SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE FRIDAY, March 24th, 1893. There has been a freer market to-day than yesterday, but, as is usually the case just before holiday seasons, things are keeping on the whole quiet and unchanged. There is some increase of activity in the matter of collieries and coal exports, but this is in no sense an indication of better things to come. The firmer tone is regarded as purely temporary, while most of the evidences that go to show the general move- ment of the trade point to the current half- year being an exceedingly dull one. With the prospect of a restricted demand there must necessarily be a decline in prices, »nd these are things which ere long must begin to tell upon the local railways. A further fall in Tatf Vale Stock seems inevitable, though business to-day has taken plpce at 80 There has been a fair amount done in Barry Ordinary at 189% and 190, but the market is becoming weaker. The prospect of further troubles in the matter of labour at the Bute Docks cannot be expected to improve the position of affairs generally, but, as we have already pointed out, it, seems to be accepted that should there come another big upset of the relations between capital and labour, it will not tind the capitalists so unprepared as they have been in the past. The following business has been transacted during the day 0 Barry econd Preference Stock at 144. Brecon B Debenture Stock at 69%. Barry Allotments at 30s premium. Barry Fractions at 2s, 2s, 2s. It reads as follows :— Thf d:rc-"tors s-ibtr.t herewith thftfcceunts of the company for the ItaU-ytar endirig 31st Decern- ber. 1S92. From the returns made by the New- port (Alexandra) Duck Company, Lim.ted, the net earning for the half-year eiiding 31st Decem- ber. 1892, amount to £34,823 12, but of this sum, after providing for rents and debenture interest, the directors recommend tho declaration of the maximum dividend at the rate of 4% per cent. per annum on Consolidated Stock A, "First Pre- terence4eci on Consolidated Stock E, Second Preference, leaving a balance standing to be carried over amounting to L8:861 6s 5d. The lock of the new South Dock will, it is confidently expected, be completed and ready for the admis- sion of vessels in the course of the ensuing month. The two additional coal hoist?, in the course of erection by Messrs Armstrong, Mitchell and Co., Limited, together with their appliance?, approach completion, and will, it is expected, be ready lo commence work on or about the 1st May, 1893. Tne connection between the two docke is ii..w fully completed. The directors who retire upon this nccalon are Mr G. W. Elliot, M.P., and \[r | E. M. Underdown, Q.C., who, being eligible, /1 offer themselves for re-election. Messrs Turquand, Youngs'and Co., auditor?, also retire at this meeting, and being e'igible, offer themselves for re-election. The capital expenditure during the past half-year amounted to 924,134 14s 3d, of which £ 24.117 was upon the South Dock. The estimate of further expenditure on capital account for the half-year ending 30th June next is E16,419 of this sum £2,900 being for fresh water service. West Quay Road, traffic (,ffice, &c., and 213.,519 for the South Dock and Ebbw imp-ovement. The total estimate for subsequent half-years is £ 191,613, ard the capital powers and other assets available to meet further expenditure reach a total of £ 224,964 6s 4d. NATIONAL BANK OF WALES. TO THE FINANCIAL EDITOR. Szit,- I quite agree with "Hopuful" that the Metropolitan and Birmingham and South Wales Bank should not get it all their own way and buy the abtwe concern at tb,-i r own price more than they did in buying the South Wales Union Bank. Doubtless a great number of the shareholders, and probably some of the directors, are also shareholders in both banks. I do not qnitu understand what" Hopeful" means by all shareholders buying five more shares and insist on having tho numbers on their con- tracts.—I am, &c., CONFIDENCE. Messrs H. J. Pillinger and Co. report :— During the past week prices have been fairly we]! rra'ntained, but business is certainly quiet. In Bank Scares interest bas asrain been centred in National Bank of Wales. Various estimates have bt-ttii mentioned as to tho:, value whic1. will be returned on the amalgamation, and the majority, we think, will oppose any snialgama- fcion unless a retnrn of about -015 per share is made, probably on account of tha fact of the bank themselves issuing some shares tit Bo pre- m;uin at a recent date. There are also others j who, having bought upon the strength of the last report, will look at the matter in the -,trae light, Lloyd's Bank Shares have been in request, and bav« been dealt in a't 27%. The market in the:n is very firm, and better prices are looked for within the course of the next account. London Provincial Banks quieter. In collieries nothing special has taken place. Th<; companies of good standing, such as A'binns and Davies's. had been den1. in at big price?, North's have been dope at £ l 18s 9d, and, there is still a d eh J a ud. iBterriaiiouals are offered *t I £ 2 6s 3d. In the miscellaneous market Spiller and Bakers ve abating hands at 10% to 10%. PamaU j*nd Evans aie acquired for at thi* price. Dcy Dock Shares h ive had their fair share of r^jf»n- tion, notably Bute Dry Docks and Barry Graving JDock. Mordey and Carney's are certainly firmer, Newport Dry Dock Shares ai 13% can nnd buyers. In Western Valleys Water Shares there lias bt-en business at 10%. Newport; Tramway Shares a~e still weak, tITerp beinar sellers at 6| Searle and Herring's Debentures are now qniet at 101- 102; xeller,3 at. the higher price, Shares J quiet; nothing doing.
----LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE,…
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE, LoNeoN, Friday. The Money Market has been active. A good demand for loans has been experienced, And it is likely to qpntinue more or less until the end of the month. Balances are much less than they were, and the charge for advance is now 2 pgr cent. Discount business is steady, three months' Bank bills being negotiated at 1% per cent. The demand for gold has materially abated, and shipments from America are recommencing. The price of bars is 77s lid. The Paris Cheque Exchange is 25'15. Business is reflecting more and more the approach of the settlement and the succeeding holidays. The Stock Exchange Markets are in a state of stagnation. WAKEFIKLU, Friday.—Wheat trade remains slow, with price generally favouring buyers, owing to small supplies and better condition. English may be called rather steadier, with a small demand. SCOTCH IRON TRADE.
SCOTCH IRON TRADE. GLASGOW, Friday.—There is a rather better feeling in the Scotch iron trade. The speculative market for pig iron has been comparatively quiet, but there has been more business doincc both for home consumption and export. The shipments of pig iron coastwise to the west of England and Wales have been specially good, and the exports are improving in quantity. Warrants have fluc- tuated a little in price. Scotch is worth 40s lOd, Cleveland 34s 4d, and hematite 45s 6d cash. The output of ordinary iron has been increased about 500 tons per week. Prices of special brands unaltered. Connal's stocks of pig iron continue to decrease, but to a smaller extent than of late. Makers of finished iron are d,, iasotiiewliat better than last week. A number of fresh orders have been coining forward, among them being several good lots of marked bars fcr Japan. Prices of bars are unchanged. The sheet trade is steady, and prices are quoted on the basis of B7 7s 6d for single sheets. Several firms in the steel trade report rather more inquiry, and there are a number of fresh contracts in the market for ship- building material. Prices of steel are, however, very low. There is more animation 111 the tube trade, and one or two of the larger makers are quite busy.

Muck bars are brisker. Spicgeleisen is in slow sale, and prices are barely maintained. Bar-iron is in moderate request. Sheet iron is in fair demand at steady quotations. Old materials are in fair inquiry, and firm. Tin-plates meet with a moderate s.,tlL-. Steel rails and blooms are quiet and unohangtd. ------A FRUITERER'S FAILURE.
A FRUITERER'S FAILURE. At the, offioes of Mr T. H. Stephens, official receiver, Qu-eii-street, Cardiff, yesterday, the first meeting was held of the creditors of Job Bodman «Iundy, residing at Tonypandy, and carrying on business as a fruiterer at Hope-street, Cardiff. The amount of tho debtor's deficiency is 21.761 5s 8d, his unsecured creditors represent Z2,408, and the net assets available for distribution total J6646 15s 7d. He attributes his falure lo losses on London irtiit during the 1892 season, losses on oranges durtng the recent frost, II and bad debts. The debtor has 1 een adjudicated a bankrupt, and in order to save expense the official receiver has sold the horses, carts, and perishable stock. The official receiver has been informed by the bankrupt that ho commenced business about 17 years ago, and traded success- fully down to about 18 months sinoe, wht'u ha opened the premises in Hope street, Cardiff, since which date he states he has lost all his capital, which he esti- mates to have amounted to £ 700 three years ago. In accounting for his deficiency lie has estimated all the figures, as he has kept 110 books of account otlu-r than A debtors' ledger arid his bank pass- book, and he never ascertained his position. Mr C. E. DlIvey (Messrs Clarke and Dovey) was appointed trustee. In ha deficiency account the bankrupt specifier among othsr losses, JBSO lost on fruit from Hamburg, confiscated by the sanitary authorities at the time of the cholera epidemic.—Creditors present complained that the debtor, who had previously paid in cash. had contracted liabilities amounting to over £1500 since the beginning of the ptvsent jv;ar.
SHEBEENING IN CARDIFF.
SHEBEENING IN CARDIFF. At Cardiff Police-court, yesterday. Catherine Collins, who appeared with her head bandaged, was charged with illicitly selling beer at No. 1 Stanley-street. Defendant's statement in expla- nation was an extraordinary one. She declared that at midnight a number of men broke into the house, illtreated her and her sou. and put them both into the street. Afterwards they brought in a "4% and were drinking its contents when the police came in. It was admitted by the police that tnil woman came to the Central station and made a statement similar to the plea which she now set up. The bench gave her the benefit of the doubt and dismissed the case. James Garey was similarly summoned, the locale of the alleged offence being 12, Mary Ann- street, and the date, March 19. Defendant admitted being in the house when the police came, but denied that he acted in any other capacity than that of customer. He was filled £10 and coats, or, in default of payment, one month's hard labour. Margaret Dyer and Elizabeth Woodward were each fined 2s 6d and costs, for frequenting 12, Mary Ann-street.
