ILLTREATING A WIFE. Charles Bouchier, a smart-looking yonng hus- band. engaged until recently in the 1 ram way Compa.ny's service at Newport, was before the Mayor and other magistrates at Newport Town- hall, on Wednesday, on a warrant for mal- treating his wife. The wife said she had been warned ft ve years, and had two children. Her husband struck her, kicked her, and blackened her eyes on Wednesday evening. She bad en. dured so much that she wished to be separated from her husband.—Alderman Huzzey (to pris- oiier) You hftve abused her most shamefully, and kicked her; don't you think it most cowardly conduct ?-Prisoner It is not a all on one side there are faults on the other.—The Mayor: Have[youanythingtosay ?—Prisoner No, I'll take my chance.—The Bench decided to award prisoner a week's imprisonment, and ordered a judicial separation, the prisoner to allow his wife 10s and that she is to have the custody of the children.—Prisoner wanted to know what was to become of his furniture; it belonged to him.—The Mayor told the wife that she was at liberty to sell it if she left the house, and to apply the proceeds to the 10s per week ordered for her maintenance. The wife Thank you.

I SOUTH W A LElS FINANCE WEDNESDAY, ACG. 16th, 1893. It "Oos without saving that the ill-rotijid depression continues, a,d trade at the docks in nearly all departments is in a duller and more spiritless state than it has been known for ye.ars. There was some talk in an informal Ray at this morning's meeting of the Chamber of Commerce of suspending the daily gatherings on 'Change altogether for a week or so, as there was pracfically nothing for the merchants and their clerks to do, and it was thought that the effect upon the outside commun ity of this realisation of the seriousness of the situation might do good. But the idjea was not definitely entertained, it beirig felt that those who had nothing in the way of business to do could keep away or take their holidays. At Penarth Dock, on Tuesday, the coal ship- ments amounted to only 720 tons, while at Barry Dock, on Monday, they were 5,592 I tons, and yesterday only 1,764 tons. The undermentioned dealings have been done by the brokers who are non-members of the Stock Exchange Rhondda and Swansea Bay Debentures (several lots) 8% Taff Vale Stock, 78y2. Decliaml.—Bp.rry Ordinary to 194- 197xd Rhymney Ordinary 1%, to 207- 211 Taff Vale Ordinary 1, to 77-79. Last week's traffic returns on the Taff Vale Railway were most unfavourable, as was only to have been expected. The total was 29,773, as compared with £15,463 for the corresponding period of 1892, the de- crease being therefore £ 5,690. On the passenger traffic there was a gain of £ 820, But on the mineral traffic a decline of £ 6,510. The aggregate for the past six weeks is £ 81,043, which, as compared with 988,255 for the same period of the preceding year, gives a total decrease of £ 7,207. On the Barry Railway the earnings for the past week amounted to 23,768, while for the 3ame week of the previous year they were E4,893, which shows a decline of 21,125. The aggregate for the past six weeks imounts to £33,383, while up to the same period of 1892 it was 234,803, so that the lecreafic up to date is £ 1,420. The Rhondda And Swansea Bay Railway Company's earn- ings for the past week were 2611, a decrease of 962 over the corresponding week. The iggregate for the past six weeks is £3,285, or an increase of £ 9.—The Cambrian Rail- way's traffic receipts last week were £ 7,447, or 289 in excess of those for the corre- sponding period. The aggregate from the commencement of the half-year is £36,610, or B704 in excess of the total up to the same period last year.—The Rhymney Railway Company's earnings last week were £3,784 16s 5d, as against £4,073 14s 3d, or a de- crease of E288 17s lOd. The directors of the Brecon and Merthyr Railway have issued their report and state- ment of accounts for the past half-year, the former being as follows :— Tim accounts, dulv audited, for the half-year ending 30th June, 1893, are submitted herewith for the consideration of the proprietors. The gross receipts arnounS to £ 36,563 agiiinst;037,307 in the corresponding period of 1892, boiug a decrease of £ 744, and the expenditure to £ 21.693 against £ 21,433, an increase of U255. The general depression of trade his made itself felt in nearly all sources of traffic, especially minerals, the restoration of the diverted coal traffic, alluded to in previous reports, having taken place too late m the half-year to appreciably affect the receipts. The amount available for distribu- tion, shown in No. 10 Account, is £ 16,112, which, after providing for all fixed charges, will suffice to pay the full interest of 4 per cent, per annum upon the "A" Debenture Stock, and at the rate of 3 per cent. per annum upon the B Debenture Stock, the latter being the pay- ment of arrears outstanding at the 31st Decem- ber, 1892. The bal.