PEMBROKESHIRE AGRI- CULTURAL ARBITRATION. Mr Dudley Drummond, Carmarthen, has de- livered his award in an important Pembrokeshire agricultural arbitration. A claim for X170 was recently made by Mr J. T. Fisher, as trustee in bankruptcy of Mr G. W. Scale, in respect of alleged unexhausted improvements on Annikell Farm, formerly a part of the Picton Castle Estate, and sold last year. The claim nominally was against Mr A. Scale, who was the inter- mediate tenant of the Picton Castle Estate, and was contested by the purchasers of the farm, the Rev. Lewis Williams, Tierscross, Mr John Thomas, Tierson, and Mr Warren Williams, Rhosmarket. The main question at issue was as to the value that should be placed on certain fields alleged to have been laid down in temporary pasture. The valuers on behalf of the outgoing tenant contended that these fields should be valued on the basis of what they were worth to the incoming tenant in grass as against being ploughed up; whilst, on behalf of the purchasers, it was contended that the proper method of valuation should have reference to the actual cost incurred in laying out the fields for temporary pasture. Mr Dudley Drummond, who was appointed arbitrator by the Board of Agriculture, has given his award for JE29, so that, judging from the amount, the arbitrator has apparently ac- cepted the contention put forward on behalf of the purchasers. Mr Herbert J. E. Price, solicitor, acted on behalf of Mr Fisher, and Mr R. T. P. Williams, solicitor, on behalf of the Rev. Lewis Williams, the purchaser of the greater portion of the farm.

AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY ExctR- SIONS. August is the month when most people are thinking of an annual holiday, but to those who are compelled to refrain from making their arrangements for the present, the August Bank Holiday acts as a bridge. The subject of holidays calls to mind the wide difference between the excursion train of, say 50 years ago, with that of to-day. The old-time excursion train was a thing to be thought twice about before availing oneself of, but now in the 20th century, after a long period when improvements have followed fast upon one another and Railway Companies have used every device in consideration of the passengers' comfort, it has become one of luxury in every respect, and necessity. Among the Companies that have done most in this direction is the Great Western, aptly called "The Holiday Line." Their excursions, especially at holiday times, are universally admired. At August Bank Holiday, for instance, a large and varied pro- gramme is offered. Trips are run to all parts, and the fares are cheap, and those who have not yet decided where to spend the Bank Holiday are advised to send to the nearest Great Western Station or Oftice for particulars of the special arrangements. A most useful guide is published entitled Holiday Haunts "—600 pageB-giviug particulars of accommodation availing for visitors and containing numerous interesting illustrations.
