CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, WEDNESDAY. Business in all departments, continues in a fairly satisfactory condition, the slight weakness in the market for best steam coals being generally regarded as of a temporary nature, due in great .measure to the absence of suitable tonnage. The shouse coal-market was moderately active, and ,present prospects indicate a busy period in a couple of weeks to come. The pitwood market continued firm, and there was a good demand 'for patent fuel and coke at yesterday's-figures. Extreme quietness prevailed in our local freight market. to-day, and with steam tonnage offering •very sparsely, more particularly for the higher Mediterranean ports, only a very limited charter- ing business has been effected. Rates from this direction maintained an upward tendency. Spanish and Western Indian freights were quiet. Coasting quotations remain unaltered. Sail.—There was practically no alteration in the condition of the market. For the West Coast and Northern Brazilian ports there was a steady demand at last rates, and for the higher Plate ports and the West Indies rates underwent no quotable alteration. The following fixture has been reported Buenos Ayres, 20s, option Boca, 40 delivery, free expenses Del Riachuelo. 11 Ore. Homeward rates from Bilbao, Salta Cabello, Decido, and Povina ruled firm, with an average inquiry, particularly for Newport and the Bristol Channel. From Huelva, Pomaron, Betii- saf, Ergasteria., Porman, and Carthagena steam tonnage was in good request at last rates for the east and west coasts of the United Kingdom and continental ports. According to the Barry Dock and Railway Company's official statement, the total quantity of coal shipped on Tuesday at Barry Dock was 15,294 tons. The number of ships in the dock was 51, of which 21 were steamers and 30 sailing vessels.

I THE HAVEN OF HEALTH.I -,
THE HAVEN OF HEALTH. I Birmingham Saturday Night. "■ In our issuie of Saturday Night (March 1st, 1890) we pubhsned the thrilling story of how Thomas 1' Durrant was literally snatched back from the grave. A narrative like that, teeming with in- terest, and better still bearing truth's hall mark f on every line, reminds us once more that fact is u stranger than fiction. When Tom Durrant left 'r the hospital he was dyin, the doctors said they § had done their best for him and could do no more. J Of his illness, his terrible sufferings, we hav« | spoken before. Everything had failed and ther* seemed nothing for it but for a mother to bow her ||- head with tearful resignation over the sick bed, jf around which the shadows of the spirit-world 1 appeared to be rapidly stealing. We have spoken. I of the fierce battle which was waged with disease, j ending in a glorious victory for that truly wonder- i ful medicine known as Warner's SAFE Cure. 'j Our representative called upon Thomas Durrant, | 79, Camp-hill, Birmingham, the last week of j February, a full account of the interview f appearing in the following issue of Saturday Night. We left the young man very weak and I thin, but still able to get about with the aid of a stick. Owin^ to business and other reasons, we did not call again until Monday last, June 9, when late in „ the afternoon we were onceunore ushered into the ii cosy sitting-room of 79, Camp-hill, by Mrs Durrant. Here he is. Tom, you remember this gentle- man, don't you?" Thus spoke tne-mother as youi-ig Durrant entered the room. We shook hands, and during the preliminary greetings we took the op- portunity of closely scrutinising the invalid. Ha had altered greatly since last we had seen him. During our first interview (I ebruary)he had beeH wrapped up in shawls, a stick in walking across the room, ana seemed almost too weak to stand up straight. On Monday he walked inta the room as straight as a dart and without Si stick, also dispensing with the shawls he had worn at our last inc £ tin°\ i stand up straight. On Monday he walked into the room as straight as a dart and without Si stick, also dispensing with the shawls he had worn at our last inc £ tin°\ i J? 011 infiuiry as to how he was S > thanks. Yes, [ r i" ..j. to what I did when you w £ r4 here last, lhen, if you remember. I had not been J allowed to go out; but I passed that stage by i some time, and now get out for a walk in the bright, warm sunshine every day when the weatner will permit. T l si^ns of dl'°Psy have gone, and all tha* ft iVf t^ie Paralysis is a slight stiffness io the left leg and fingers. I have a splendid appetite, and can feel myself getting stronger every day. I am not only alive, for which alone I might well feel thankful, but I am alive and promising to live many more years yet. And all. this simply from one cause. I feel a lump rising in my throat as I think of it. I should have been lying in my grave months ago but for Warner's SAFE Cure." This, gentle reader, is a plain, simple, un- varnished narrative of how Thomas Durrant was "Brought back from the grave." The facts aI told here can be proved to the entire satisfaction of all who are suffering themselves, or who have any near and dear one suffering from perhaps thfl most fatal disease known to modern science# "There is no puff about this this is no newspape* .flam. Thomas Currant is known to each member of the staff of this paper. His recovery has been a subject of congratulation and, marvellous though the recovery has been, one and all of 111 can easily and gladly testify to the truth of thil narrative.

