--__-------_---__--THE BOOM…
THE BOOM IN WEST- RALIANS. During the past 12 or 18 months Westralians have been in somewhat the same passive condi- tion as Africans were prior to the great boom of 1895, but now there are many indications that the dealings in the Westralian market bid fair to eclipse even those in the African market of 1895. The cause of this is not difficult to find. In the first place, during the early part of this year holders of African snares, fully realising they had bought at too high a price, commenced to sell slowly bat surely, thus obtaining funds with which to invest in Westralian securities at bottom prices. Again, the development of the various mines in Western Australia, generally bat principally at Hannan's Coolgardie and the Murchison, has proceeded, if we may judge by the increased output of gold, in the most satisfactory manner. So far as the output of gold is con- cerned, the figures representing the production for the past two or three years are indeed of a surprising character. Here, we may state, that although the production of gold from Western Australia for the year 1895 was 231,512ozs., that for 1896 was no less than 281.265ozs., while for the nine months of 1897 ending September the output for this period only has reached the magnificent total of 451,019ozs., representing a value of £1,804,076, or nearly two millions ster- ling. These figures cannot only be pointed to as representing an increase of a sensational cha- racter in the annual production, but it must also be noted the yield per ton is increasing, for the Average yield per ton previous to 1897 was loz. lOdwts. 14grs., while the average yield for the nine months ending September, 1897, was loz. 12dwts. 21grs., or nearly loz. 13dwts., a result which even in the palmy days of South Africa was never even approached, still less gained. During the past 12 or 18 months matters in the Westralian market have been decidedly gaiet, the British public evincing little or no interest in the development of a gigantic auriferous area, which sooner or later was bound to come to the front; but although the public have been content to take matters easily, such has not been the case with English and Continental financial houses of high standing, who have been and are in close association witn the Westralian Gold Fields. During the past few months these houses have always been ready to secure large blocks of apparently unsaleable shares in Westralian mines, the developments of which warranted a fair return at a later period, and as it may justly be inferred these shares were only purchased with the view of re-selling them to the public at a higher price. English investors will probably begin to realise that if they wish to take a hand in the Westralian boom which has already commenced, and to share in the large profits, which must inevitably accrue, they should go in now and buy Westralian shares while they are cheap, and not wait till the boom is at its height, and the shares which they can can obtain now cheaply are five or six times the present price. Having dealt with the probable profitable future of Western Australia as a gold-producing country, we now proceed to give a little general advice. which, if followed, will probably enable ton investor to secure a proportionate share of the profits which should accrue to a purchaser of sound Westralian shares before interested parties put them to higher prices. Amongst shares of merit are those of the Mining Transport and General Finance Company, which are likely to see much higher prices than those we quoted to- day before the end of the next six months. The reasons which have induced this opinion are that the company is moderately capi- talised, has ample working capital, has floated several thoroughly good properties, and is presided over by gentlemen whose names are well known in the West Australian mining market. The company is. moreover, represented in West Australia. by consulting engineers of the highest standing (Messrs Bainbridge, Seymour and Co.). and the business policy adopted in the past has been that whatever might have been the views expressed about any particular property in Western Australia which it was thought desirable the company should purchase, the matter was never seriously considered till an exhaustive examination had been made by the company's resident officials at its own expense. That this policy has borne good fruit is clearly shown, in the first place, by the now celebrated Golden Horseshoe mine, which floated in the early part of 1895, with a capital of £ 80,000. represents a present value of exactly £ 700,000—that is to say, 100,000 shares at £ 7, 20,000 new shares having been issued in the meantime. Again, the Cham- pion Reef (Nannine, West Australia), in which the company is still one of the two largest share- holders, proves the advantages of the above policy. This mine, so far as present indications go, is hardly ever likely to approach in value the Golden Horseshoe, but when further stamps are erected— say 50, making 70 in all—it will turn out a good gold-producing mine—that is to say, so far as any one mine is concerned, for, with only 20 stamps running, the mine has produced for 1897 3,563oz. gold from 6,573 tons, representing an average profit of about 1700 per month, while it is fairly safe to say that when the enormous mass of tailings are treated by the cyanide process they may be found to yield a further 10 to 15dwts. of gold per ton. The Mining Transport Co. also owns about a two-third interest in a mining lease of 24 acres within 17 miles of Coolgardie railway station. This lease, which is termed the Golden Leases Co., with a capital of £120,000, of which XW,000 is working capital, has been steadily developed during the past two years. At the bottom of the shaft, which is now down 130ft., sufficient water has been struck (to drive a battery of 15 or 20 stamps, while the drive at the 114-ft. level, which is now in about 100ft., shows that the reef, which at the surface was about 2ft. wide, has, it is said, developed into an enormously rich body of stone, averaging about 8ft. in width and yielding, wherever tried, between 3 and 7oz. to the ton. It is the intention of the directors to at once erect a 20-stamp mill, and as soon as the necessary arrangements for this have been carried into effect there is good Teason to believe that the Golden Leases Company will quickly enter the ranks of the dividend payers. The Mining Transport Company is also a share- holder to the extent of about E35,000 in the Gloucester Gold Mining Co., Thames District, Auckland, N.Z., which was floated about June, 1896, with a capital of £ 120,000, of which SAO,000 was set apart for working capital. This company has proved