SWANSEA EXCHANGE.
SWANSEA EXCHANGE. SWANSEA, TUZSDAT. The state of trade as reported on 'Change to- day does not seem to show any great alteration in the prices. There is a slight recovery in pig iron over last week, and the market seems firm with,an upward tendency. There was a considerable reduction reported in copper, and the market seems to be in a very unsettled state, and much agitated by the falls and rises which have taken place during the week, and there are rumours of a collapse in the syndicate, which has been over- whelmed by the enormous stocks it hastocarryover. The exceptional condition of the coal trade is causing a great deal of anxiety to the manu- facturers. The price has already been advanced from 43 to 5.; per ton, and in steam coals the advance has been still greater, the result being an increased cost without a correspondingly increased price in the manufactured article. This refers more particularly to iron, steel, and tin plates, which consume the larger portion of coals iu their op-rations and it may be estimated that the extra cost, upon the advanced price of coal will make, say, from the pig to the finished plates, about Is per box, being equally divided between the pig, bar, and tin plates. To cover this the selling price of tin plates ought to be advanced Is per box, whereas we are informed that the prices uf tm pLtes hava remained statimary. VVhiia the manufacturers are adhering to the quotations, I the buyers are doing their utmost to bear the market, and brine prices down below the present UBremunerative figures at which they are quoted. ¡ Following the lead iu Staffordshire iron, I sheets are realizing higher figures, though snll inadequate to tho increase in the cost I (if manufacture arising from the advauce in coal. &3. Tue iron and steel trades are considered to be in a very unsettled state, as will be gathered from the attempts being made to resuscitate the steel rail syndicate, which was found from experience to have greatly benefited the trace. -----CARDIFF EXCHANGE.
CARDIFF EXCHANGE. BUTE DOCKS, TCKSDAT. Tbe steam coal trade at this port is still in a very flourishing condition, and, judging by the increased shipments, with no signs of abatement in the demand, there is every prospect of still further activity in the neat future. On 'change to-day there was a good attendance, and the inquiry for all descriptions of steam coal was uniformly good, last prices ruiine very firm with a slight upward tendency. The house coal market was also exceedingly active. Owners of this class of coals hava not experienced for many years such a prolonged bu-y period, and, as a matter of fact, many of them are barely able to keep pace with the growing demands of their customers. It is therefore not to be wondered at that the remune, ative prices recently obtained for this commodlcy, despite the unusual mildness of the season, are well maintained. Small coal, both steam and bituminous, was in brisk demand at late values. Patent fuel was also in good request at yesterday's quotations, whilst the enhanced prices obtained for Welsh cokes were again firmly quoted. In our local freight market to-day chartering for steam has been moderately brisk, and an average amount of business, more especially for the higher Mediterranean, has been effected. Rates for this direction rule a shade easier, but there was no material alteration in Gibraltar, Spanish, or Bay port freights. West Indian and Eastern rates were steady; Baltic quiet. Out- ward quotations for the States, and coasting freights, remain unchanged. The following comprise the latest operations :— Lisbon, 6s 9 i (Caerloonl Marseilles, ll$"c>< Teneriffe, 10s Ig ) (Radnor) Port Said, lls (South Wales) xiavre, 5s 1$(Tempo) Barcelona, 13s (Dundela) Malta, 9s 6d, option Con- stantinople, 10-" 6d (Fannie) Genoa, 11? (500 Nordpol) St. Nazaire, 5jfcs (Dowlais) Venice, 10s 102(3, clean terms of enarter (Cimo) Genoa, lis (Paraguay); Ancona, lis 6 i (smeaton Tower); London, 43 61 (Quickstep); Heunebont, 8* 31 j (Pheasant) Havana, 13s 61 (Laurestina) Port iJaid, 118 (Nyansa, and again at same rate for Sceptre) Barcelona. 131 6d, fuel (Veladre) Gibraltar, 7s 102r1 (Camargo). Sail,—There is little new movement to report either in outward or homeward freights. The demand for tonnage to load for the River Plate, Brazils, West Indies, and West Coast of America still continues, and for these employ- ments good paying rates may be obtained. Homeward business from the nitrate ports continues steady, whilst quotations from tbe wood ports for U.K. or Continent remain much about the same. The following fixture has been reported for South Wales loading Bahia Blacca, 36', 450 vessel. Ore.—Rates from Bilbao continue firm, with a steady demand for tonnage to load for Bristol 'I Channel ports. From Carthagena, Benisaf, and Huelva there is a steady inquiry, more especially for discharging on the Continent and the east and west coasts ot the United K ngdom. There is nothing new with regard to Eioa, Marbella, and Carloforte freights; but from the latter some employment is still offering for bpndy steamers to loau for Antwerp. The following fixture has been reported :-Benisaf to Rotterdam, 10s, 1,600 steamer.
