Colwyn Bay and District Ratepayers'…
Colwyn Bay and District Ratepayers' Association. A meeting of the above Association was held last night (Wednesday) in the Church Room when there was a fair attendance, which includ- ed Councillors Edward Allen and George Bevan. Mr. H. J. Marsden, president of the Association, occupied the chair, and in his opening remarks said that the Association was not antagonistic to the Council but rather desired to be of assis- tance to it. Still there were matters of public interest that ought to be duly considered. Mr. Johnston, the Secretary, stated that he had received apologies from many ladies and gentlemen who could not possibly be with them that evening, and his report dealing with seven meetings of the Committee was read, showing useful work done by the Association. A letter was read by the Secretary from the Tottenham Alliance of Ratepayers' Associations, dated the loth May, which dealt with the question of Councils and overdrafts at the bank. Mr. J. IN-. Adamson read a long correspond- ence between the Association and the Urban Council, and he stated that he considered it was neglect on the part of the Chairman of the Council in not replying earlier than he had done to the letter of the Association dated the nth March. The Association considered that the Council had given point blank refusals to call a meeting concerning the matter. It was an assumption on the part of the Chairman, Mr. David Gamble, that the Association were attempting to dictate to the Council. The Association's request was most respectful. He also complained of the action of the Council in confirming the decision of the Chairman. When a man was in a position of influence, it was a difficult thing to approach him, but if he was a poor man it was an easy thing to do. Mr. Edward Allen: Oh, no. (Murmurs.) Mr. Adamson said he would repeat what he had said. It seemed that there was a desire to over-ride an inquiry into public affairs. J Ap- plause). Mr. Thompson, Claughton-road, delivered an exhaustive speech dealing with the objects of the Association, the finances of the town, the position of affairs and the way to get relief of same. Mr. Edward Allen afterwards rose and ab- solutely resented with all the power he possessed the insinuations that Mr. Adamson made respecting the Chairman of the Council. Mr. Adamson was the last man he would expect such a statement from. He had known him to be fearless, and if he meant what he said re- garding Mr. Gamble, he was not the man he took him for. Mr. Adamson said it was quite unnecessary for him to say more than he had done; except: to state that actions spoke louder than words. Although he might lose the esteem of Mr. Allen by what he had said, he did not care a rap, and he had a perfect right to his opinion. Mr. Allen said it was simply disgraceful and must admit that it was not proper for the Council to treat the Association as it had done. The Chairman hoped no personal feeling would be shown in the matter. He was very sorry it had occurred, but at the same time he must armit that it was not proper for the Council to treat the Association as it had done. Owing to our having to go to press a full report of the meeting has to be held over until next week.