-mce carried forward to next lialf-vear is £ 437. With regard to the works called for by tiia Board of Trade, in pursuance of the provisions cf the Regulation of Railways Act, 1889, it was found that the sum of £ 3,250, referred to in the last report, was not sufficient; the Department has accordingly sanctioned an increased sum "f £ 3,636, which has been raised by the issue of L3,565 "A" Debenture Stock. The balance remaining to be expended upon these works is JB2 910. The usuaf certificates relating to permanent way and rolling stock are appended. Messrs Charles Massy and Co.'s weekly report is as follows :— The totally unexpected turn which affairs have taken in connection with the coal trade of this district has naturally seriously interfered with business. Transactwns in consequence have been reduced to a minimum, and while buyers are only willing to take shares at lower prices than those recently ruling, buyers, except in exceptional ca.ses and small lots, are holding aloof. Banking shares show verry little change, the only improvement being m National of Wales, which are now quoted 4-5. However unfor- tunate shareholders in this concern have bean, they are to he congratulated on the circumstance that their business has been taken over by the Metropolitan Bank, and that they will not suffer from the added risks attending banking during the present deadlock. The worst that can hap- pen is that the realisation of their assets may take rather longer but for those who can afford ..o wait there appears to be a very good chance of making money by purchasing" shares at the present depreciated quotation. In Collieries there has practically been no business. Mosl of the collieries have stopped working, but as it is felt that the stoppage is but temporary no great falls have taken place. Albions are offered at 11 North's Ordinary at 7 1 38H gd, Penrikybers at 4^, Ebbw ViWeø AT 5%, D. Davis and Sons at 11;, ex. div., Internationals t 2h, and Newport-Abercarn Ordinary at 6%. Barry Ordinary has been pressed for sale for $QUie days on the falling-off in traffic consequent on the strike. The stock is now offered at 195 ex div. The stock-splitting scheme which was the cause of the stock advancing to about 214 a iortnight since seems entirely forgotten, and the investing pub:ic with proverbial short-sightedness seem now only anxious to get quit of their holdings. Taff Stock, under the influences of the strike and the disastrous accident on Satur- day last, has fallen to 77—8 ex. div., one trans- action being recorded even as low as 78 cum. div. The traffic for the week is R9,773 against £ 15,463, showing a decrease of £ 5.690. The falling-off is, of course, a mineral traffic, and as the collieries are now pretty well all stopped, we may expect, unless the strike should terminate, a much greater decrease next week. Rhymney Stock has participated in the general decline, and is now quoted 205-210 ex. div. A mouth or two since (on rumours that an amalga- mation was on the tapis) the stock was run up to 250 and over now that these rumours are con- firmed by the chairman of each of the companies interested it is difficult to sell stock even at the low quotation ruling. We have very little doubt that in the course of two or three months the ,stock of the three companies referred to will be fetching very much higher prices than at present, and will be eagerly sought for by the same people who are now so anxious to sell. At present, however, buyers are very few and far between. Rhondda and Swansea Bay Shares have changed hands at 7%, and a fair imounfc of business has been doing in ;he debeiititrei at from JS8 to Lg premium. Che half yearly report shows a slight alling-off in receipts, but a. hopeful view was ,aken of the future. We consider that the act of along a sum of money from any reserve account C) pay such a pettifogging dividend as per Dent, per annum is doubtful wisdom. It would have been far better in our opint-on to have kept this special reserve fuud in hand.
