" THE NOVICE.
THE NOVICE. Two lawyers, one a veteran and the other a novice, were arguing a case before a judge renowned for his incorruptibility. The no- vice, however, was unaware of this. Taking the veteran, his opponent, aside before the caise commenced, he said:- Don't you think it would be a good move for me to send a box of cigars to the judge, with my card in it ?" ° The other flung up his hands in horror. Man, your case would be as good as lost" he exclaimed. "The judge would think you are bribing him." Oh, I think it'll be all right if I send the cigars," insisted the novice. The case was tried and decided by the judge in favour of the novice. The latter button-holed his veteran opponent as he was leaving the court. Well, I sent the cigars to the judge," he armounced, triumphantly. You did, did you ?" said the other. "I'm simply amazed that he decided in your favour." Oh, I put your card in the box," said the novice.
