TRADE REPORT.----I
TRADE REPORT. SCOTCH IRON. Glasgow, Friday.—There is now no doubt what- ever that trade is breaking down to some extent in the iron and steel industries of Scotland. The freih inquiry is small at the moment, and makers have begnn to press buyers for specifications, showing that the pressure which continued so long is at langth relaxing. There ha3 been a further very decided collapse in -wftrrftut^mthi* week. Scotch warrants have fallen .38, and Cum- berland hematite from 3s to 4s per ton. This morning the market was inclined to raliy a, little, but nniavonvable advices from Americs4 bad still a depressing effect. Bayers have not been inclined to operate, because the I impression has been strong that trade is giving way. At the same time a large quantity of iron has gone, out of store, the reduction for the week io tho Glasgow warraut stores being 7,700 tons. There has been a further drop in the prices of makers' pig iron. Govan Nos, land 3 are quoted 6G?, Carnbroe 76° and 75s, Clyde 86 6d and 76 6:1, Gartsherri:; and Calder 87s 6d and 77s GJ, Suiiimoriee 90s nnd 80s, Shotts 9Ls and 81s, Glen- garnock (at AtdroKsan) 83" and 76". SOUTH WALES FINANCE.
SOUTH WALES FINANCE. (Cardiff Account Days, June 14 & 28.) Friday, June 8th, 1900, A fair number of dealings have been reported in the local market to-day, but ehey have been for the most part on a small scale. Colliery Shares have claimed the greatest amount of attention, and it is a noteworthy fact that whilst the coal trade is as firm as ever, and the outlook for the future as good as at any time, to say nothing of the highly satisfactory character of dividends declared recently and likely ta be declared, and the known phenomenally prosperous charactsr of the business being done over the current year by most of the leading collieries, shares should be lower all round. It is quite clear that the falling off in prices is not lue to any loss in intrinsic value. The only explanation seems to be apathy on lilae one part engendered by the holidays Shroughout the present account which is aearly at an end, and to the attempts of weak speculators and timid holders to realise—the former nuder pressure and ihe latter through lack of courage to hold ;m. LONDON STOCK. HXCff ANGIS." I LONDON, Friday. ¡ The Bank of Bengal has reduced its rate oi discount from 5 to 4 per cent. Notwith- standing the payment to-day of the instal- ment of 10 per cent, on the National War Loan, money was in abundant supply, and advances over the night were very easily obtainable at 1% per cent., whilst loans for a week wtre freely lent at 2 per cent. The Discount Market was decidedly weaker, brokers freely discounting best three months' bills at 2% to 2-Jg- per cent. Berlin private discount advanced to 4% per cent. i On the Stock Exchange business con- tinued on an extremely small scale in view of the near approach of the settlement, which commences in Mining Shares on Monday next, and markets, after being flat, closed with a somewhat firmer tone, operators taking a rather more favourable view of the situation in China. British Funds, however, further declined, and Home Railway Stocks also gave way in sympathy in spite of the extremely favour- able Board of Trade returns for May. American descriptions were very little dealt in, but movements on balance were mostly in an upward direction on support from the other side. Canadian lines showed no feature, and Mexican Railways were quite neglected. Foreign Bonds im- proved in a few cases on French support. South Africans marked a fresh decline on renewed sales on both home and French account and the continued absence of news from Lord Roberts. Westralians, how- ever, were strongly supported, and Rio Tintos advanced on repurchases on French account, The market for Home Government Securities was again depressed, Consols marking a further decline of for money to 101 and 34 for account to 101%.