j LONDON STOCK EXCHANGF, I
j LONDON STOCK EXCHANGF, I LONDON, Wednesday. The Money Market. is quieter, and there is a weak tendency. The American demand for gold is still unsatisfied, but it has been materially reduced, and, in consequence, the market is giving way. There is more competition for bills, and three months' Bank bills have been negotiated at 3% to 3 ys per cent. In loans only a moderate business was done, and, with fair supplies of money offering, short advances were offered at 2 per cent. The Paris Cheque Exchange is 25 33J4, and Berlin Cheque 46 Y4. The account has gone off quietly. It has proved to be a very light affair, and no serious troubles have been hinted at. The markets are being brought into a sounder condition, though there is still a good deal of uneasiness as regards American affairs. If matters in the United States mend, we may look for a marked improvement in Stock Exchange business here. Consols closed at 98 to 98 for delivery, and 981\ to 981\ for the account; 2% per Cent. CARDIFF. EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF. EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKrf, WEDNESDAY. The market is in a state of complete stagnation, and with each succeeding day the outlook is gloomier. Vessels are being diverted from South Wales ports, and before the week is out the-work done in the way of coal shipping at Cardiff wil! not be hardly worth mentioning. Patent fuel is very scarce, and high prices are asked as the de- pletion of stocks is going on. The pitwood trade is very flat, with no prospect of improvement until the colliers return to work. FAILURE OF A CARDIFF IRON- MONGER. A meeting of the creditors of John Williams, ironmonger, of 2c9, Bute-street, Cardiff, was held at the offices of the official receiver (Mr T. H. Stephens) un Wednesday. The statement of affairs I showed gross liabilities of B2,377 17, 4d, of which £ 2,069 10; ranks for divideud. Assets are esti- mated to realise £ 594 2s, leaving » deficiency of £ 1,475 8s. Debtor 'commenced business in Cardiff in 1882 with £ 1,000 in cash, £ 900 being his own money and B100 borruwed. He at various-.fciuies obtained further loans, and his present liabilities include B625 for borrowed money. Besides these cash creditors there are about 140 unsecured trade creditors. Debtor only kept books of credit sales and there was nothing to show his trading during the last ten years, he having at no time ascer- tained his position by taking stock. He stated that he only knew his insolvency a month before filing his position, and having no offer to make his creditors he was adjudicated bankrupt. He alleged that the causes of failure were keen competition in trade and bad debts, and that he filed his petition through pressure of creditors and an execution levied on his stock.—Mr C. Dovey, of Cardiff, was appointed trustee, and a com- mittee of inspection was selected.

In these day of pressure, even a careful study of hygienic laws does not aJtoget-Im- prevent rapid ex- haustion of brain and nevve power, in s more ov less degree. How much more, then, must overtaxed energy predominate amongst, that numerous class, who, fail-, ing to comply with the laws of health, neglect to avail themselves of the restoring an i repairing powers which modern medical science has brought into exist- ence, tind at last their system at a dangerously low ebb ? Time was when medicinal remedies were not so easily procurable as they are now, and those that could be obtained did not, in most c:*ses, bring about the desired restoration of health, most especially so in those baffling diseases arising from or due to a break- down of the nervous system, the result of mental or physical overstrain. There call be no question tkat of late years, owing to the struggle for existence which necessitates the body and brain being kept at high pressure, an alarm- ing incNaso has occurred in the number of people who suffer from what has been aptly described by one of the leading physicia,us of the da.y as the Disease of the Nincteenth Century," the varying symptoms of which are poor apretite, lowness of spirits, impaired digestion, nervous exhaustion, &c., and a general feel- ing of being" played oat." Various remedies have been prescribed from time to time to grapple with this insidious complaint which comes on so stealthily jwhilst some of these have met with varying success, none have been so uniformly I successful as those preparations of a vegetable tonic nature which contain Quinine in a greater or lesser degree. How to combine the various ingredients in a perfect manner, which should produce the maximum benelit has long been the study of the leading chemists of the day, and as it is well known that "practice makes perfect," the truth of this adage is once again verified in the discovery of the new process by which the HEALTH QUININE BIETTERS are prepared. The HEALTH QUININE BITTERS are the outcome of exhaustive experiments by one of our leading scientists to produce a QUININE BITTERS which should be absolutely perfect, and also free from sediment. This has beet) accomplished, and the proprietors of the HEALTH QUININE BITTERS affirm, without hesitation, that their BITTERS are the best now be lor a the public. Every person, therefore, who feels exhausted by overwork, whether mental or bodily, or suffers from poor appetite or imperfect digestion, or requires a pick-me-up that will brace up or renew the flagging vital energies, should immediately commence to taku the HEALTH QUININE BITTERS, and they wnl soon feel a marvellous improvement, and in a short time be completely restored to health.