the existence of no less than 10 lodes, varying in thickness from 6ins. to 3ft. The result obtained from one of these reefs was of such a satisfactory character that the directors hesitated to publish the news till such time as it had been confirmed by another crushing. They, therefore, cabled for a ton of the ore to be sent home for treatment. This is now on the way, and should reach London about tho end of this month, and after the result is known it will be published in due course. It is thought the result will be over lOOozs. to the ton. As the plant and battery are already on the ground, it is expected crushing will commence about the first week in November, and if only half the results of the assay above referred to are obtained the company should, the manager thinks, pay a dividend before Christmas. The company is also the owner of a substantial interest in the Victoria Reef, Mount Jackson, West Australian Gold Mine, which it assisted to float. This company has a battery of 10 stamps erected, and ao soon as satisfactory arrangements are made for an adequate supply of water, regular crush- ings will ensue, the company having a large amount of payable ore at grass. The Mining Transport Co. also holds nearly two-fifths of 300 shares of SW each in the Flax Combing Syndi- cate, Limited. This syndicate has been formed by the Mining Transport Co. to exploit an in- vention for the better and more economical combing of flax, a new process which bids fair to revolutionise the flax trade of the world. We 5 Understand the most prominent flax people in Belfast have backed their approval of the new process by taking in one line naif the shares in f the syndicate, and that negotiations are now t being carried only on with the view of selling the English patent for a large sum. In view of the foregoing properties and rights controlled by the Mining Transport Co., we think we have said sufficient to show that at existing quotations the shares are cheap. There is every reason to sup- pose they are likely to substantially improve, particularly as Australians are so active at the yresent time.-Mining World, October 23rd, 1891.

SOUTH WALES FINANCE. (Cardiff Account Day, Oct. 28th.) WEDNESDAY, Oct. 27th, 1897. Although business has been of a restricted character in the local market to-day the general tone has been distinctly better, and now that the settlement is practically arranged there is promise of a little more life being imparted to dealings. An extraordinary general meeting of the shareholders of Weaver and Co., Limited, was held at the registered office of the company, the Swansea Flour Mills, to-day (Wednesday), all the directors being present, viz., Mr Joseph Hall (chairman), Dr. T. D. Griffiths, Messrs James Jones, J. Aeron Thomas, Llewelyn Davies, and W. Weaver (managing director), H.Macdonnell (general manager and secretary), and T. M. White (assistant secretary). A large number of shareholders was also present. The meeting was held for the purpose of considering, and, if thought fit, passing a resolution reducing or altering the number or amount of shares or stock required to be held by each director of the company as a qualification for directorship. After a friendly discussion it was resolved unani- mously that further consideration of the matter be deferred until after the issue of fresh share capital, which, the chairman explained, was rendered necessary for the purpose of making provision for the in- tended outlay in the erection of the new Provender Mill and Silo Grain Warehouse at the Victoria Wharf, and for the further development of the business of the com- pany. A Disgusted Shareholder" writes to the Finamifd News of current date as follows in regard to the Rhymney Iron C, Company :— I have received the notice you mention in your valuable paper this morning from the Rhymney Iron Company. demanding (as I hold 2,400 shares) a very serious sum of money, without giving the slightest explanation or holding out any hopes of making up the loss. I feel this is the last straw— in fact, quite a cartload in itself-and I thoroughly agree with the opposition party that there ought to be some local working directors, as there are in the case of Ebbw Vale. I have no faith in such distant management. Our present directors are extremely picturesque and have high-sounding titles, but tney are evidently far too great per- sonages to interest themselves sufficiently in the management of our miserable property. I have met nobody who can say otherwise than that the business is dreadfully mismanaged.
-----LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Wednesday. Money has been in strong demand, and 2J4 to 2% per cent, was generally paid for advances over the night, whilst the Bank again did a good business in loans and discounts at the official rate. Business continued quiet in the discount market, but brokers did not care to discount best three months' bills below 3 per cent. The demand for gold in the open market for Germany was again strong. On the Stock Exchange fresh business was, if anything, even more restricted than yesterday, dealers being again chiefly en- gaged with the rearrangement of the account, which is progressing without difficulty, and markets were as a rule with- out particular feature, the tendency, how- ever, being somewhat more favourable, though prices showed some irregularity at the finish. The principal feature was a sharp advance in American Railroad Stocks in the morning in response to favourable advices from New York, which was, how- ever, later on mostly lost in the absence of support. Union Pacifies were in active request during the early hours on the state- ment by the Reorganisation Committee that the United States Government had accepted their bid for the full amount of the debt due and consequent expectation that the foreclosure sale will now proceed without further interference, but the price, after touching 25%, closed 134 below the best on realisations. Canadian Lines were flat and lower. Home Railway Stocks closed dull on the labour difficulties, though traffic returns were generally very good. International Foreign Stocks were better in response to favourable French advices. Kaffirs were again sold in the morning, but closed firmer on some French purchases, whilst news from the Transvaal was considered somewhat more favourable. The market for Home Government Securities was quiet. Consols declined i6 for money, to 111%, but are unchanged for account at 111%. The total operations since last Wednesday show an influx on the balance of £ 18,000. The Silver Market has shown increased firmness, chiefly due to the continued scarcity of spot supplies, and the price for Bars was fixed at 27d per ounce, show- ing a further advance of %d.
