SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE TUESDAY, November 18. Simultaneously with the rise in Tag stock, there is a fall in Barrys the former have been done to-day at 781"f, the latter at 213%. Taffs shares at 19. Other transactions reported are Rhymney Railway stock, 148'2 Provincial Tram- way Preference, 101; Bristol and West of Eng- 4 land Bank, -017 3,0; 9d Millers and Cory's Deben- tures, 106VJ and Hancock's Ordinary, 23. Representatives of the three parties to the amalgamation scheme met in London yesterday, final shape being then given to the notice of application to Parliament, which notice has to be advertised on the 20th inst. The notice will not, however, furnish any particulars as to the terms upon which amalgamation will take place these have not yet been arranged, and, as mentioned yesterday, much difficulty is experienced in reaching an arrangement. The relative position of the several undertakings is so very different that, even were everyone concerned desirous of reaching agreement, lengthy negotiation would be necessary much more difficult is the work when, as has been mani- fested, a not unimportant section on one side is antagonistic to the project. There has been an admission that Barry holds the key of the posi- tion, and therefore invitation has been issued to the proprietors of that undertaking to discon- tinue competition and unite their property with the Taff, Bute, and Rhymney in on,B concern. The prime movers being the Bute an d Taff, both Barry and Rhymney are so placed as to s';ate II their own terms, the former—as the r P-ore impor- tant, witnout whose assent no furtl ler progress can be made—occupying the comm rinding posi- tion. Yesterday (Monday) it wai; decided to issua the notices, and the Barry directors met to- day in Cardiff to consider the matter, the majority present assenting to the course decided upon in London. But in view :f differences of opinion known to exist at this meeting, and likely to be prevalent also among the shareholders, l;he issue of the notice must be taken to be nothing more than a formality—necessary at tho prestint date— than a formality—necessary at tho prestint date— which in no way evidences fuvfcheir progijess of the scheme. The question has been raised as to the position of the Glamorgan Canal, in the event cf amalga- mation being brought about, this canal being the I private property of Lord Bute, and it being one source of water supply to the Carl iiff Docks. That this question can be settled is certain, the I essential condition—namely, desire to» settle it— being in existence. Such difficulties as exist ara not to be looked for in this dii-octk: n. On thr I part of all, except the section previo nsly referred W. thero is a strong disposition to arrange matters and the bill, when framed., will, we are given to understand, be so drawn up that the I interests of freighters and all others in the district will bo safeguarded, and risk cf opposition will be mfiiimized. There ln been suuw talk ci irrent that the Barry Company will seek powers to "split" their stock, and also to run an indep< indent line into Cardiff. They have running pow ers over the Taff stock, and also to run an Indppf indent line into Cardiff. They have running pow ers over the Taff line from Cogan, and the rout' 3 indicated is a branch from the Tatf at Grange sown station into Cardiff near Great Western laj lway station, and thence to the docks. The LUjuthousc is compliment l'y (?) and critical, as follows :— My worthy and esteemed friand who has charge of the Local FinM ico" columns of the Ooutft Wah* Dau-y JVeics says rhat Barry Graving Dock Company has had a vei Y successful year. My friend appears to have a better eye for errors in making up than judgJ nent, and what con- stitutes a good year s v/oric fo; • a monopolist dry Jock at such a place as Barry The concern in question has managed to pa: j 10 per cent. Ten per cent, for a concern with JI Barry's dry dock- work in its own hands strike; i one as miserable work. Were I a director of 1 ;ho concern, I should interview the manager; r,nci wert1 I a share- holder, I should nia;ce the po or secretary's life a burden to him. Let me giv e i he directors a little piece of sound advice. A'; t he next meeting let them have a hst of establis firiti è;n t or working ex- penses put before them, and 'let them divide that by two, then tell their i narjiqer to work on that basi Verb. say.. The directors of Mes ji-s T V. Hancock and Co., Limited, brewers, Cardiff,, met to-day, and decided that the inter no d ividend should b at the rate of 15 per cen pei annum for the half- year ending Noven iber 30th. Mr Valentine Trayes, P., presid- ;>d at 'the meeting. The last half-yearly divider .d was at the rate of 17 per cent per annum b ut an i nterim dividend such as that now declared is not usually up to the full earnings of an n- jdertiuVdng, and it may be, too, that the director- having- regard to the high price of hups and bad. jy, liavo resolved to be careful in their distributic JUS. IVe are informed that the amount of trad 3 done has been larger than in any previous simil;' ,r period.

LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Tuesday. Money h; ,8 been hardly so strong as yesterday, but it cann of be said that it was offered with greater fr eedom. There has been the same cautiousru about all dealings, and neither advances nor discounts have been arranged with- out consi derabie circums]3ection. Money is any- thing br it plentiful. Loans at first commanded 7 per cen j., but late in the day 6%. and even 6 per cent. w 'as mentioned. Discount business remains firm, t iiree months' bank bills being negotiated at 6/^P' jr cent. Paris Cheque Exchange is 25"39. Co jfidence is notoriously a plant of slow grow +h, and it will certainly take, time before the effe <ts of Messrs Baring's difficulties are entirely smr jothed a way. There are other bills pressing, but 1 they can only be clashed as insignificant when PI; iced beside the gigantic entanglements now in co prse of being unravelled, though, had thf y or jcurred separately, they would undoubtedly h ave attracted a great deal of attention, aad c aused considerably more business than they hnve < lone. But, until all chances of further serious • .developments from these side issues are removed, it will be idle, to anticipate -that business will again run in Its ordinary channels. Is A s(,ai is more easily cheated than arranged, and unfortunately in this caise the scare has not bee n a phantom of imagination, but an un- 1'1, asantly solid, taligible fact. Meanwhile the gr tarantee fund is quietly growing, and it is to be h' jped will soon reach the expected total of 1 5 million pounds, but what is now accentuating lifficulties is an all round disposition to adopt precautionary measures.in view of possible even- tualities. Country bankers and others are strengthening their, position, but at the expense of the London market, as they are considerably curtailing their balances but, although this may temporarily increase the pressure, it will in time have a beneficial effect, and will assist in con- solidating the improved tone when it sets in force. yr, To-day's Stock Exchange business was of an irregular character. -Stane investment dealings are m process, being attracted by the heavy fall in prices, but there wad' an uncertainty about variations, and, whilst South American issues were again depressed, weakness was noticed in consols. The chances of a speedy revival of speculative dealings are very indistinct. Consols closed at 94 to 94% for delivery, and 94Vs to 94Vt for account; 2% per Cent., 91V2 to 92 Local Loans Stock, 100 to 101. In Foreign Government securities there has been less excitement. South American issues have remained an irregular featuiv. Uruguay 5 por Cent, have been sold down to 42* but have j once. recovered to 44. Argentine issues also have been irregular. Both sterling bonds and national and provincial Cedulas 54owedwe ness, a fall of 1 to 2 being again common. Santa Fe fell 2 to 5. Mexican were weak. Cordovas fell 5 to 7% Entre Rios, 2 to 4; Paraguay, 5 to 6. As regards international issues, Italian were steady, and there was a rise in Hungarian and Russian. Both Egyptian and Spanish were weakened fractionally by further realisations. Egyptian Unified declined and Spanish Gold premium at Buenos Ayres has risen to 194 per cent. The feature of the British Railway Market has been weakness in southern lines. Both Brighton A and South-Eastern A have been speculatively offered, and are about to 1 lower. Scotch Stocks have continued to be sold, both Caledonian and North British declining about Heavy lines were fairly steady, except for North-Eastern. Great Eastern Stock was weak and slightly easier. Traffic showed an increase of £2,074, and Lancashire and Yorkshire a decrease of £2,201. Not much was done in AmGrican Railways. Milwaukees and Atchiscns left off a shade better, and Denvers were steady. On the other hand Lake Shores were flat, and about 2 lower. Louis- ville and Nashville, after marking a rise of Y2, closed below yesterday. In Pacific issues there was no particular movement. Eries and Atlantics were weak. Canadian Railways were dull. Grand Trunks were flat at the last, Preferences falling to 1. Canadian Pacific shares at first rose Yz, but closed eventually half lower than yesterday. The traffic for the second week in November shows an increase of 26,000 dollars. The weakness in silver and disappointing traffic caused serious depression in Mexican (Vera Cruz) issues, which fell about 2% to 3%. The actual take was £14,000, or £2,600 less than last year. Amongst South American Rails, Central Uru- guay fell 4J4. Central Argentine rose 1%. There was a continuance of depression in the Nitrate group, without much change, Rails fell Y- Amongst Miscellaneous securities, Joint Stock Bank Shares were flat, many of the leading 'issues falling Suez Canal was rather better. Brewery issues were all more or less weak. Guinness Ordinary 3 lower. Hansard Publishing Union fell y2. Salt Unbn were weak, and Royal Mail fell 1. Bell's Asbestos and Eastman's were rather better. CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, TUESDAY. Trade at the Docks during the past four or