SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE WEDNESDAY, Oct. 17th, 1394. It was, perhaps, only to be expected, as in the natural order of things, that the local market to-day would be an exceed- ingly dull one, the races at Ely always having the effect of bringing active busi- ness at the Docks to a speedy close for the day, and hurrying the representatives of finance and commerce up town en route for he course. While the markets during the presentweek have not been particularly brisk, the quietude observable to-day must be set down in great measure to the well-known fondness of docks men for a holiday on every available occasion. There has again been a good amount of dealing in Rhymney Iron New Shares, which have ranged between 12s 6d and 12s 10d, and at the close they are offered readily. In Rhondda and Swansea Bay Preference Shares there has been some business at 11% and 11H, while Barry Ordinary has been done at 230, Rhymney Ordinary at 202. The business done to-day by the brokers who are non-members of the local Stock Exchange is as follows:- Bute Debenture, 122%. Spes Bona, 9s 9d, 8s lOYd. Buffelsdoorn, 31s, 31s, 33s. Glen cairns, 42s. Oraoch, at Mayhill, Monmouth, and to develop and extend the same. The tirst directors—to be not less than two nor more than six—are Messrs C. Powell, T. G. Prosser, W. Roseveare, and G. T. Tippins. Qualification, £100. No remuneration is specified. Messrs Charles Massy and Co. report :— Banks.—There is not much of importance to report in this market, prices remaining about the -tame as of late, although at the close there is a little inquiry for National Bank of Wales at about Collieries,—Albions have been on offer during ihe week, with a few transactions reported at 11 —11 Yt- Penrikyber Ordinary and Preference are inquired for at about 5% and 8% respectively. rwo or three transactions have taken place in North's Ordina.ry at 2%, and in Ebbw vales all 8. A considerable amount of business has, however, been done in Rhymney Iron Shares, the New having been sold down to about 12s 9J, bat no justification has appeared so far for the selling. It seems, therefore, probable that a rise will again rapidly take placd. The Old have not participated in the fall to the same extent, probably owing to the fact that they are fully paid and that the New Shares are not. a fact brought strongly, and possibly somewhat unduly, into prominence during the last few days. Bails have been exceptionally quiet during the week. the price of Barry remaining at a fraction tver 230, laff about 82%, and Rhymneys about 203%, with very little business reported in any of them. In Rhondda and Swansea Bay Preference Shares a fair amount of business has been done at about last week's prices. Very little business has been transacted during the week in the- Preference Shares of the other railways. Miscellaneous generally have also been dull, although Dry Dock Shares are still asked for, and a little business has been done in Hancock's Ordinary and Preference. Flour shares have again been a. little bit weaker and are offered, exoepting Spillers' Preference, which are wanted by investors.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Wednesday. The Money Market is still quiet, but there is a firmer tendency asserting itself. Whilst on the one hand there is the prospect of gold coming fromNew York, more demand is experienced for the metal for the Con- tinent. --4_ MDME. ALBANI AND BRAHMS. Speaking to an interviewer the other day Mdme. Albani told au interesting story of her singing before Brahmb. A few months ago," she says, when on a professional visit to Vienna, it struck me that BraLms might like to hear me in his own composition. He is of a very retiring nature, and not over-fund of receiving strangers, but he expressed a desire to learn what I could make of his solo. So 1 "tmb to his home—such » simple one, and befitting the man in Vienna. A young English girl accompanied me and played for me on the piaiio. If I was nervous a. Worcester, imagine whe. I now felt I positively trembled as I advanced to the piano; but I think I sang my best. Brahms's face encouraged mo. And when it was all over he shook me by the hand, and betrayed his emotion as he thanked me again and again for interpreting his music as ho himself coalfl only hare wished. It is a grand piece that solo, ii rah nit. told me that in the first instance he composed the Requiem merely for a chorus. Then it was &"d to luck something. Just at that time his mother died, and it occurred to him to add a soprano solo. The voice is sup- posed to be the voice of that mother breathing peace and consolation to his wounded heart."

PUBLICITY AND FAILURE. A summary issued under the failure ot E. H. Cousens, lately trading as wool warehousemen as Gooch and Cousens and as E. H. Cousens and Co., wharfingers, shows liabilities £107,000 and assets JB185.