-._--SOUTH WALES FINANCE
SOUTH WALES FINANCE WEDNESDAY, Oct. 22. Taff Vale Railway shares were dealt in to-day at 16. The investigation committee, who have in hand the task of saving £ 50,000 to 2100, 000 of the working expenses of the Taff Vale Company, are proceeding in very leisurely fashion about their work. Nearly two months bave passed since their appointment, and, beyond a couple of preliminary conferences with the directors, nothing appears to have been done. Meanwhile, the interests of the shareholders suffer. Oppor- tunity to earn good dividend for the current half-year is being wasted; and it is a qtestion whether by injudicious reduc- tions of staff and omission to keep up the property to its present high condition of efficiency, a state of things is not being created which will in the long run prove expensive economy. It is not by reducing the staff-to the extent of about 120 men—at the repairing sheds that real economy is to be effected. The men who have been discharged were not wanted in time past if they are not wanted now, and they are wanted now if they were wanted before. It is no doubt a fact that the Taff property can be worked cheaply for a year or two if only absolutely neces- sary repairs are done, and everything that can be deferred is put off till some more convenient season. Whether this is a profitable process to the shareholders is quite another matter. Under improved administration, the line can be made to pay a high dividend and shareholders and public are looking to the committee to institute the requisite improvement. Other transactions to-day have been—Nell's Ordinary, at 2 premium North's Colliery shares, at 4^ Bland's, at 17s; South Wales Union Bank, at 11t6: and Parker's Burslem Brewery Preference, at 11%. S. The new local coal and iron company to which we referred a day or two ago has now been brought out. It is the Park Iron Mines and Collieries Company, and the capital, as previously mentioned, is £ 30,000. Only £ 25,000 is now offered for subscription, of which £ 10,000 is in 8 per cent. cumulative preference shares, and £ 15,003 in ordinary shares both classes of L5 each. Private subscription has already been made to the amount of £ 16.000 and as so small a proportion remains open to public subscription it is anticipated that there will be considerable over application. The properties were acquired when the price of iron ore was much lower than at present, and this leads to the presumption that they are now worth far more than the amount at. which their value has been estimated. Messrs T. Smith and Sons, mining engineers, Cinderford, have reported most favourably upon the iron ore, stating that it has proved to be oi uniform and exceptionally good quality, and commands the highest price of any ore in the Forest of Dean. They estimate that a net annual income of E6,500 per annum can be gained. The collieries are reported upon in favourable terms by Mr Joseph .Hale; and Mr G, P. Simpson, of London, dealing with both the iron and coal mines, declares them to be good and valuable properties," which he has confi- dence in recommending as a good investment." There have to-day been several bids for shares in anticipation, 10s premium being offered. The list opens to-morrow (Thursday). An advertisement elsewhere furnishes further par- ticulars. As indicative of the accessibility of Barry Dock and the advantages offered to shippers, we may note that yesterday the steamship Albany left Bristol (city) at 9.30 and arrived at Barry by 1 p.m., being able to dock upon the same tide. It is thus demonstrated that under ordinary condi- tions there is certainty of docking from Bristol on the same tide, a requirement only occasionally met at the Bute Docks. A few days ago, in reporting the decision of the Barry Company to issue LIOO,000 additional debenture stock, we stated the purposes to which the money will be devoted, namely, to the cost of constructing the new commercial dry dock (which itself will increase tliq earning power and add to the profits of the company) and to the expenditure upon the new tips and machinery. As an attempt has been made to create misconception in regard to the new capital, it is well to repeat the statement, and to point out that last week's meet- ing was a mere formality, except in so far as it nad to decide the terms upon which the stock should issue, namely, with the rate of 4 per cent. interest. Powers to raise this amount, with other capital, had been taken by parliamentary enact- ment, the shareholders having approved of the intention at the Whakrncliffe meeting. This de- benture stock is not yet to be issued, nor has the price or mode of issue- been determined. When subscription for the amount has been invited, it is safe te prophesy that the response will amply demonstrate public confidence in Barry, and at the same time expose the hollowness of objections that have been raised. The prophecy is the more safe because the directors have had au offer to ta1,e up the whole amount. Traffic returns are nob so good this week; but, ncerUwits*, ^Lv?.satiijfa.<ta™ of sK?vau«v ing trade, and are, therefore, good, ready for shareholders. Taff exhibits an increase of J3262 and as it now compares with a period of full Barry competition, it is evident that tho pros- pects of the line are brightening, in a most gratifying manner; the total increase in the 16 weeks of the half-year is over £ 27,000. Rhymney has an even more favourable record, exhibiting an increase of R541. Barry had a good day again yesterday, and has, the past two or three days, been exceeding an average of 5,000,000 tons per annum. I There are new sellers of Great Western Colliery Old B Shares Spillers and Bakers New Preference, at 3h premium Sonth Wales Colliery A Shares Royal Hotel Preference Bute Debentures; London and Provincial Bank Searle and Herrings, at 4% Hancock's c' Preference, also Ordinary Hill's Dry Dock, at 8 Penarth Ferry; Ely Valley Brewery Ordinary Pylo Blaina L10 Ordinary, at 20 Taff Stock Penrikyber, at 8Y Parker's Burslem Preference, at 11%. New buyers are enquiring for—D. Davis and Sons' Ordinary Searle and Herring's, at 4 Junction Dry Dock and International Coal. Shareholders in that promising concern, the Barry Gas and Waterworks Company, are now, if appearances go for anything, in a fairway to profit by their enterprise. At the luncheon which fol- lowed the ceremony of starting the pumping engines at Biglis yesterday, nothing but con- fidence was expressed in the prospects of the success of the undertaking. In the post prandial speeches this feeling of confidence was especially pronounced. It was admitted that in early days the company had had to encounter many difficulties, but these, thanks to the untiring labours of the- directors and the zeal and ability of the engineers and contractors, had all been happily overcome. In the words of Mr T. A. Thompson, the share- holders have now "a reasonable prospect of getting back a return for their money expended on works which the engineer (Mr J. A. B. Williams) had no hesitation in describing as admirably and economically constructed. Rhymney Iron Company's "shop" is, we understand, likely to be taken over by the employes of the company, and managed upon the co-operative system. Particulars will be found in another column.
\ LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE. LONDON, Wednesday. Business in money remains quiet. The ten- dency is still regrettably weak, and already gold is being taken for the Continent. The chances of the position of the Bank of England being speedily strengthened are consequently less than they were, and we may have to deal with a 6 per cent. bank rate earlier than was thought probable. An instalment of 20 per cent. Indian 3 per cent. Loan of P,5,400,000 falls due on Friday, and pay- ment may cause the market to harden, whilst money will go into the Bank of England, and that institution will have a firmer control over matters outside. Short loans are quoted at 3 to 3 per cent. In Discounts not much was done, whilst competition was keener. Three months' bank bills were negotiated at 4%, to 4X per- cent. The Paris Cheque Exchange is 25 "29. Whilst fresh business on the Stock Exchange has been small, the tone has further improved. The favourable feature has been the increased steadiness of American Railways, and it is felt that if buoyancy can only be imparted to that market, the restoration of confidence will be greatly facilitated. It is generally understood that the assistance granted to some important operators at the last settlement will be con- tinued, should it be required. Consols were y\, better, closing at 94H to 94U for delivery, and 94M to 94^f for the account 2'M per Cent. (Childers'), 95^ to 96% 2^ per Cent. 91* 2 to 92%. Local Loans Stock, .100 to 101 Foreign Government Securities have been quiet, and mostly weak. Portuguese continue to recede on sales due to the political situation, but closed with more steadiness. Spanish were a weak market. Egyptian and Turkish were rather weak at first, but closed firm on better Paris prices. Italian, Hungarian, Russian, and Turkish were all dull. Central and South American Securities were inactive. Mexican and Venezuela were weak, arid Peruvian and Argentine Sterling Bonds were steadier. Gold Premium at Buenos Ayres is easier at 150 per cent. Though wanting in animation, the British Rail- way Market has generally been steady. Brighton A rallied about North British Stock was rather weak, the increase of £ 2,737 in traffic being disappointing. Caledonian was tolerably firm. Great Eastern was steady, and heavy lines occasionally marked a slight improvement as regards traffics. North Eastern and Great 'WpstenvTuiblished good returns, the former show-" ing an increase of £ 8,611, and the latter of 0,650 but results otherwise are not so bright as they might be. NEWPORT EXCHANGE.
NEWPORT EXCHANGE. NEWPORT, WEDNESDAY. There was a very fair attendance of members on Change to-day, but owing to the unsteadiness of some branches of the metal trades, more especially the pig-iron trade, buyers appeared to confine their operations simply to meet the neces- sities of the hour, evidently acting under the impression that crude iron will even still further level downwards. To many experienced men in the trade, the frequent recessions in pig- iron warrants, in the face of the huge strike of blast furnacemen in Scotland, and ,the damping down or blowing out of all but six furnaces in that industry, can only be accounted for by the fact that larger stocks are held by makers and others than has hitherto been in evidence. The finished iron and steel trades ls are reported to be in satisfactory activity, and ship plates are in active demand, the shipbuilding trade having apparently taken a new lease of life. Tin plates remain very firm in price, notwith- standing some recent attempts which have been made to "bear" this important staple. Both steam and house coal of the best qualities are firm in price, with a demand fully equal to the output. For the reasons previously adverted to, the trading operations on 'Change to-day were somewhat of a limited character. What business was absolutely effected was based on the following quotations, namely:— Coal.—Best Steam, 14s 3d to 14s 6d; seconds and other descriptions in proportion house coal, best, at Hs 6d; seconds and other descriptions in proportion; small dock screenings, 7s 6d smiths' coal, 10s.