five days has shown unmistakable signs of weakness, and, contrary to what would be naturally expected at this season of the year, a lull in all departments is now in evidence. To-day 'Change was weil attended, but in the coal trade more particularly there was a lack of that buoyancy which has characterised this staple industry for so long" a period. As yet, however, prices have not materially declined, but a growing feeling obtains amongst people capable cf forming an opinion that we are on the eve of a considerable reduc- tion. The house coal trade has not been affected to the same ex, but the volume of business recently done is not so great as owners of this class of coals could wish. Prices for best bitumi- nous qualities are fairly well maintained, but for inferior sorts quotations are not nearly so firm as they were a short time ago. Patent fuel has been and is now in moderate demand, and 13s 9d to 14s is at the time of writing the highest figures obtainable. The coke market is quiet, and prices have, if anything, a slight downward tendency. Pitwood, however, con- tinues in steady request, and, as stocks are decreasing, prices are hardening. In the iron ore trade very little is doing, and reports from the iron and steel works in the neighbourhood are not over encouraging, orders for steel rails being still exceptionally scarce. The current prices at the close ot tae marxst were as follows :—Steam coal, l?s 9d to 15s; No. 3 ithondda, 14s 9d tf) 15s; No. 2 Rhondda., 12s 6d; through and through, 10s small steam, 7s to 78 3d bitumi- nous small, 7s; pitwood, 17s to 17s 3d patent fuel, 13s 9d to 14s coke, 20s to 22s 6d, according to quality. In our local freight market chartering for steam was moderately active, and, with a fair supply of tonnage on oiler, the volume of business effected was well up to the average of the past few weeks. Outward rates for the Egyptian, Adriatic, Sicilian, Italian, and Black Sea ports maintained an upward tendency, a similar remark applying to Malta, Constantinople, and Gibraltar freights. West Indian and Spanish rates Wêre moderately steady. Baltic and Eastern quotations remain unaltered. The following comprise the latest operations :— Tenerixfe, 8f; 9d (C W Anderson). Bordeaux, O^fcs. (John Byng). Dartmouth, 5s 6d i Gemini). Havre, 6s (Pyrrha). Las PaJmas, 8s 6d (Crtstro) St Nazaire, 6fm. (liubio). Salerno, 9s, f.f.c. (Horace). St Servan, 6s 3d (Lady H&velock). Port Said, 8s 3d (Syra). Genoa, 8s 9d (Eustace). Valencia, 9s (Prutera). Alexandria, 8s, f.f.c. a.nd f.d. (Dartmore). Marseilles, (Tancarville). Oran, SMfcs. ("Etna). Girgenci, 9s 9d, fuel (Ryda! Holme). Civita Vccchia, 9s, f.f.c. (Plos). Gibraltar, 7s 3rl (Garry). Genoa, 8s 9d (Elpis). Bilbao, 5s 9d (Pretoria). Sail.—Outward freights for Rio Janeiro, the River Plate, and Brazils continue moderately firm, but there is less disposition 011 the part of merchants to charter tonnage for distant loading. There was a fitir inquiry for vessels of superior class to load for South American and West Coast st ports. Quotations for the East continue steady Coasting and Baltic quiet. Italian and Mediter- ranean 1 ates ijemain unchanged. The following fixtures were reported for South Wales loading -° Rio Janeiro, 20s, 80 delivery (Tuscar) Bahia, 14s 6d, 50 delivery Monto Video, 18-, option Buenos Ayres, 20s 6d Rio Janeiro, 20s 6d, fuel. Homeward—Rosario, 26s lOd and 26s 6d, two vessels. Ore.—Homeward rates from Salta Cabello, Povina, and Bilbao ruled moderately steady, with about an average demand for tonnage to load for Cardiff, Newport, and the adjacent ports in the Bristol Channel. From Benisaf, Carloforte, Garrucha, Ergasteria, and most of the Mediter- ranean ports there was a fair inquiry for handy boats to load for Antwerp, Amsterdam, Rotter- dam, and Terneuzen at about last figures. Carthagena, Huelva, and Pomaron freights for tho Continent and the east and west coasts of the United Kingdom have undergone no material alteration. Quota- tions from Bona, Marbella, Seriphos, and St. Nicholas for transatlantic employment also re- main unaltered. The following fixtures have been reported Bilbao to Terneuzen, 7s 3d, free address Bilbao to Rotterdam, 7s 3d, modified terms Bilbao to Tees, 6s 6d, net conditions, 1,200 steamer. According to the Barry Dock and Railway Company's official statement, the total quantity of coal shipped on Monday at Barry Dock was 17,274 tons 7 cwt. The number of vessels in the dock was 56, of which 27 were steamers and 29 sailing vessels.
NEWPORT DAILY EXCHANGE-
NEWPORT DAILY EXCHANGE- DOCK-STREET, TUESDAY. The steam coal market was dull, with a slight tendency to lower prices. House coal, on the contrary, was firm, more tonnage having come to hand and causing a depletion of the stock in hand. Patent fuel, diamond brand, 14s at the works. Iron ore quiet, buyers still holding off for better terms. The charterings reported include the following Newport to Bilbao, 5s 9d (Pretoria). Newport to Salerno, 9s (Horace). Newport to Rosario, 26s 6d (Equator). Newport to Rosario, 26s 10%d (Solveig). Santanaer to Briton Ferry, 6s. ° Newport to Cork, 5s 6d, 500 tons (Olivine)
