worthless imitations, called by similar names, but not possessing the unfailing virtues of this excellent remedy. GWILYM EVANS'S QUININE BITTERS. 4.—It is also sold in larger sized bottles at 4s. 6d., and should iny difficulty be experionced in obtaining it, a bottle of either size will be sent carriage free by parcel post on receipt of postal order for the mount, direct from the proprietors, QUININE BITTERS MANUFACTURING CO. LIMITED, LLANELLY, SOUTH WALES.
