LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Saturday. The position of the Mioney Market re- mains much the same. Supplies of capital are not over large. Loa.us have been in request, and are likely to re main in demand until after the completion of settlement, and steady rates may be expected to prevail. The charge for short loans has been per cent. In discounts the tone has remained firm mainly because of the prevalent financial uneasiness, but there are at the same time more bills about. Three and four months' Bank paper is quoted at 1% to 1% per cent. six months, 134. Trade bills Three months, 1 four months, 1% and six months, 1% per cent. The passage of the Lord Mayor's show through the City was, as usual, a consider- able hindrance to business. There was not much done on the Stock Exchange in fact, it has been a matter of difficulty to effect sales, as the markets have at times been in a state bordering on panic. The settlement, which commences on Monday for Mines, is looked forward to with anxiety. It is under- stood, however, that the troubles of two prominent firms which have been so much discussed of late have, in the case of one of firm, been already arranged whilst it is hoped that the support of the syndicate which came to the assistance of the other on the last occasion will again be forthcoming. In spite of the heavy depreciation which has taken place, no buyers aro forthcoming, and it is clear that any recovery is out of the question until after the settlement has been concluded. Whilst mines have been chiefly affected, all other stocks have been more or less in. fluenced. Consols fell & to and closed at 105% to 105 for delivery and account 2% per Cent. Guatemala fell 3%; Mexican, 1% to 2, and Uruguay 1. Home Railways were again weak, except in the case of North-Eastern, which rapidly jumped up 1 to 161 on the presence of a few buyers. This movement conclusively proves that the market is being over sold and the tide may be rapidly turned. The Scotch Stocks were again dull; Caledonian De- ferred fell to 47% and North British Deferred Xi, to 371/2. Amongst the heavies Great Western further declined to 158% and North-Western and Midland were each yA down Great Northern De- ferred fell and Hull and Barnsley, 34 bob Sheffield Deferred recovered Y\ Greab- Eastern feU to 81. Foreign Railways.—Fall—Buenos Ayres Great Southern Ordinary, 1; Central Argeutine Ordinary, 1 Mexican Central, 134 5 Nitrate Ordinary, The Mining Market has again been in a state of disorganisation, and during the earlier hours sales were impossible. The difficulties of two firms were discussed, but it is understood that the affairs of one have been already satisfactorily arranged whilst the other will, it is believed, be as liberally assisted as on the last occasion. The gene- ral opinion is that the bears are over- doing the matter, hence a sharp rally is by no means improbable at an early date. It is reported that some of the leading firms, taking advantage of the pre- sent disorganisation, are withdrawing money from Consols, which are considered high enough, and devoting the proceeds to the absorption of mines. In this respect atten- tion is being given to Chartered Shares, which undoubtedly have a future before them. Kaffirs closed very flat, but with some inclination to buy in the Street. Chartered Shares have buyers at 4%, show- ing a fall of 15-32 on the day. Goldfields were down, and most Land and Explora- tions fractionally declined. Diamonds were weak. De Beers fell ti, and Jagersfontein As regards Barnato issues the Banks were unaltered at lfg, but Consolidated Mines fell -h, to 2H London and Paris Corporation 34, to 1V2 and Johannesburg Consolidated Investment 5-32, to 3ii.
